He \nwrote in his diary, “It has a monastic \natmosphere of quiet concentration. I’m \nshown into a boardroom where we are \nat least eight around the table, including \nZaha’s partner Patrik Schumacher, her \nhead of design Melodie, her contract \nadvisor Maha, and Zaha herself. I think, \nOK, we’re getting serious.” After showing \nthem several catalogues to give them a \ntaste of Slamp’s original, romantic soul, \nand explaining a bit about their approach \nto manufacturing, Hadid gives Coates \nher personal seal of approval. \nOn May 22, 2012, a few days after their \nencounter, research and development \nbegins. As with every collaboration with \na designer, the first step was to send a \nkit of Slamp’s exclusive materials, as well \nas an assembled lamp to take apart. Zaha Hadid and \nher partner Patrik Schumaker show up \nwith others, and the tension can be cut \nwith a knife. Luca and Nigel explain the \nengineering and illumination techniques, \naspects Studio Hadid fully entrusted to \nSlamp’s know-how. The products have \nsomething magic about them, and the \nlight gives them extraordinary energy. \nThey generate sophisticated atmosphere \nwhile casting the right glow, even over \nsurfaces like a tabletop. Zaha is especially \ntaken with the wider version, with black \nshaded edges. \nWe can say that on November 17, 2012, \nin London’s Goswell Road studio, Aria \nand Avia come to life. \nBetween the end of February and the \nbeginning of March, a month before \nthe official launch during Milan’s 2013 \nEuroluce\u002FSalone \ndel \nMobile, \nfour \nprototypes to be seen by the public are \napproved. Avia comes in four sizes, both \nin all white and all black, and Aria in one \nsize, in transparent polycarbonate with \nprinted, shaded black borders. When \nasked to comment on the final product, \nZaha says, “Sweeping motion lifts and \nturns both Avia and Aria. Like billowing \nclouds, light ripples across their blurred \ninterplay of solid and void, evolving, \ncompressing and contracting from every \nangle.” \nOn April 11, 2013, right in the middle of \nMilan’s Euroluce, Nigel receives a call \nfrom Melodie to let him know that Zaha \nmay visit the stand herself. The stand is \nbuzzing with designer interviews, clients \ninterested in the newest collections, \njournalists taking photos to publish them \nlater in their blogs…but no hint of Zaha. \nThe closer it gets to closing time, the \nmore hope grew that she would visit; \nthe Slamp team grows disappointed, and \nconfesses the day after that they’d been \nthinking, “maybe something came up”. \nInstead, she shows up minutes before \nthe stand closes, in a black coat and her \nsunglasses holding her hair back from \nher face. With every step she takes, \nthe crowd separates, and everyone asks \nthemselves if it’s actually her. Some take \nphotographs; it’s not everyday that one \nis a meter away from Zaha Hadid. She is \nimposing yet delicate and open, smiling \nfor an extra moment at anyone who \ncatches her eye. Everyone from Slamp \nwelcomes her. Luca Mazza shows her \nthe space, bringing her to the centre \nwhere her creations,  Aria and Avia are \non display. She sits on a sofa and silently \nobserves alongside her closest friend and \nlongtime collaborator, Camiran Rasool, \nowner of the marble company Citco. \nThis is the beginning of two successful \ncollections that for almost 10 years \nhave seen exhibitions, retrospectives, \ninternational \nprojects, \nand \nother \nimportant events, Dubai’s Opus Tower, \nSeoul’s Dongdaemun Design Park, The \nTokyo Opera House, Mexico City’s \nMuac, Rome’s Maxxi, and Dubai’s Heller \nGallery. \nIn 2015 the collection expands with Aria \nTransparent, available in three sizes and \nfitted with an integrated LED source. It’s \npresented in the 2015 Euroluce stand by \nPatrik Schumaker himself. \nMarch 31, 2016, less than two weeks \nbefore the launch of the luxe Aria Gold, \nmetallised using aluminium vaporisation, \nthe devastating, sobering news of Zaha’s \npassing arrives. Slamp’s hub falls silent; \nthere are no appropriate words to \ndescribe the loss. \nThe creative affinity between Slamp and \nStudio Hadid, the extraordinary people \nlike Melodie Leung, Maha Kutay, and \nWoody Yao, the constant respect and \nkindness throughout every step of the \ndesign process allow for a continuing \nrelationship, richly evolving to the \npoint of moving beyond simply that of \nprofessional to esteemed, personal. In \nApril of 2018, Slamp works with them \nto present a limited 99 piece collection \nin three colours, Blue, Turquoise, and \nUltramarine: Avia Edition celebrates \nZaha Hadid’s first collection for Slamp. \nIn March 2020, the Avia collection \nevolves with black and white versions \nthat fade from top to bottom, replacing \nthe current versions in the catalogue.
