TheworkofAliceCattaneo,atleast
untilnow,hasbeenexpressedintwoways:
throughplasticinterventionsinspaceand
videosequences.Inbothcasestheartistta-
kesupachallenge,inthesensethatthe
workitselfiscommittedtoreachingitslimit,
anddoingthisinviewofthespectator.Whe-
therphysical,staticordynamic,thislimit
affectsboththerelationshipofthesculpture
withthespace,therelationshipofbalance
betweenthebodies,thesenseoflogic,and
consequentlytheexpressionofmeaning.In
allinstances,Cattaneomakesuseofastra-
tegyofweakness:fragilematerialsthatare
smallinsize,videosequencesthatarevery
simpleandespeciallyshort.Thetwojugger-
naut themes, space and time, on which
usuallylargesumsofenergyarespenttode-
finetheoretically,areaddressedusinglimi-
tedmeans,butwithadecisiveprecisionof
purposewhichmakesthatweaknessintoa
force.Aforce,let’ssay,thatisabletomake
asignificanttheoreticalcontributiontothose
definitions,startingfrom
moreimmediatepheno-
menaandpuresensibi-
litythatstimulatesthem
andputsthemunderthe
attentionofanalysis.
Spaceisalwaysinvesti-
gated from its specific
characteristics;itisrare
forthesculpturesofCat-
taneo to disregard it
completely,andthentheyarereducibleto
theminimumsizeofanartifactthatcanfit
inyourhand.Theyhaveaplasticportability
thatallowsthemtodisappearamongthe
otherobjectspresentinaspace,andthen
becomesculptureagainifconsideredinre-
lationtothebodyandthehandthatholds
it.Inmostcases,thesculptureisidentified
asanambientinstallation,andtherefore
quitecomplexstructurallyandvisuallyde-
manding.Moreprecisely,thesculpturebe-
comesaproliferationinthespaceofele-
ments that the eye of the observer sees
combinedindifferentways,butalwayson
thebasisofstructuralandcompositionalru-
les,clearlyperceptibleandthereforebasi-
callysimple.Theeyeofthespectatorina
sense‘earns’howtheworkisdonesimply
byobservingitsdevelopment,whereitgoes
intheenvironment,andtheextravagantway
itoccupiesthespace.Thenatureofthework
involvesthisopeningtoinvestigation;the
workis‘open’inthesensethattheartist
explicitlytreatshermaterialsaselements
onastageinwhichallthecomponentsare
revealedthroughtheirmaking:muchlike
intheepictheaterofBrecht,inwhichnoil-
lusionsormysteryareallowed.Ateachmo-
menttheworkrevealsitsinteriorgrammar.
Thecomplexityoftheworkisthesamethat
wefindinthestructureofthings,ofreality
itself,understoodasanexperientialhorizon
thatincludestheinvisiblemicrocosmaswell
astheuniverse.Itbeginsfromasimplicity
thatiscomplicatedbyrepetitionandper-
mutationofitsrulesofconstructionandits
structurallinksthatarealwayspresentand
evident.[...]
Cattaneo’svideosareplayfulinthewaya
subtlehumorsnakesthroughthatcomes
fromunexpectedencountersbetweenunas-
suminggesturesandeverydayobjects.They
createwhatcouldbecalledmicroormini-
