Si \ntratta di mobili tecnici, funzionalisti e funzio-\nnali, inizialmente legati a necessità circoscrit-\nte, leggeri, asciutti e scattanti. Sono, infatti, le \npoltrone dei barbieri e dei dentisti che richie-\ndono la reclinabilità dello schienale, spesso \ncon un meccanismo a leva messo ben in vi-\nsta e non sempre di agevole utilizzo, almeno \nnei primi esemplari. Il comfort della posizione \nreclinata ispira i designer di arredo e gli archi-\ntetti a volerne progettare una versione gentile \ned esteticamente adatta a un contesto dome-\nstico. Di qui, ad esempio, nasce la Sitzmaschi-\nne di Josef Hoffmann nel 1905, con i suoi con-\ngegni meccanici in legno che ne consentono \nla trasformazione in posizioni adatte a posture \nsempre più comode (ma mai fino a divenire let-\nto), senza perdere in eleganza e compostezza.\n \nMolti gli autori che si confronteran-\nno con le poltrone che sono anche un po’ letti: \ncome non ricordare la P40 di Osvaldo Borsani \nper Tecno che negli anni del miracolo italiano, \nquelli del boom economico del Dopoguerra, \nidentifica la poltrona del manager contem-\nporaneo, perfetta nella sua tecnologia esibita \ndal dettaglio del congegno metallico che per-\nmette di regolare lo schienale, per offrire mo-\nmenti di riposo nelle lunghe giornate lavorati-\nve; e di farlo con una componente che sembra \nun gioiello griffato dedicato alla nuova classe \nimprenditrice.\n \nAnche Enzo Mari, nel 1968, progetta \nDay and Night per Driade, questa volta un di-\n \nIn early modernism, this need was \nto be found mid-nineteenth century in what \nthe great historian Sigfried Giedion defined \n“the furniture of the engineer” as opposed to \nthe embellished and bulky furniture of the up-\nholsterer. E, proprio per questo suo essere così \ndiretto e di immediata soluzione, Mari lo citerà \nspesso come uno dei suoi progetti preferiti.\n \nQuando Achille Castiglioni arriva nel \n1992 al disegno di Polet, realizzata da Inter-\nflex, è reduce da anni di grandi successi per-\nsonali: nel 1990 aveva creato Joy per Zanotta, \nun geniale complemento che moltiplica i piani \nd’appoggio dando la possibilità di espandersi e \nconcentrarsi, a seconda delle necessità, com-\npletando una ricerca già iniziata con Basello nel \n1987. Dello stesso 1992 sono anche Mate, Mini-\nmate e Supermate per DePadova, una famiglia \ndi vassoi che si trasformano in coffee table, uni \ne trini secondo la volontà dei loro utenti. \n \nSono tutti progetti che s’inseriscono \nin una ricerca decennale sul tema della trasfor-\nmazione dell’arredo, della sua compattabilità e \nmultifunzionalità, di cui il pezzo più noto è Ram-\npa, disegnato nel 1965 da Achille e Pier Giaco-\nmo e realizzato prima da Bernini e oggi da Ka-\nrakter.  Nato dall’ispirazione degli espositori dei \nfiorai nelle piazze milanesi, è un mobile a gra-\ndoni che diventa una libreria con ruote, e, gra-\nzie a una ribaltina sul retro, si trasforma in piano \nd’appoggio con scomparti e vani contenitori. \n \nCastiglioni, infatti, usava nel suo mo-\ndo di progettare un mix tra analisi, divertimen-\nto e affetto verso le cose e amava parlare del-\nla CPP, la Componente Principale del Progetto, \novvero quell’aspetto funzionale che prevale e \nguida un oggetto. All this is accompanied by \nthe innate ability of the master to identify icon-\nic designs, not with the trait of egocentric ec-\ncentricity but with common sense and econ-\nomy of action. And indeed, Polet is also a bit \nlike a throne, a Cinderella who from the kitch-\nen can end up at the Grand Ball, an adaptable \nand courteous friend. Infatti il papà diceva che era “a pro-\nva di Giovanna”!\nGiovanna Castiglioni \nLa Fondazione Achille Ca-\nstiglioni si occupa anche di rieditare pezzi di-\nsegnati da mio padre, quindi mio fratello Car-\nlo ed io, sempre supportati dal prezioso lavoro \narchivistico di Antonella Gornati e di tutto lo \nstaff, speravamo da un po’ di tempo di trovare \nla giusta occasione per riproporre Polet. Per \nnoi è un perfetto progetto della rinascita, per-\nché parla di trasformazione, ma anche di con-\ndivisione. Per questo ne abbiamo parlato con \nMatteo appena lui ci ha raccontato della sua \navventura con Twils.\nMatteo Ragni \nVolevamo infatti dare un \ngrande rilancio al brand in termini di sedute per \nla parte living, quando Giovanna mi ha parlato \ndi Polet, un progetto meno noto tra quelli del \ngrande maestro, ma con un potenziale che ci è \nGiovanna Castiglioni \nPolet was primarily the solu-\ntion to a problem we had in our seaside home \nin Liguria, where I wanted to invite a friend to \nstay for a weekend but with no guest bedroom \navailable. So, as often happened, my father got \nto work and presented us with this unusual yet \nperfectly functional armchair which could con-\nvert to a bed.\nGiovanna Castiglioni \nA lot; actually, we were the \n“guinea pigs” who tested its strength. I toss and \nturn in my sleep and can guarantee that Polet, \neven though it’s lightweight, has always sup-\nported me and been comfortable. Papa in fact \nsaid that it was “Giovanna-proof”!\nGiovanna Castiglioni \nThe Achille Castiglioni \nFoundation also re-edits pieces designed by \nmy father. My brother Carlo and I, always sup-\nported by the invaluable archival work of An-\ntonella Gornati and the entire staff, were there-\nfore hoping for some time now to find the right \noccasion to revive Polet. For us it is a perfect \nrevival design, because it speaks not only of \ntransformation but also of sharing. Una rie-\ndizione non è un esercizio di stile o \nun mero tributo storico; è un prodotto \nche ha ancora senso nel mondo at-\ntuale e che, magari grazie a picco-\nle, ma sostanziali implementazioni, \npuò rivivere e donare ancora molto \nal suo pubblico.\nVilma Carnieletto \nTwils has al-\nways been strongly design-orient-\ned; I therefore wholeheartedly agreed \nto the idea of reviving such a signifi-\ncant and important piece by the great \nAchille Castiglioni.\nGiovanna Castiglioni \nWe care about \nfinding a company that is suitable \nfor such a design. A new edition is \nnot an exercise in style or a mere his-\ntorical tribute; it is a product which \nstill makes sense in today’s world \nand which, maybe thanks to small \nyet substantial changes, can thrive \nagain and still give a great deal to \npeople.\nMatteo Ragni \nQuesto sembra un proget-\nto che viene dal futuro e non dagli anni 90! Tut-\nti, infatti, abbiamo sentito in questi mesi la ne-\ncessità di un oggetto multifunzionale. Oggi, con \nprospettive diverse, la lungimiranza di quel pro-\ngetto è tornata a rispondere ai nostri bisogni.\nCarlo Pancino \nVero, infatti è un progetto \na più funzioni, ne ha almeno quattro. Innanzi-\ntutto le prime due, la poltrona e il letto, sono un \nanello di congiunzione tra i due mondi di Twils, \nquello della zona notte e quello del Living. A \nqueste si aggiungono la funzione da lettura o \nhome-working e quella relax, come una vera \nlounge chair. A sottolineare la sua versatilità, \nsta il fatto che, benché non rientrasse nelle sue \napplicazioni originarie, la realizzeremo anche \nin versione outdoor. Infatti, si presta benissi-\nmo a vivere negli spazi aperti, così nelle belle \ngiornate potrà diventare anche una compagna \nper godersi il sole in terrazzo.\nCarlo Pancino \nAbbiamo aggiunto un mo-\nvimento allo schienale per donare la versione \n“lettura”. Per il resto tutto è stato rispettato nei \nminimi dettagli: dal meccanismo in ottone al \nmaterassino che è un prodotto altamente ar-\ntigianale, tutto realizzato a mano in Italia. \nOvviamente per la versione outdoor utilizzere-\nmo un’essenza adatta, il legno di iroko, con tap-\npezzerie conformi alla permanenza in esterno. \nVilma Carnieletto \n Polet esprime e riassume \ntutti i principali contenuti del nostro brand: è \nconfortevole e funzionale, disegnata con tratti \npuri e decisi. E, soprattutto, ha una componen-\nte tessile che si presta ad essere interpreta-\nta con eleganza e creatività, come nella tra-\ndizione Twils. \nCarlo Pancino \nIl fatto davvero straordina-\nrio, per noi, è pensare che negli anni ’90 Casti-\nglioni non solo ha realizzato un progetto ancora \noggi attuale, ma che, grazie a questa collabo-\nrazione con la Fondazione, oggi rivive e si ar-\nricchisce di funzioni contemporanee come na-\nturale sbocco della sua visione di allora.\nMatteo Ragni \nE per noi è bellissimo po-\nter condividere questo tesoro col pubblico di \nTwils.\nMatteo Ragni \nThis seems a design that \ncomes from the future and not from the 90s! \nOver the last few months all of us, in fact, have \nfelt the need for a multi-functional object. Even \nwith the different perspectives of today, the far-\nsightedness of that design once more answers \nour needs.\nCarlo Pancino \nTrue; in fact it is a design \nwith several functions, at least four. To begin \nwith, the first two – the armchair and the bed - \nare a link between the two worlds of Twils, the \nbedroom and the living areas. Added to these \nare the reading or homeworking and the re-\nlaxation functions, as with a true lounge chair. \nIts versatility is emphasised by the fact that, \nalthough not included in its original applica-\ntions, we will produce it in an outdoor version \nas well. It is well suited to being outdoors and \nso on sunny days can also become a compan-\nion for sunbathing on the terrace.\nCarlo Pancino \nWe have added one back-\nrest movement to provide the “reading” posi-\ntion.
