Withaformalandconceptualprocessthat
isasclearasIngrid’sgaze,AndreaRomano
hassofarproducedanumberofconcise
works,consistentintheiraestheticquality,
thatexplorerepresentationasatransitional
spacebetweenthedomainofthevisualand
tactile.Thiswasthecasewiththetwoseries
ofworksthattheartistpresentedinhisfirst
soloexhibitionattheFluxiagalleryinMilan
in2013.Potsherds & Gaze isthetitleofase-
riesofpencildrawingsinwhichparticular
imagesfromtheanimatedcartoonThe Flin-
tstones,intheplaceswheretheshapesof
thecharactersgrazeortouch,areisolated
andrenderedabstract,reducedtopureline.
InthephotographicseriesCast of Pillow
(createdincollaborationwithphotographer
DelfinoSistoLegnani),weseeinsteadyoung
people’s bodies—hands, arms, and sto-
machs—capturedintheactofinteracting
with a cast polyurethane cushion. What
weldsthesetwoseriesofworktogethereco-
nomicallyinacohesiveexhibitionisnotjust
thethemeofcontact,butratherthetension
withwhichtheelementoftactilityistran-
slatedintoapurelyvisualquality,reaching
thelimitsofabstraction.

look,moregenerally,toamoreacuteform
ofourcurrentsensitivity.Images,infact,
arenotsimply‘everywhere’.Imagesarenow
intenseandamplified,saturatedwithafor-
malperfectionandstructuralexcessthrough
post-productionthatmakesthematthe
sametimeacute,perceptual,andabstract.
Theyareintangibleyettactile.
Romano,likeotherartistsinthewiderin-
ternationalcontext,isturninghisattention
totheminuteandimpalpabledetailsthat
gravitatearoundanimage,drawingtheout-
sideintothecenter,notbyonlyfocusingon
whatmightseeminsignificantbut,morera-
dically,bringingthismarginalitytoaformal
plane where form is scrutinized with as
muchambiguityasperceptualacuity.
