That’s because cultural \ncontents are more and more an expression of people’s choices.\nTATO’s proposal is a newly structured and poetic model where the \nvisual research goes together with the industrial experimentation, \nthe philology of materials and techniques, both new and old, \nthe discovery of new production geographies in order to build a \ncatalogue in which the content stimulus and the edition methods \nare more privileged than the manufacturing limitations and the \nassembly line repetitiveness.\nIt’s not just about good design:\nit’s about a more complex vision\nof the world, of things and of living,\nit’s about an attitude that brings\ntogether a network of knowledge including\nthe hand-made and machine-made and that is\nrelated with the more anthropological aspects\nof craftsmanship and industry.\nChoosing good authors is necessary to transfer the\nart phenomenology in the object and to make aesthetic\nand functional information be coincident. It’s important to practice \nan intense professional and affective relationship between client, \ndesigner and company that belongs to the culture of the project.\nSo the object becomes a part of a vast and very articulate \nnarrative program that, in pursuing a personal image, redefines \nthe relationship between industrial production and production of \nknowledge.\nIT’S NOT JUST ABOUT GOOD DESIGN\nTATO was conceived to do things well.\nThis is what it’s dealing with. There’s\na deep knowledge arising from\npractice. Doing things well for a\ncompany producing lighting\ndesign and furnishing items\nmeans to express a way to be\nand a precise attitude. It means\nto purposely design in an\nunderstated way a personal idea of what freedom\nis, a personal idea of new, of something you don’t look for, \nbecause you live with it every day.\nTATO’s idea of design translates into a new economic and \ncultural scenario and in a future-oriented tradition of manual \ndexterity, knowledge of gestures, materials and handicrafts. \nAll those elements that make Italy well known in the world. \nThere is no industry that can do well without handicrafts.\nThe constant manual work on the materials and the forms they \ncan take, the surprise and the intimate familiarity that derive from \nthem, gives us back a range of objects representing characters, \ntalking to us within an architecture, feeling always comfortable \nand behaving. These objects can keep their value over time.\nGood design begins with people. TATO surrounds itself with people \nwho are similar but also with very different. Not only architects and \ndesigners but a large intellectual group aiming to research and \nexperiment. Particularly significant are the relationships with the \nlocal artisans in the area where the company was born, and the \ninternational relationship, helping to spread its ideas. Listening \nto people is crucial. More and more people, sophisticated \npeople, looking for history and culture in the things they choose.\nTATO takes culture into particular account and is engaged in many \nprocesses. Since 1968 \nshe has worked as a designer \nfor the Italian company Driade, \ncreating some important system \nand furniture designs and \nhelping to shape the corporate \nimage with her outfitting and \nexhibitions. Her activity as a \ndesigner goes alongside her \nwork as interior designer, with \nprojects for houses, offices, \nshowrooms and stores.\nAntonia\nAstori\nLorenza Bozzoli was born in \nMilan, where she studied at the \nAccademia di Belle Arti di Brera.\nIn 1985 she began working as \na fashion designer for Fiorucci, \nBasile, Plein Sud, Sergio Rossi \nand Camper among others. In \n1996 she became passionately \ninvolved in industrial design \nfor Antiquità, Viceversa, Alessi, \nDilmos, Dedon and Moooi. She \nhas participated in important \nexhibitions in Italy and abroad. \nShe lives and works in Milan \nwhere she has her own design \nstudio.\nLorenza\nBozzoli\nGiulia and Guido Guarnieri are \nfond of Milan and 1950s and \n60s design. After graduating \nfrom the Politecnico di Milano, \nthey became involved in various \nprofessional projects regarding \ndesign, video art and marketing, \nboth in Italy and in Europe. \nGiulia is currently a brand \nmanager for an Italian fashion \ncompany and Guido is an art \ndirector for a design company.\nGiulia and Guido\nGuarnieri\nHisham Kulhanek was born in \nPrague in 1958.\nIn 1970 he moved to Amsterdam \nwith his family. After studying \nat the Delft University of \nTechnology, he decided to move \nto Milan where he started a long \npartnership with the Japanese \ndesigner Makio Hasuike. Now \nhe runs a multidisciplinary studio \nfocused on product design. He \nhas been a teacher at the Istituto \nEuropeo di Design (IED) in Milan, \nand has run some workshops \nat the Domus Academy and at \nthe Politecnico di Milano for \nthe Master’s degree in Strategic \nDesign.\nHisham\nKulhanek\nGianluigi Landoni is an architect \nand designer. He graduated \nfrom the Politecnico di Milano. \nAfter many experiences in \narchitecture and industrial design \nstudios, since 1994 he has \nworked as a freelance alongside \nnumerous design companies. \nHe has participated in various \nexhibitions and contests \nfor both public and private \nworks, receiving awards and \ncommendations.\nHe has been a teacher at the \nIstituto Europeo del Design (IED) \nin Milan.\nGianluigi\nLandoni\nMatteo Nunziati is considered \none of the most influential \ninternational architects and \ndesigners of his generation. He \nreceived numerous important \nawards for his works in product \ndesign; his projects, exclusive \nand enhanced by the skillful \nselection of materials and \nfurnishings, usually chosen from \nthe production excellence of \nMade in Italy design, have been \npublished in the major Italian and \ninternational magazines. His solid \nexperience led Nunziati carry out \nteaching activities at important \ninstitutions such as Domus \nAcademy, the National Taipei \nUniversity of Technology, the IDI \nInterior Design Institute of Milan \nand the Tshinghua University \nShenzhen in China.\nMatteo\nNunziati\nAlessandro Pasinelli began by \nstudying fashion and textile \ndesign in Milan. In 2004 he \nopened his own multidisciplinary \nDesign Studio dealing with \ndesign, interior, styling and art \ndirection. He collaborates with \nmany companies, editorial offices \nand photographers. He collects \ndesign pieces by great Italian \nMaestri, loves green projects \nand the contamination between \nart, fashion and design, always \nlooking for new communicative \nlanguages. \nHe lives and works in Milan, \ncollaborating with a multitasking \nteam able to offer varied creative \nsolutions.\nAlessandro\nPasinelli\nContemporary designers\nCorrado Corradi Dell’Acqua \n(Milan 1905 - Varese 1982) \nwas a law expert, an amateur \nwriter, and quietly became \na designer. His dachshund’s \nname was Azucena like the \ncompany Corradi had started \nin 1947 with two other young \nMilanese intellectuals, Luigi \nCaccia Dominioni and Ignazio \nGardella. Corrado Corradi had \nfun designing chintz with Luchino \nVisconti and he liked ceramic. He \ndesigned lamps made with glass \nfrom Milan’s tramcars and many \nother objects for the house, with \na precise idea of living in mind.\nCorrado\nCorradi Dell’Acqua\nIgnazio Gardella (Milan, 1905 \n- Oleggio, 1999) was one of \nthe leading figures in Italian \n20th century architecture \nEven before the war he had \nperformed a series of jobs for \nthe upper classes of Piedmont \nand Lombardy, clients whom he \nwas able to interpret in many \nimportant projects in the period \nof Reconstruction when he was \nat the forefront in proposing \na new idea of architecture. In \n1947, he founded Azucena with \nLuigi Caccia Dominioni and \nCorrado Corradi Dell’Acqua. \nUntil the 1990s, Gardella would \ncontinue designing furniture and \naccessories, as well as carrying \non his extraordinary activity as \narchitect.\nIgnazio\nGardella\nAlready experimenting with \nnew materials such as plastic \nfelt and curved plywood before \nbecoming an architect, Eugenio \nGerli (Milan, 1923 – 2013) \nopened his firm in 1949.\n1957 marked the start of a long \nand extraordinary partnership \nwith Osvaldo and Fulgenzio \nBorsani and Techno, for whom he \ndesigned the historic operating \nsystem Graphic (1968) and other \nicons such as the PS142 and \nS142 seats. In the 1970s, he was \njoined in the business by his \nsons, Enrico and Guido, who now \nalso take care of the Archive.\nEugenio\nGerli\nAlberto Rosselli (Palermo, \n1921 – Milan, 1976) graduated \njust after the end of the war \nfrom the Architecture Faculty \nof the Politecnico di Milano. \nFrom the start of his career \nand in parallel to his activity \nas architect, he carried out \ntheoretical studies and worked \nas a designer in different \nfields, from product design to \nfurniture, to transport. In 1953, \nas director, he brought out the \nmagazine “Stile Industria”. In \n1956 he was Chairman of the \nItalian Association of Industrial \nDesign (ADI). His intense work as \narchitect was carried out in the \nPonti-Fornaroli-Rosselli studio, \nbecoming a co-creator in its \nprojects in the 1950s.\nAlberto\nRosselli\nModern designers\nFounded by Daniele Daminelli.\n“I like the idea of bringing \nelements of the past into the \nfuture.”\nInterior designer by training \nand founder of Studio2046, \nDaniele Daminelli imagines and \ndesigns contemporary items \nthat combine the strength of \nindustrial processes with the \nrefinement of traditional and \nartisanal work. In his design \npractice the attention is \nespecially placed on the details, \non the harmony of proportions, \non the relationship between \nmaterials and on the calibration \nof the colors.\nStudio\n2046\nGio Ponti is one of the most \nimportant figures in 20th century \narchitecture and arts. From 1923 \nto 1930 he was artistic director \nof Richard Ginori; in 1928 he \nfounded the magazine “Domus”, \nwhich would be followed by \nother great publishing feats such \nas “Stile”. Dating from the late \n1920s are the “typical homes”, \nwhich combined the concept \nof Italianness with an interest in \nrationalist theories. Right from \nthe start, he took part in the \nTriennale design expositions in \nMilan. With Antonio Fornaroli \nand Alberto Rosselli, in the \nstudio in Via Dezza which would \nbecome his home, he conceived \nan extraordinary series of \nprojects, expressing his “finite \nform” theory in the fields of \nfurniture with the “organized \nwalls”, design and
