So that it is \nseamless and perfectly imple-\nmentable in a lot of different ar-\nchitectural designs. An architect \nis searching for light, atmos-\nphere and comfort, rather than \nfor lighting devices themselves. \nIt is not the luminaire that \nshould steal the show. The prod-\nuct should be minimally present \nin the architecture and should \nbe kept in the background. \nSo that the light itself can be the \ncenter of attention.\nHow to successfully integrate \nlighting in a design? That re-\nquires knowledge and insights \nabout products, technologies \nand most of all about the effects \nand impact of light. \nPositive effects of good lighting\nThere are many advantages \nconnected to choosing the right \nlighting. Think about the posi-\ntive effects on the quality of life \nand the influence on comfort, \nproductivity and even human \nhealth. The lighting choices \nyou make also affect the user’s \nenergy bill. On average, about \n20% of the energy consumption \nin a building goes to lighting. So \ntake the time to analyze the en-\nergy efficiency in a lighting plan.\nA desirable light quality de-\npends on three factors:\n1→ human needs\n2→ architectural considerations\n3→ energy efficiency\nHuman needs\nVarious studies proof that the \nquality of light in a building af-\nfects the sense of well-being of \nthe people in it. A well-designed \nlighting plan can for instance, \npositively influence the satis-\nfaction and productivity of office \nemployees. Owners or managers \nhave the potential to simulta-\nneously add value and reduce \ncosts by investing in qualita-\ntive lighting.\nIt is no secret that people \nare attracted to well-lit public \nfacilities, commercial complexes \nor parks. For as good lighting \nimproves the mood and makes \nthese places desirable.\nArchitectural considerations\nEvolutions in techniques and \ntechnology have made the role \nof a lighting specialist or light-\ning designer crucial for the suc-\ncess of an architectural project. \nThe possibilities have quickly \nbecome endless. At the same \ntime, knowledge is required to \ninsure a seamless integration \ninto modern architecture, as it \nbecomes more complex every \nday. Lighting design has \nbecome a creative extension of \narchitecture. The main objective \nof lighting in an architectural \ndesign can be reduced to com-\npliment the present shapes and \ncolors of that design.\nEnergy efficiency\nAiming for sustainability and \nenergy efficiency will result not \nonly in a smaller ecological foot-\nprint but it will also decrease \nenergy costs. Light control is a \nway to make lighting perform \nbetter and more efficient. It is separate \nfrom the infrastructure and \ntherefore stand on its own. This \nimmediately explains why com-\npanies increasingly opt for these \nlight fittings. They are flexible \nand dynamic, just like modern \nday workplaces are. Companies \nusing flex desks? Ever changing \nworkstations? Free standing \noffice lighting allows companies \nto easily adapt lighting to the \nneeds of the surroundings and \nof their employees. \nMore benefits\nThe advantages of using \nfreestanding office lighting are \nnumerous. For instance there is \nno installation required given \nthese light sources are not \nintegrated into the infrastructure \nof the office building. Should \nthe work environment change, \nthe luminaires change with. \nThere is no need for major \nrenovation work. \nPerhaps the biggest benefit \nof freestanding office lighting \nis the ability to adjust office \nlighting to the needs of their \nemployees. Because everyone \nhas different needs and \nexperiences lighting differently, \ndepending on their tasks or age. \nFor instance, older people need \nmore light than younger people \nand tasks using a computer \nnaturally need less light than \nother jobs. Did \nyou know? A light source that is \nincorrectly installed or adjusted \ncan cause glare, fatigue and \nvisual difficulties. There are two \nways in which glare can occur: \ndirectly and indirectly. In case \nof direct glare, the light source \nshines directly into the eyes or \nface. Indirect glare refers to the \nreflection of the light source on a \nreflective surface. \nThe Unified Glare Rating\nThe Unified Glare Rating (UGR) \nis an indication of the extent \nto which a light source causes \nglare. The rating helps to de-\ntermine how likely a luminaire \nis to cause discomfort to those \naround it. The UGR is very impor-\ntant when allocating light fittings \nwithin a lighting plan. Paying \nattention to this number can \nhelp you ensure that the lighting \nin your office is optimized. \nWhen measuring the UGR, \none must consider a number of \nimportant factors:\n– The size and shape of the \nspace in which the light source \nis present;\n– The distribution of light fittings \nacross the space; \n– The surface brightness or lumi-\nnance of the walls, ceiling, floor \nand other large surfaces (white \nwalls, for example, reflect lots of \nlight);\n– The type of light fitting \nand barrier;\n– The position of the observer.\nQuality levels and \nthe official standard\nThe higher the value, the more \nlight pollution there is. The av-\nerage Unified Glare Rating lies \nbetween 15 and 30. There are \n5 different quality levels in the \nUGR: 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28. \nThe particular quality lev-\nel that should be applied to \na specific space is official-\nly determined in a Europe-\nan EN standard (the NEN-\nEN-12464-1 standard). \nHowever, some places might re-\nquire good lighting without pol-\nlution in order to best serve their \nparticular purpose. For instance, \ncorridors require a UGR below 2. \nDrawing studios or design of-\nfices below 16. Office spaces in \ngeneral below 19 and staircases \nand elevators below 25.\nWhen the rating is below 10, \nthere is considered to be no \nglare, the so-called ‘zero-glare’.\nVariable rating\nIt is also important to mention \nthat the UGR rating is not a \ncharacteristic of a light fitting. \nIt is the combination of the \nbrightness of the light fitting, the \nbrightness of the environment \nand the interaction between \nour position and the corner. \nOnly one of these three factors \ncan be adjusted: the brightness \nof a light fitting. This means \nthat the UGR is variable, de-\nspite what is often thought. This \nalso means the UGR can be \ninfluenced by the presence or \nabsence of lighting. \nGiven the importance of good \nlighting for the well-being of em-\nployees and their concentration, \nit is definitely worth the effort to \nthink through the office lighting \nwith a lighting plan and to take \nthe UGR into account.\nWhy is good office lighting so important for your company and your \nemployees?
