Designers Rune \nKrøjgaard and Knut Bendik Humlevik, along \nwith NORR11 founder and partner Tommy \nHyldahl, went on a quest to China looking for \ninspiration to design a modern Scandinavian \ntake on the ancient Chinese Horseshoe Chair. \nIt can be said that the design goes more than \n700 years back, as they found an armrest on \na chair dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, a \nperiod where Marco Polo was still in China. This \nbecame the inspiration for the Shanghai Chair. \nThey started working with talented craftspeople \nand through trial and error, tweaking small \ndetails over the years, the final result is a \ndistinctively modern take on the Yuan Dynasty’s \nHorseshoe chair.\nThe Shanghai chairs were one of the first chairs \nproduced by NORR11. The Shanghai Chair was \noriginally produced in Asia to preserve the \noriginal production methods of connecting solid \nwood pieces using woodworking joints and rarely \nusing any glue or nails. In 2017 production was \nmoved to Europe and the Shanghai Chair was \nreintroduced to the market.\nThe Shanghai Chair features a steam bent solid \nash wood frame and a seat of handwoven paper \ncord or leather. The back and the armrest play a \ncentral role in the chair’s construction, giving it \nan iconic shape and firm support. The high back \nprovides comfortable support and the armrest \neffortlessly surrounds the body of the chair.
