Y después, hay una iluminación que \nsiempre es la más lejana al espectador, se utiliza \npara ser vista, desde una visión estética de lo \nque se ilumina.\nEntre el diseño de iluminación de una \nresidencia privada a un proyecto público,  \n¿Cuáles son las diferencias?\nEs importante tener en cuenta que la resi-\ndencia es donde la persona convive cada día y \nestá en contacto continuamente con la luz, por lo \nque la iluminación debe ser discreta, y tener un \nnivel de luz más tenue, más doméstico. En cambio, en el inte-\nrior siempre hay puntos de luz de referencia. \n¿Qué opinas de la paleta de colores que \nse establece en las lámparas de exterior?\nEl color es un tema recurrente, con diferen-\ncias de criterios, en el que se han establecido \nmuchas tendencias. Sin embargo, hace unos \naños era fundamental que todas las lámparas \nfueran de color acero corten o de un tono pare-\ncido. Actualmente, nos hemos dado cuenta que \ntodo depende del entorno, los colores que más \nencajan en el exterior son sus propios colores. \nEl acabado corten evidentemente sigue funcio-\nnando bien, pero ahora el mercado está introdu-\nciendo nuevos tonos como arenas, tierras, grises \ngrafitos. There are two types of directional-\nity. On the one hand, the light that goes from \nbottom to top, which needs something to proj-\nect against in order to see it, whether a tree, a \nfacade, a porch or a pergola. It is light designed \nto see the object. On the other hand, the light that \ngoes from top to bottom, which you use on a roof. \nIt is the light you use to let you see or to see \nwhere you are.\nHow does light help define a space?\nThis is an essential concept, especially when \nwe do residential outdoor projects. Es una luz pensada para \nver el objeto. En cambio, la luz que va de arriba \nhacia abajo, es la luz que utilizas en un techo, una \niluminación para que  puedas ver a tu alrededor.\n¿De qué forma la luz ayuda a delimitar un \nespacio?\nEste es un concepto esencial, sobre todo \ncuando hacemos proyectos de outdoor resi-\ndencial. Básicamente, siempre partimos de un \nterreno donde hay una casa con ciertas dimen-\nsiones, en el cual hay una iluminación que es cer-\ncana a la casa y después, está la iluminación de \nla propia casa, que emite luz hacia el exterior. \nAl final, la casa se convierte en una especie de \n“lámpara principal” del jardín y a partir de ahí, se \nva trabajando lo demás. Normally, architecture \nprovides the inhabited space acting as a buf-\nfer between man and nature, but when we go \noutside and take a lamp, this luminous object \nbecomes the point of contact. For this reason,  \nI find battery-operated, portable lights to be very \nvaluable, because they allow us to move the light \nand they are the element that connects the nat-\nural scale, which is immense, with the human \nscale. In that way, carrying the light allows you \nto create your own space within nature.\nHow do you create a visual narrative \noutdoors? \nIn the outdoors, we can work in an almost \ntheatrical way, precisely because we have a \ndark environment to start with, and with a little \nlighting we can establish lighting hierarchies. \nThe narrative is created by balancing the differ-\nent levels of light and\u002For generating contrasts. \nUsing the light, we define who the protagonist \nof our scene is, who are the secondary actors, \nwho enters first, who enters later, etc.\nOn the path that a person takes to get \noutside, we weave a story, and with the light-\ning narrative we give personality to the space. \nEach project tells a different story. Por esto, me parecen muy \nvaliosas las lámparas que funcionan con baterías, \nporque permiten mover la luz y son el elemento \nque conecta la escala natural, la cual es inmensa, \ncon la escala humana. Y así es como, llevar la luz \nte permite crear tu propio espacio dentro de la \nnaturaleza.\n¿Cómo creas una narrativa visual en el \nexterior? \nEn el exterior podemos trabajar de una \nmanera casi teatral, justamente por tener un \nentorno oscuro, y al tener poca iluminación pode-\nmos establecer jerarquías lumínicas. Se crea la \nnarrativa equilibrando los distintos niveles lumí-\nnicos o generando contrastes. Still, it is \nvery different since in an interior space you have \narchitecture as a frame and in an outdoor envi-\nronment you have nature. In that sense, one of the \nthings I start with every lighting design project is to \ndo the visuals of the project in the outdoor space. \nIf you have, for example, the possibility of looking \nat the outdoor space from an interior space, the \ninside out is something really important. How do \nyou perceive the exterior environment from the \ninside and the other way around? How do you \nsee the interior space or the focal points from the \noutside? That's a really interesting relationship to \nwork on.\nHow do you define your style and approach \nas a lighting designer?\nI would say that at my studio, BMLD, we \nwould always take really good care of details. \nWe try to integrate lighting and use light as mate-\nrial. Light is mat-\nter, it is invisible and we treat it as such. In those cases, you're free to do \nwhat you want with the project and you also \nhave much more direct contact with the person \nwho’s going to use the space. They can tell you \nexactly what they want while you build a much \nmore proper relationship with the end user.\nHow do you make a distinctive lighting \nenvironment?\nWe usually look at the space and see what \nit needs. When it comes to outdoor environments, \nI try to look at it as constructing a canvas for the \nperson walking through it. So you do the whole \npicture frame by frame, thinking about how the \nperson is going to feel, and what that person is \ngoing to see. And from there, I build the space \ntaking into account visuals, focal points, contrast \nand light in shadow, using a combination of tech-\nnical and decorative lighting. In outdoor spaces \nit is especially important to consider how much \nlight the space really needs and how much is \ngoing to remain in shadow.\n¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre diseñar \nun espacio exterior como espacio público \ny como espacio privado?\nLa mayor diferencia es que en los espacios \nprivados no hay tanta legislación a seguir. One of the biggest has to do with \nenergy and light pollution. The less energy we \nconsume, the better for our future, our children's  \nfuture, and so on. And light pollution also in terms  \nof wildlife and nature itself. And both bring with \nthem this question: How to balance what is needed \nto build the outdoor environment and at the same \ntime preserve nature? We are currently working \non a project in southern Spain, in Almeria, where \nthe lighting concept is geared towards actually \nlooking at the stars. It's a beautiful place that \nhas very little light pollution. It's all landscape.  \nAnd for that, we decided that what we really \nneeded was to create a very subtle lighting environ- \nment so that the space is perceived and creates \nthis sense of enjoyment. In the end, with so little, \nwe can see so much.\nCould you explain the concept of color \ntemperature?\nColor temperature has its physical element \non one side. It's a scientific way to identify the \nwavelength of light. It's a correlation between \ncolor temperature and color rendering. I mean, \nboth of them go together. It's conceived through \na black body that is heated up and then it's com-\npared to what the wavelength is like. We use it \nas a standard to see if light is cooler or warmer. \nIt's measured in degrees Kelvin. So the lower the \nnumber of color temperatures is, the warmer the \nlight is.\n¿Cuáles son los retos que crees que tiene \nla iluminación de exteriores?\nActualmente, la iluminación de exteriores se \nenfrenta a un par de retos. Uno de los mayores \nproblemas tiene que ver con la energía y la conta-\nminación lumínica. Cuanto menos energía consu-\nmamos, mejor será nuestro futuro, el de nuestros \nhijos, etc. Y la contaminación lumínica también en \nrelación a la fauna y la naturaleza. Y ambos tópi-\ncos traen consigo esta cuestión: ¿Cómo podemos \nencontrar el equilibrio para construir el entorno \nexterior, mientras preservamos la naturaleza? \nAhora estamos trabajando en un proyecto en el \nsur de España, en Almería, donde el concepto de \niluminación está orientado a mirar las estrellas. \nEs un lugar precioso que tiene muy poca con-\ntaminación lumínica, en donde todo lo que ves \nes paisaje. Y para ello, decidimos que lo que \nrealmente necesitábamos era crear un entorno \nde iluminación muy sutil para que el espacio se \nperciba y cree esta sensación de disfrute. Al final, \ncon tan poco, podemos ver mucho.\n¿Podrías explicarnos el concepto de tem-\nperatura de color?\nLa temperatura del color consta de una \nparte física, la cual, es una forma científica de \nidentificar la longitud de onda de la luz. Es una \ncorrelación entre la temperatura del color y el ren-\ndimiento del color. Es decir, van juntos. Talking about daylight, if you're very \nclose to Ecuador, your sense of light and how \nyou've been raised is completely different than a \nperson who's at the North Pole.\nIn terms of the use of light in terms of con-\ntrast, or color temperatures, the use of cooler or \nwarmer light, it absolutely has a cultural aspect to it.  \nWe've been working in India for the last decade. \nAnd the first project we started, we began work-\ning from here and then we got there and it didn't \nwork out at all. The client was completely used \nto a cooler light than what we would normally use \nin Spain. So we started to learn the temperature \nsensation in this country and it makes a lot of sense.  \nI mean, India has a very bright light. It is also very \nhot and they perceive the really warm light as \nheat and they don't want to feel the heat because \nit's very hot in terms of temperature. Another \nexample would be Sweden. A country that has \nvery short days in Winter, with a not so bright light. \nAnd when you go to visit countries like this, you \ncan notice that the light they use is diffused and \nvery warm.\nSo, in the end, light is used to create contrast,  \nto create ambiance. In addition to providing light \nto a space, you are providing ambiance through \nfunction, understanding where they are located \nand what they need.\n¿Crees que la temperatura del color tiene \nque ver con el lugar o con la cultura?\nLa iluminación está muy relacionada con el \nlugar y la cultura a la que pertenece. Hablando  \nde la luz del día, si estás muy cerca de Ecuador, \nla percepción de la luz y la forma cómo la has \nvivido es completamente diferente a una persona \nque está en el Polo Norte. \nEn cuanto al uso de la luz en términos de \ncontraste, o de temperaturas de color, de luz \nmás fría o más cálida, tiene absoluta relación \ncon un aspecto cultural. En el estudio hemos \nestado trabajando en la India durante la última \ndécada. Y el primer proyecto, empezamos a \ntrabajar desde aquí y no funcionó en absoluto. \nEl cliente estaba completamente acostumbrado \na una luz más fría que la que normalmente utiliza-\nmos en España. Así que empezamos a aprender \nla sensación de temperatura de ese país y tuvo \nmucho sentido. Es decir, en la India hay una luz \nmuy brillante. También hace mucho calor, perci-\nben la luz muy cálida como calor y por lo tanto \nnadie quiere aumentar esa sensación a través \nde la luz. Otro ejemplo sería Suecia. Un país que \ntiene días muy cortos en invierno, con una luz no \ntan brillante. Y cuando visitas países así, puedes \nnotar que la luz que usan es difusa y muy cálida, \nlo cual ayuda a su sensación térmica. \nAsí que, al final, la luz se utiliza para crear \ncontraste, para crear ambientes.
