The quip contains a grain of truth, especially \nfor those who have been able to witness the evolution \nfrom an “absolutely modern” society to the complex, \ncontradictory, post-modern world in which we now live: \na future that has been imagined very differently across \nthe decades, but in which today – like it or not – all the \nplayers involved in the making of our residential habitat \nhave to move, from designers to manufacturers, experts \nand of course those who love and use furniture and fur-\nnishings as objects of affection. \nThe fantastic visions of futuristic settings of the \n1960s and 1970s, the eclecticism of the 1980s and 1990s, \nhave been replaced for some time now by furniture \nand objects that try to defy the passing of the years, the \ndecades. Antonio Citterio has been and still is one of \nthe designers that have demonstrated the greatest skill \nin this far from easy exercise, especially in his work for \nMaxalto: the brand which like a mythological animal \ncapable of passing through fire unscathed has crossed \nover 40 years of design history, keeping faith with  \nthe idea of renewing our way of living without being \nseduced by passing fashions. \nFUTURO SENZA TEMPO\nProgettare, usare, rinnovare ambienti domestici significa \noggi anche fare tesoro delle esperienze, delle cose  \npassate. Si può così idealmente pensare a una collezio-\nne di mobili come tante “stanze”, in ognuna delle quali \npuò entrare un mondo personale, di cui mobili, oggetti, \ntessuti sono la memoria presente e futura. \n“Il futuro non è più quello di una volta”. È un nostalgico \nargomento che si sente spesso, condiviso da romantici  \ne realisti. C’è della verità dietro questa boutade, specie \nper chi ha fatto in tempo a vedere l’evoluzione da una \nsocietà “assolutamente moderna” a quella attuale,  \ncomplessa, contradditoria, post-moderna: quel futuro \nche è stato immaginato molto diversamente per decenni, \nma dentro cui oggi, volenti o nolenti, si trovano a muo-\nversi tutti gli attori sulla scena del design per l’abitare - \nprogettisti, produttori, esperti e naturalmente chi ama  \ne usa mobili e arredi come oggetti d’affezione.  \nLe fantastiche visioni di ambienti futuribili degli \nanni 60\u002F70, l’eclettismo degli anni 80 e 90 hanno da \ntempo lasciato il posto a mobili e oggetti che provano \na resistere al passare degli anni, dei decenni. Antonio \nCitterio è stato ed è uno dei designer che si sono dimo-\nstrati più abili in questo esercizio certamente diffici-\nle, ma che a lui è specialmente riuscito nel lavoro per \nMaxalto: l’azienda che, come un animale mitologico \npassa indenne attraverso il fuoco, ha attraversato più di \nquarant’anni di storia dell’arredamento, fedele all’idea di \nrinnovare il modo di abitare senza cedere alle mode.\nTimeless future: the rooms of the Maxalto world\n",4,{"image":30,"text":31,"number":32},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F29\u002Fb4ade94ec53af4ca5a3c8dbbb9e0fe.5.png","6\n7\nINTRO\nINTRO\nby Stefano Casciani\nTYPES AND MATERIALS,  \nRESEARCH AND PRODUCTION\n \nThe rooms of the home may return to their traditional func-\ntions, but this does not rule out – and even stimulates – the \nchallenge to update other types, forms and details of objects \nand furnishings, which together create the domestic identity.\nHaving begun precisely with the pursuit of new forms \nfor the creations of cabinetmaking in the great Italian \ntradition, over the years the production of Maxalto has \nshaped its identity with the perfection of fine materials: \nthey include the use of wood, in varieties such as Wengè, \nwhich Citterio was one of the first to widely explore. \nTogether with modern classic forms inspired by Art \nDeco elegance, this approach has set many of the fur-\nnishings of Maxalto apart over the long term. \nNevertheless, even the most successful materials need \nto be taken towards new possibilities. So for the Alcor \nseries of cabinets and tables, the latest collection reprises \nthe use of Chilean Tineo wood, with a damier (checker-\nboard) motif. There are more metal structures to sup-\nport the tables and cabinets, in cast aluminium treated \nwith finishes that make it resemble burnished bronze: \ndue to their great attention to detail, these structures \nbring yet another classic-modern reference to mind,  \nthe artistic skill of Diego Giacometti – brother of the \nmore famous Alberto – creator of extraordinary bronze \nfurniture, at times as a collaboration between the two.  \nGreat attention to detail has also gone into the forms \nand coverings of the new Apollo, Aurae, Amoenus Soft \nand Otium Soft sofa series: particular stitching stands \nout on the more palpably structured textiles at times \nwith a geometric pattern, and on the leather coverings, \nwith a different version for almost every model. \nThe painstaking workmanship, however, does not \npreclude application of the industrial know-how of B&B \nItalia, visible for example in certain structures that \nsuggest those of the Caratos seating: series already in \nproduction that nevertheless fit perfectly into the latest \ncollection. The objective of a unified catalogue seems to \nhave been pursued and achieved, and the idea of a grand \nMaxalto home made of many “communicating rooms”  \nis again materialized.\nTIPI E MATERIALI,  \nRICERCA E PRODUZIONE\n \nLe stanze della casa possono tornare alle funzioni tradizio-\nnali, ma questo non esclude, anzi stimola la sfida a rinno-\nvare altri tipi, forme, dettagli di oggetti e mobili, che tutti \ninsieme creano l’identità domestica.\nIniziata proprio con la ricerca di nuove forme per  \nle lavorazioni di ebanisteria della grande tradizione  \nitaliana, la produzione Maxalto ha creato negli anni la \nsua identità con l’aggiungersi nel corso del tempo  \ndi materiali pregiati: tra questi l’uso del legno in essenze \ncome il Wengé, che Citterio ha ampiamente sperimentato \nper primo e che insieme alle forme classiche moderne \nispirate all’eleganza Art Deco ha distinto a lungo più \nmobili Maxalto. Eppure anche i materiali con più suc-\ncesso hanno bisogno di essere accostati a nuove possibi-\nlità. Così l’ultima collezione riprende per la serie  \ndi contenitori e tavoli Alcor il caratteristico legno cileno \nTineo, con un motivo damier (a dama). Aumentano  \nle strutture metalliche di supporto a tavoli e contenitori, \nin fusione d’alluminio, trattato con finiture che lo fanno \nassomigliare a un bronzo brunito: per la cura dei detta-\ngli in queste strutture viene in mente ancora un riferi-\nmento classico-moderno, la sapienza artistica di Diego \nGiacometti - fratello del più famoso Alberto - creatore  \ndi straordinari mobili in bronzo, a volte in collaborazio-\nne tra i due. Anche nelle forme e nei rivestimenti delle \nnuove serie di divani Amoenus, Auræ, Otium molta \nattenzione è data ai dettagli: su materiali tessili più \nstrutturati e caratterizzati a volte da un disegno geo-\nmetrico si distinguono cuciture particolari, quasi una \ndiversa per ogni modello, fino alla combinazione di \ninserti tra pelle (o cuoio) e tessuto. \nTanta cura del dettaglio per l’esecuzione artigianale \nnon esclude però l’uso del know-how industriale B&B \nItalia, che è riconoscibile ad esempio in certe strutture, \nche richiamano quelle delle sedute Caratos: modelli già \nin produzione e che pure si inseriscono nell’ultima col-\nlezione. L’obiettivo di un catalogo unitario sembra per-\nseguito e raggiunto, l’idea di una grande casa Maxalto \nfatta di tante “stanze comunicanti” si materializza ancora.\nMODERN NEO-CLASSICS  \nOF INTERIOR DESIGN\nFor Citterio, to formulate a new collection that treasures \nclassic interior atmospheres while inventing new ones means \nrethinking the very nature of our models of living, every  \nsingle time. \nBorn and raised on the idea of Piero Ambrogio Busnelli \nand Afra & Tobia Scarpa – re-design the modern tra-\ndition, reinvented through very refined craftsmanship \n(above all in the forms of wood as a preferred material) – \nwith the work of Antonio Citterio the Maxalto furniture \nhas reached the point of embodying a catalogue  \nof modern neo-classics. Modern because it is ideally \nlinked to the visions of the most libertarian masters like \nJean-Michel Frank, with respect to the excessive rigor \nof Le Corbusier or Mies van der Rohe. Neo-classics, \nbecause their forms and finishes are filtered by the con-\ntemporary perspective of an Italian architect. \nThe cultural roots are important, and the humanistic \norientation of the designer is essential to approach  \nthe various scales with the same artful intelligence. \nWhile he designs the construction of brand new build-\nings, infrastructures or entire skyscrapers, Citterio is \nwell aware of the fact that in interiors, for many reasons, \nthe forms and types of the furnishings always change \nmore slowly, without radical breaks with the past.  \nThe alternative rituals of living in “revolutionary” times \nlike the late 1960s, the ideas of multifunctional and \ncommunitarian environments, the utopia of “design for \neveryone,” have been followed by a phase of rethinking \nthat still continues today. \nThe home and its traditional spaces – living rooms,  \ndining rooms, bedrooms – return to their status as a \nnucleus of social interaction, with some big difference. In \nthose same spaces, also thanks to an exceptional accelera-\ntion of technology, it is now possible to have both personal \nand electronic communication: to have a dialogue over \ngreat distances, to interact with sophisticated devices, or \nsimply to rediscover the dimension of play, enjoyment, \nconversation. In this domestic scenario that is undoubt-\nedly more complex than in the past, Maxalto’s idea of a \nclassic modernism (or a modern classicism) conserves \nits value in the existing models; but the new products for \n2020 designed by Citterio, like the entire corporate sys-\ntem that lies behind and around them, organically evolve \nto the point of revealing a project of interior culture \nupdated to adapt to the changes in our lifestyles. \nA multiplication of types, materials, coverings, fabrics, \nforming a coherent whole in a collection incorporated in \nprevious collections; yet in terms of breadth and variety,  \nit almost seems to constitute a new identity for all the pro-\nduction, for the entire company and not just its catalogue.\nNEO-CLASSICI MODERNI  \nDELL’INTERNO\nConcepire una nuova collezione, che integra quelle esistenti \ne insieme inventa altre atmosfere d’interni, per Citterio \nsignifica ripensare ogni volta la natura stessa dei modelli \ndell’abitare. \nNati e cresciuti dall’idea di Piero Ambrogio Busnelli  \ne Afra e Tobia Scarpa - rifarsi alla tradizione moderna, \nreinventata attraverso una raffinatissima esecuzione \nartigiana (soprattutto nelle forme del legno come mate-\nriale eletto) - i mobili Maxalto con il lavoro di Antonio \nCitterio sono arrivati a comporre un catalogo  \ndi neo-classici moderni. Moderni perché idealmente \nlegati a visioni di Maestri più libertari come Jean-\nMichel Frank, rispetto al troppo rigore di Le Corbusier \no Mies van der Rohe: neo-classici perché filtrati nelle \nforme e nelle finiture attraverso lo sguardo contem-\nporaneo di un architetto italiano. Le radici culturali \nsono importanti, l’impronta umanistica del progettista \nè essenziale per affrontare le diverse scale con la stessa \nintelligenza del disegno. Mentre progetta la costruzione \ndi edifici nuovissimi, infrastrutture o grattacieli interi, \nCitterio sa bene che negli interni, per molte ragioni, \nforme e tipologie dei mobili cambiano sempre più lenta-\nmente, senza clamorose fratture col passato.
