And, sometimes, that \nfunction is to simply give us a chance to \nunwind and experience pleasure.\nAs we seek creative ways to make  \nthe most of our spare time, we might  \nfind ourselves in a castle-turned- \ncelebration-venue, a manufacturing- \nzone-turned-hip-urban-neighbourhood \nor new neighbourhood restaurant. A new \nmodern art museum of a soaring lobby \nconceived for nothing more than pleas-\nantly passing a free moment. Whatever \nthe scenario, lighting gives architects \nand designers the freedom to imagine \nnew ways for illumination to heighten  \nour enjoyment of the here and now.\nWhen we notice a restaurant from  \nacross the street in the evening, its \nlighting is the first element to register. \nWe instantly read the signs. Dim, warm \nlighting, and it is likely to be intimate, \nromantic, possibly upscale. Ultra-bright, \nand we think more along the lines of a \ncasual diner or ultra-modern concept. \nOnce we enter, the lighting choices \ndefine everything from the way the food \nappears to the ease with which we read \nthe menu to the comfort and confidence \nwe feel during conversation. \nThis is the type of smart, human- \ncentred illumination Poul Henningsen \ncalled “the good light.” It is illumination \nthat helps create immersive experienc-\nes in any setting. It can define distinct \nzones with different atmospheres, and \nsignal a space’s raison d’être. In a con-\ncert hall, it can inspire a sense of awe as \naudiences settle in and gaze upwards at \na stunning installation of chandeliers – \nand then signal a transition as the over-\nhead light fades and the performance \nbegins. It can enhance a desired mood \nor define spaces for dozens of moods, \nas in wellness centres that offer gyms, \nspas, cafés, and relaxation zones. Even \na large shopping mall can feel intimate \nwhen the displays and shops are zoned \nand the lighting guides us rather than \nilluminating everything at once. \nIn this sense, lighting is not unlike  \ncinematography. The \nbest destinations – like the best people \n– are those that make us feel welcome, \nimportant, and cared for. They are the \nones that offer us a unified, unique  \nexperience at every turn and in every \nspace, from the lobby to the bedside  \ntable. They connect with us without \noverwhelming, anticipate our wishes \n(sometimes better than we can our-\nselves), and understand when we need \nguidance and connection and when we \nprefer to be left alone to recharge.\nA hotel – a microcosm designed to meet \nnearly every one of our daily needs in a \nsingle space – has to make dozens of \nexperiences feel like a single, complete \none. It’s no easy feat. On the one hand, \neach space has different demands. The \nlobby needs to have distinct areas for \ngreeting guests, other areas for lounging, \nand others still for informal meetings or \ngroup gatherings. The guest rooms also \nneed to offer distinct work, sleeping, \nbathing, lounging, and dressing areas. In \nbetween, the amenities – from the gym, \npool, and sauna to the café and restau-\nrants – need to rejuvenate while energi- \nsing and meeting expectations from \naround the globe. Transitional spaces \nlike elevators and hallways – often an  \nafterthought – are in fact essential liai-\nsons that connect the various experienc-\nes and offer a sense of place, not of just \nanother generic passageway. \nWe want to feel at home – all while \nhaving a memorable experience worth \nwriting home about. And the power of \nlighting is that, across all these distinct \nspaces with distinct purposes, it makes \nthat contrast possible. Softly lit pendants \nand floor lamps in the lobby distinguish \none area from the next and signal what \nis expected of us in each space. Well-lit, \ninviting circulation spaces and confer-\nence areas make it easy to find our way \nand connect with others. In restaurants, \ndirected light over tables shows us at \nour best while making it easy to scan an \nunfamiliar menu.
