Filo /2017 — design Andrea Anastasio
About shedding light
Foscarini fi rst met with the artist and
designer Andrea Anastasio when working
on Inventario. This dialogue led to the
development of various projects, which all
share a certain amount of experimentation
with languages that intersects art,
craftsmanship and design. Filo, a table lamp
produced in the reading and wall lamp
versions, in this sense overturns the
traditional construction of the lamp object,
breaking it down into its most basic units
and then putting them back together freely
to give every single component
expressiveness. As a result, the light
source, electrical cable and decoration
undergo a reversal of roles and functions.
The electrical cable is covered with
coloured fabric to become the decoration
and is then threaded through multi-coloured
hand-blown glass spheres and bulbs, which
on the one hand visibly transform it into
a long necklace, while on the other
ensuring shape and stability, acting like
counterweights and keeping it securely
attached to the hook on the metal frame.
The china diffuser which houses the light
source ideally completes the ‘jewel’,
metaphorically becoming its pendant.
A playful piece that is at the same time
conceptual, multi-material and
multi-coloured, with its own decorative
power and for this reason produced in
several variants obtained by the designer by
mixing different colours, shapes and
fi nishes for its components; this is why it
was awarded the best Euroluce product
with the Salone del Mobile Milano Award in
2017. Filo perfectly embraces Foscarini’s
desire to break the mould and innovate,
going beyond conventions and out of the
ordinary by thinking outside the box.
Some of the features of Filo, such as its
multi-material aspect and the delicate deco-
rative component, can also be found in
Gioia, nomen omen, which, according to
