MONK
Afra e Tobia Scarpa disegnarono la sedia Monk
nel 1973, curando forma e finiture perché
esaltassero le qualità dei materiali. Il sedile e
lo schienale in cuoio preformato appoggiano
su due sezioni tubolari in acciaio per creare
una sedia estremamente comoda. Le gambe
in legno massello sono collegate due a due ad
incastro, mettendo in mostra in modo evidente
il fissaggio dei traversi e creando l’iconica
silhouette. Nel pensiero di Scarpa, Monk è
una seduta composta da pochi pezzi ben
fatti, combinati per creare un prodotto solido
e di qualità. Il nome Monk richiama lo stile
semplice, pulito e quasi monacale della sedia e
riprende l’iniziale della lettera M caratteristica
dei prodotti di Afra e Tobia Scarpa creati
per Molteni&C. La struttura di Monk diventa
modello per i prodotti Molteni&C realizzati da
Scarpa negli anni successivi e l’iconica seduta
torna, con delle gambe più sottili nella sedia
Mastro del 1981. Come diceva Scarpa “Penso
anche che la ripetizione possa essere una
cosa buona (e giusta) finché non inibisce la
straordinaria varietà di forme, materie, colori,
eventi che la vita ci offre e che l’arte dovrebbe
come minimo riconoscere.” Continuando a
promuovere la cultura del design nel mondo,
nel 2025 Molteni&C propone una riedizione di
Monk come parte della Collezione Heritage.
When originally designing the Monk chair
in 1973, Afra and Tobia Scarpa paid utmost
attention to the expressive qualities of the
materials, researching the shapes and finishes
that best communicated them. The seat and
the backrest were made of hide leather that is
fitted over two tubular steel sections to create
an extremely comfortable chair. The wooden
legs were interlocked two-by-two and expose the
meeting of the crosspieces. In Scarpa's thinking,
Monk is a seat made up of a few exceptionally
crafted pieces, combined to create a solid and
high-quality product. The name Monk evokes
the simple, clean, and almost monastic style
of the chair and refers to the initial letter M,
characteristic of the products by Afra and Tobia
Scarpa created for Molteni&C. The structure
of Monk becomes a model for the Molteni&C
products designed by Scarpa in the following
years, and the iconic seat returns with thinner
legs in the Mastro chair of 1981. As Scarpa
said (translated from Italian), “I also think that
repetition can be a good (and right) thing as
long as it doesn’t inhibit the extraordinary variety
of forms, materials, colors, and events that life
ofers us, and that art should at least recognize.”
Continuing to promote the culture of design
worldwide, Molteni&C presents a reissue of
Monk as part of the Heritage Collection in 2025.
“I imagined it as a single piece because
it was cheaper. But Angelo Molteni
changed the design. ‘No, no,’ he said,
‘we do things properly.’ So, we came
up with an iron structure stretched
between two identical frames, which
made the seat what it is.”
