They met at \nUniversity, in London in 2000, and have \nbeen together ever since. From their \npersonal relationship an unexpected \nprofessional chemistry blossomed which, \nyears later, took its current form in \nGiopato & Coombes.\nCristiana’s interest in design and artisanal \nobjects started early in life, through her \nmother’s passion for Murano glass and \na collector of antique glasses. “She used \nto take me with her on expedition trips \nsearching for the most hidden and saught \nafter of Master Blowers. \nTo assess the provenience of the glass, she \nalways touches the base of the glass. If it \nhas an imperfect central area, she was \nhappy! She would explain this was proof \nof real Murano artisans: it is the hallmark \nof the final gesture where the glass is \nfractured from the blowers cane. \n“Since then, I was fascinated by this \ndelicate material, which spilled over into a \ntroubled respect. It took me years to build \nup the courage to approach Murano glass \nand to create forms with it. Now, years \nlater, this glass is one of the stars of our \nvision and collection”.\n \nChristopher’s \napproach \nto \ndesign \nrepresented a challenge. “I shortlisted \ntwo subjects which for me revolved \naround technology: either Mathematics \nor Design. In the end I chose the unknown \nworld of innovation with the challenges \nassociated of not having the right answer, \nas Renzo Piano wrote “It’s like looking into \nthe dark”. Design is never right or wrong, \nthere are so many paths a project can \ntake.\nAfter years of designing for other \ncompanies, \nin \n2014 \nCristiana \nand \nChristopher decided to risk everything \nand \nlaunch \ntheir \nfirst \ncompletely \nindependent line of lamps. They filled a \nsmall VW van with their first prototypes \nand left for London, to participate in a \nsmall group exhibition. “It was so exciting, \nbut also somewhat crazy” laughs Cristiana, \nas \nChristopher \nsmiles \nreservedly, \nremembering their adventure.  “Once we \ngot to London we couldn’t believe how \nenthusiastic people were about our vision. \nWe received some contacts right away \nfrom architects and galleries and that was \nthe beginning of it all.”  \nCristiana and Christopher aim to create \nobjects that go beyond what meets the \neyes, something that evokes memories \nand emotions in people.\nChristopher recalls an experience in \nparticular: “We had a client from Japan \nwho wanted to decorate the house he was \nbuilding for himself and his grandfather \nwith our Bolle lamps.
