Dopo aver fre-\nquentato le scuole industriali si diploma all’Accademia \ndi Belle Arti di Firenze come scenografo e contribuisce \nnegli anni con la sua creatività allo sviluppo dell’attivi-\ntà del padre Plinio nel settore dell’illuminazione. Dopo \nalcuni anni e varie esperienze nel campo della sceno-\ngrafia inizia l’attività professionale nello studio situato \nnel centro storico di Lucca. La sua attenzione è volta \nall’inizio  alla progettazione d’interni e allestimenti per \nnegozi, ristoranti, alberghi e bar. La necessità di com-\npletare i suoi progetti lo spinge a disegnare e a  realiz-\nzare in proprio gli apparecchi illuminanti. Siamo negli \nanni cinquanta, inizia la produzione e il primo catalogo. \nIn questi anni Elio Martinelli mette in risalto il suo estro \nsemplice e rigoroso dando un forte impulso all’azienda \nche diventa un punto di riferimento nel design italiano \nnel campo dell’illuminazione. Elio Martinelli inizia poi a \ncollaborare con noti progettisti del settore ottenendo \npremi e riconoscimenti. Sotto la sua guida l’azienda \npartecipa nel 1966 alla prima edizione di Eurodomus, \nsu invito dell’architetto Gio’ Ponti, è poi presente anche \nalle edizioni successive del 1968, 1970 e 1972. E’ pre-\nsente inoltre alla XIV e XV Triennale a Milano nel 1973 \ne a tutte le edizioni seguenti della Fiera di Milano, Intel \ne ora Euroluce .L’ispirazione di Elio Martinelli è sempre \nstata la semplicità, la geometria e la natura vista nelle \nsue molteplici forme. Un crescendo di intuizioni utiliz-\nzando nuovi materiali come il metacrilato, sperimentato \nin svariati modelli fino dall’inizio dell’attività produttiva e \nprogettuale. Una ricerca di nuove idee, nuove tecnolo-\ngie e sistemi produttivi tenendo conto anche della con-\ntinua evoluzione delle sorgenti luminose. Da queste \nsperimentazioni nascono così diverse lampade come \nla Foglia, le Bolle, il Flex, il Serpente,il Cobra, Nuvole \nvagabonde, la Biconica e creazioni divertenti come le \nRondini, Cavallo Pazzo, Geronimo, e molte altre. Da \nsegnalare l’inserimento di alcuni modelli della colle-\nzione Martinelli Luce in importanti musei e presenti in \ndiverse pubblicazioni ed esposti in mostre di settore.\nNegli ultimi anni con l’introduzione di nuove sorgenti di \nluce, Elio Martinelli orienta la progettazione anche ver-\nso un settore più tecnico: nascono i sistemi e gli appa-\nrecchi di illuminazione di grandi dimensioni, di diverse \ntipologie realizzati  anche su misura, studiati per vasti \nambienti e per nuove esigenze. Elio Martinelli è instan-\ncabile, tutti i giorni è in azienda fino alla sua scompar-\nsa avvenuta nel 2004, ma ancora oggi dopo quaranta \nanni, alcune lampade da lui progettate, come il Ser-\npente ,Cobra, la Bolla, la Semisfera, il Gomito e molte \naltre continuano a comunicarci anche nell’attuale con-\ntesto così diverso,  quell’originale impulso progettuale.\nElio Martinelli was born in Lucca in 1922. He attends a \nvocational school and afterwards he obtains a diploma \nat the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence as stage desi-\ngner; over the years he gives his contribution, thanks to \nhis creativity, to the development of his father’s, Plinio, \nbusiness in the lighting sector. After few years and af-\nter several experiences in the stage design sector, he \nstarts his own business into his office located in the old \ntown center in Lucca. At the beginning he focuses on \ninterior design and fitting for shops, restaurants, hotels \nand pubs. Because of the need to finish his plans, he \ndraws and carries out lighting devices on his own. We \nare in the 50s, the production starts and the first cata-\nlogue is issued. During these years, Elio Martinelli em-\nphasizes his simple and rigorous inspiration giving a \nstrong boost to his company which becomes a referen-\nce point for the Italian design in the lighting sector. Elio \nMartinelli is well known in Italy as well as abroad and \nhe starts to work together with distinguished designers \nof this sector obtaining prizes and acknowledgments. \nIn 1996, during his leadership, the company takes part \nto the first edition of Eurodomus, at the architect Gio’ \nPonti’s invitation and afterwards it is present at the edi-\ntions in 1968, 1970 and 1972. It is also present to the \nelio martinelli\n14th and 15th editions of the Milan Triennial in 1973 \nand to all the following editions of the Milan Fair, Intel \nand now Euroluce. Elio Martinelli has always been in-\nspired by simplicity, geometry and nature considered \nfrom its manifold forms. A crescendo of intuitions using \nnew materials such as methacrylate, which has been \ntested with different methods from the beginning of the \nproduction and designing activity. A search for new \nideas, for new technologies and production systems \ntaking into account the constant evolution of sources \nof light, as well. From these tests very different lam-\nps result such as Foglia, Bolle, Flex, Serpente, Cobra, \nNuvole vagabonde, Biconica and funny creations such \nas some models of the Martinelli Luce such as Ron-\ndini, Cavallo Pazzo, Geronimo, and many others. We \npoint out the introduction of some models of the Mar-\ntinelli Luce collection into outstanding museums and \npresent in several publications and displayed during \nexhibitions of the sector. Recently, with the introduc-\ntion of new sources of light, Elio Martinelli steers de-\nsigning towards a more technical sector, too: it results \nlighting systems and devices with big dimensions, of \ndifferent typologies and customized as well, designed \nfor wide places and new needs. Elio Martinelli is tire-\nless, he spends every day into his company till he dies \nin 2004; but even now, forty years later, some lamps \nhe designed, such as Cobra, Bolla, Semisfera and \nmany others still convey that original designing impul-\nse even if in the present context which is so different.\nElio Martinelli est né à Lucca en 1922. Après avoir \nfréquenté les écoles industrielles, il obtient un diplôme \nde scénographe auprès de l’Académie des Beaux \nArts de Florence et contribue, grâce à sa créativité, au \ndéveloppement de l’activité de son père Plinio, dans \nle secteur de l’éclairage. Pour compléter ses réalisations, il éprouve alors \nle besoin de dessiner et de réaliser personnellement \ndes appareils d’éclairage. Il s’agit des années cin-\nquante; il débute la production et créé son premier ca-\ntalogue. C’est l’époque où Elio Martinelli met en avant \nson génie simple et rigoureux en donnant un impact \nimportant à l’entreprise qui devient alors une référen-\nce pour le design italien dans le domaine de l’éclai-\nrage. Elio Martinelli est connu en Italie et à l’étranger. \nIl débute alors sa collaboration avec des concepteurs \nde renom appartenant au secteur en obtenant des \nprix. Après avoir repris l’entreprise, il participe à la \npremière édition de Eurodomus en 1966, invité par \nl’architecte Gio’ Ponti. Il sera par la suite régulière-\nment présent aux éditions de 1968, 1970 et 1972. Il \nparticipe également à la XIVe et XVe Triennale à Milan \nen 1973 et à toutes les éditions suivantes du Salon de \nMilan, Intel et maintenant Euroluce. L’inspiration d’E-\nlio Martinelli part toujours d’une grande simplicité, de \nla géométrie et de la nature vue sous ses différentes \nformes. Un crescendo d’intuitions, en utilisant de nou-\nvelles matières comme le méthacrylate, expérimenté \nsur plusieurs modèles au début de son activité de \nfabricant et de concepteur. Il recherche de nouvel-\nles idées, de nouvelles technologies et de nouveaux \nsystèmes de production en tenant également compte \nde l’évolution constante des sources lumineuses. Ces \nexpérimentations donnent ainsi naissance à plusieurs \nlampes comme Foglia, Bolle, Flex, Serpente, Cobra, \nNuvole vagabonde, la Biconica et à des créations \namusantes telles que le Rondini, Cavallo Pazzo, Ge-\nronimo, et tant d’autres encore. Certains modèles de \nla collection Martinelli Luce ont été installés dans des \nmusées prestigieux et ont fait l’objet de publications et \nd’articles lors de nombreuses expositions du secteur. \nAu cours de ses dernières années d’existence, Elio \nMartinelli oriente la conception vers un secteur plus \ntechnique, pour ne pas négliger les nouvelles sources \nde lumière : c’est ainsi que naissent les systèmes et \nles appareils d’éclairage de grande dimension, de plu-\nsieurs types et également sur mesure, étudiés pour les \ngrands espaces et pour les nouvelles exigences. Elio \nMartinelli est infatigable, il passe ses journées dans \nl’entreprise jusqu’à sa mort en 2004. Aujourd’hui en-\ncore, quarante ans plus tard, les lampes qu’il a réalisé \ntelles que il Cobra, la bolla, la semisfera et tant d’au-\ntres, n’a pas cessé de communiquer, dans un contexte \nactuel si différent, une conception forte et originale.\nElio Martinelli wurde 1922 in Lucca. Nach der Gewer-\nbeschule erwirbt er sein Diplom als Bühnenbildner bei \nder Kunstakademie in Florenz und dank seiner Kreati-\nvität trägt er im Lauf der Jahren dazu bei, die Tätigkeit \nseines Vaters Plinio in der Beleuchtungsbranche zu \nentwickeln.Nach einigen Jahren und vielfältigen Er-\nfahrungen im Bereich der Bühnenbildnerei beginnt er \nseine Berufstätigkeit im Atelier in der Stadtmitte Lucca. \nAm Anfang beschäftigt er sich mit Innenraumdesign \nund Einrichtungen für Geschäfte, Restaurants, Hotels \nund Bars. Um seine Projekte fertigzumachen fängt \ner an, Leuchtapparate zu zeichnen und eigenhändig \nherzustellen.In den fünfziger Jahren fängt er an mit \nder ersten Produktlinie und dem ersten Katalog. In \ndiesen Jahren tritt Elio Martinelli mit seiner einfachen \nund strengen Eingebung hervor und dadurch fördert \ner sein Unternehmen, das jetzt zum Anhaltspunkt im \nitalienischen Design im Beleuchtungsbereich wird.\nElio Martinelli beginnt dann mit den bekanntesten De-\nsigners der Branche zusammenzuarbeiten und erhält \nPreise und Anerkennungen.Unter seiner Leitung und \nauf Einladung des Architekten Gio’ Ponti nimmt der Be-\ntrieb 1966 an der ersten Veranstaltung von Eurodomus \nteil, und wird dann bei den nächsten Veranstaltungen \n1968,1970 und 1972 ausstellen. Der Betrieb nimmt \nausserdem an der XIV und XV  Triennale in Mailand im \nJahr 1973 teil, sowie an allen anderen darauffolgenden \nVeranstaltungen der Messe Mailand, Intel und jetzt Eu-\nroluce.Elio Martinelli hat sich immer durch Einfachkeit, \nGeometrie und alle vielfältigen Formen der Natur inspi-\nrieren lassen. Es handelt sich um ein Stärkewerden von \nIntuitionen durch den Gebrauch von neuen Materialien \nwie Methacrylat, das Herr Martinelli in vielen Modellen \nexperiementiert bis zum Beginn seiner Herstellungs- \nund Designtätigkeit. Immer auf der Suche nach neuen \nIdeen, neuen Technologien und Herstellungssyste-\nmen, nimmt er zur selben Zeit auf die andauernde \nEntwicklung der Lichtquelle Rücksicht. Aus diesem Ex-\nperimentieren entstehen daher viele Lampen wie „Fo-\nglia“, „Bolle”, „Flex“, „Serpente“, „Cobra“, „Nuvole va-\ngabonde“, „Biconica“ und belustigende Erzeugungen \nwie „Rondini“, „Cavallo Pazzo“, „Geronimo“ und viele \nandere. Nennenswert ist die Einbeziehung von einigen \nModellen der Martinelli Luce-Sammlung in berühmte \nMuseen. Andere Lichtgeräte wurden und werden in \nverschiedenen Publikationen und Zeitschriften pu-\nbliziert und bei Messen dieses Bereichs ausgestellt.\nIn den letzten Jahren nach der Einführung von neuen \nLichtquellen richtet Elio Martinelli sein Design auch \nnach einem technischeren Sektor aus: es entstehen \nBeleuchtungssysteme \nund \nBeleuchtungsapparate \nvon grossem Umfang, und verschiedener Typologien, \ndie auch nach Mass entwickelt werden. Die werden \nfür ausgedehnte Räume und für neue Erfordernisse \nwohldurchdacht.
