The jury that year included, among
others, Gio Ponti, Marco Zanuso
and Alberto Rosselli. The DU30 was
immediately patented and appeared
on the cover of the first edition of Stile
Industria magazine in June 1954.
The unitary nature of the seat and
backrest results in a central cutting
and stitching effect that brings to
mind the contemporary works of
Lucio Fontana. Du 30 chair has a
shaped single shell in steel mesh
with moulded polyurethane foam
padding. Legs in bent welded iron
tubing with a textured, wrinkled black
finish (NERO RAL 9005). Upholstery
in Pelle Frau® leather. Fitted with a
lower “backbone”, the shell is attached
directly to each pair of legs with
screws.
Designed in late 1953, the DU30 is
without doubt Gastone Rinaldi’s most
famous design. In fact, in 1954 it was
the recipient of the Compasso d’Oro
award, known as the Compasso
d’Oro-Rinascente at the time,
in what was the first year the prize
was awarded.
