Herworksarealmostalwayslinkedtosimple
everydayobjectsortoparticularspatialand
architecturaldetails,leavingatleastsome
referencetorepresentativefunctionality.
Theyareworksintheprocessof‘becoming’:
abucket,achair,atube,oranarchitectural
element.Thesereferencesareonlyastarting
pointfromwhichtheartistthenmovesaway,
renderingtheworkintoastrangeautono-
mousobject,somewherebetweenfigureand
abstraction.Latelyhersculptureshavebeen
dividedintotwoopposingwaysofworking.
Oneseriesiscreatedthroughseveralover-
lappingstepsthatbeginfromaninitialmold
ofanobjectthatservesasafoundational
matrix.Ineachphasetheartistintervenes
bymakingsmallbutsignificantandpercep-
tiblealterationsbothtotheformsthatare
obtainedandtothesurface,makingthefinal
sculptureaphantasmagoricalrealityoftrem-
blinganduncertainskin.Thepreferredma-
terialforthisseriesofworksisaresinthat
issometimesmilkyandopaque,andsome-
timestransparentandglassy.
Thesecondseriesinsteadismoreabout‘ta-
kingaway’.Shestartsfromfoundobjects,
oftenmadeofplastic,whichbecometran-
sformedthroughinterventionmainlywitha
grindingwheel,untiltheyarealmosttwo-
dimensionalstructuresthatcontinuetore-
presentorrecalltheoriginalobject.These
aretwoopposingwaystoobtainresultsthat
atfirstglanceseemsimilar.Theseareflan-
kedbydrawingsthatcanportraysubjects
such as the new skyscrapers that have
sprungupinMilan,drawnweaklyoncarbon
paper,orreflectionsofwaterdefinedwitha
fewmarksofwhitepencilontracingpaper.
Thereisvideothatmimicsthestaticstate
ofaphotograph,orinterventionscreated
withonlythepresenceofalightsource.
Oneofthemostinterestingaspectsofthe
artististhatsheisasculptorandartistin
themostclassicsenseoftheterm,unlike
manyofherpeers.Wefindourselvesina
timewhenmanyyoungartistsarelooking
overtheirshoulders,reiteratingtheworkof
artistsofpreviousgenerations,witheach
exhibitioncompletelychangingtheirworks
andreferences,andtherebyrenderingthem-
selvesunrecognizable.
Giulia’sworkhasresistedallthis.Inher,as
withafewotherartistsofhergeneration,I
noteakindofhealthybarbaricgermofpos-
siblerecommencementintheimmediatefu-
ture.AsinCenci’sworks,thereisasortof
tabularasaorientationandamovingaway
fromthegeneraltrends,toworkwithdiffe-
renttimesandmodalities.Itisasifthesear-
tistsstartedagainfromgroundzero,from
thebasics,andfromthefewthingsthatare
secureandtruethattheyholdinmind.They
areartistswhobasetheirpracticeonanin-
tensephaseofworkinthestudio,whichem-
bracesthemedium(especiallypaintingand
sculpture,butalsoperformance)without
guilt,experimentinginaseriousmannerand
tryingtoproducesomethingreallynew.Itis
alsoevidentintheworkoftheseartiststhat
thereisresearchinthematerialstheyuse
thatareinseparablefromtheresultantform.
Hersoloexhibitioninthegalleryspacein
Pistoiawastitled,notcoincidentally,La terra
bassa. Almosteverythingwasplacedonthe
ground.Thesethingsintheirlightnesswere
rootedandfirm,forcingustopauseforape-
riodoftime,tostandbackabit,todoalittle
extraworktoperceivetheircomplexity,the

foundinthecourtyardsofouraffectedcoun-
tryhomes,createdfromseventeenthcentury
housesthathavehadterracesofreinforced
