This \ntechnique gives the finished item a continuity of vein \npatterning typical of solid wood or solid colours, elimi-\nnating joint and edging defects.\nBending the melamine panel to create a seamless tran-\nsition from horizontal face to vertical sides is a very \ndelicate part of the production process. The decora-\ntive paper surface of melamine is very thin, but flexible \nenough to allow the piece to be bent. \nV-shaped cuts are made in the flat panel, their tips just \nreaching down to the substrate. The panel is then bent \nalong the cuts and the two parts are glued together to \nform a 90° corner.\nIn some cases, to mitigate the variation in the colour \nof the material due to the “stretching” that occurs in \nthe folding process (the surface becomes lighter), the \npiece is corrected in the folding points with special \npads which restore the colour of the melamine.
