itincludesaclose-upimagewithonlythe
hairaroundtheface;everythingelseiscut
off,eventhetipofthechin.Ingrid,withher
clearbeauty,peersoutfromastandardde-
vice—themarbleframe—that,withitspre-
sence,isanintegralpartofthiswork.Its
resemblancetothoseframesinRenaissance
altarpiecesthatreplicateandamplifyele-
mentsofthearchitectureextendstheper-
spectiveframingofthesceneandconse-
quentlythecontinuitybetweentheimage
andthespace.
Inaphotothatdocumentstheinstallation
ofanotherworkofthesameseries, Claque
& Shill (Irene),setinthemarblequarryof
Zanbobbio(afewkilometersfromBergamo),
anotheroneofthesegraphiteportraitsen-
casedinaheavyframeofdarkmarbleis
lyingontheground,alongwithsomestone
slabsofalmostidenticalsize. Ingrid and
Irene arepartoftheseriesClaque & Shill
thatAndreaRomanostartedin2011andis
stilldeveloping:graphitedrawingspresented
inmassivestoneframeswhosecolorsand
veinspickupandcontinuesomeformalcha-
racteristicsofthedrawingsthemselves,as
inthecaseoftheimagesinhisseriesofti-
gers,andtheosmoticrelationshipthatis
establishedbetweenthespeckledpattern
ofthetiger’smaneandtheveinsofmarble
orgranitecrystals. Ingrid and Irene,howe-
ver,amplifytherelationshipbetweenthe
imageandthethingthatisolatesitfromthe
restofthespace—theframe—becauseof
thecontinuitythatextendsbetweenitand
thespaceitself,whichistheplaceofpro-
ductionwheretheframesweremadeand
wheretheyarenowdisplayed.
AndreaRomano,likeotherartistsofhisge-
neration,reactstowhatseemsagenerally
acceptedconcept—thepervasivenessofdi-
gitalimagesandtheirintangibleubiquity—
byfocusinghisattentiononwhat,onthe
contrary,seemsintendedtobecomeincrea-
singlyirrelevant,theirreduciblemateriality
ofvisualinformation.Tobeevenmorespe-
cific,youcouldsaythattheworkofAndrea
Romanoexplorestheambiguityinherentin
theveryconceptofthepicture,whenwe
conceiveofitas‘information’orasasetof
transmitteddatathatpassesfromoneme-
diumtoanother,oroneframetoanother.
