What are the behind the scenes of working with glass, craftsmen, and \nongoing experimentation on materials? How does failing, between trials and \nerrors, allow to generate more creative energy?\nEach project takes shape through a multitude of prototypes, many of \nwhich lead to unexpected results and forms a rich tapestry of possibilities. \nIt is difficult to distil failure from learning. We share this process with the \nvenerable Venetian master glassblowers on Murano. Much like skilled \ncalligraphers, they safeguard an invaluable tradition, embracing it with a \nspirit of authenticity and meticulousness. Their craft is imbued with an \nacute sensitivity to gesture and rhythm.\nFor us, the realms of glass and light are boundless, unveiling surprises \nin the form of unforeseen nuances, shadows, and sensations. Their true \nessence lies in this perpetual expression, which in turn feeds our creative \nenergy.\nMoreover, the title of this exhibition, “DAL 달 ~ Drawing A Line,” carries \nthe Korean word “달” (Dal), signifying the Moon, a profoundly significant \nelement in Korean culture, deeply intertwined with lunar symbolism. The \nmoon has difference layers of meaning within this exhibition. Its orbit \netched across a cosmic canvas, reflecting an overarching process marked by \nsubtle continuous shifts, conjures associations with the rhythmic cadence \nof calligraphy strokes and our luminous creations. The nocturnal palette \nchosen for the presentation sees nuanced blacks gently bathed in the \nwarmth of each light source. Both alluding to the mystery of a singular \ncreative journey, where the force and courage of the creative spirit meets \nthe weight of material reality. Like a perpetual dance representing the highs \nand lows of the creative journey.\n18\nThe inspiration to create a dialogue between our design practice and Lee \nBae’s art came almost by chance. From our first meeting in Venice, and \nthen during Lee Bae’s visit to our studio in Treviso, walking and chatting \nin the park, surrounded by prototypes in the studio and the creations \ndisplayed in the Villa, we sensed a vibration connecting us.\nWe spoke about the organic strength of the materials we use in our design \nand artistic practices, from the relation between matter and fire, which \nshapes glass and creates charcoal, to the value and role of memory which \nenliven our imagination and interweave with our work. And so the idea \nbehind this exhibition emerged.\nWith this exhibition, we would love to draw a landscape of perception. \nWe want the viewer to feel the gesture, and its immediacy, and see the \nmovement that created the work. Giopato \n& Coombes’ practice uses light as a medium merging material and \nimmaterial, to redefine interaction spaces by capturing everyday moments \nand elevating them to a collective celebration of memories and sensations. \nGiopato & Coombes studio’s work spans unlimited editions and unique \ncommissions. The studio creates and organizes its own production \nthrough a network of Venetian artisans, varying from single experiments \nto controlled variations within the context of low batch hand-made \nproduction runs.\nLee Bae (b. 1956, Cheongdo, South Korea) monochromatic practice \nis a formal and immersive journey into the abysses of blackness. Subtly \nblurring the lines between drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, \nhe has developed his abstract aesthetics across categories to imbue the \nnoncolor with tangible depth and intensity. Charcoal, obtained by burning \nwood and used to revive fire, offers a powerful metaphor for the cycle of \nlife that has further inspired him to expand his exploration to include the \nfourth dimension of time. Until the early-2000s, he worked exclusively \nwith raw charcoal to create minimal, refined, mosaic-like assemblages of \ncharred wooden shards or chunks on canvas, as well as larger sculptural \narrangements of carbonized trunks. While he has moved on to solely \nworking with carbon black, a substance close to soot, Lee Bae’s latest \nseries of pictorial works crystallizes random elemental gestures, which he \npractices with charcoal ink on canvas and paper, recording his movement \nand time.
