About shedding light
Chap. 5 — Designing space with light
sun, refl ecting the poetic intent of its designer, whose rays of steel, each with its own
orientation, screen and refl ect the direct light upward and downward. A symbolic
piece, also in the choice of chromatic options, where gold – for example – expresses the
radiant energy that is unleashed.
The potential for furnishing spaces with light is pursued by Foscarini in residential
settings and public facilities, where the company’s products are selected and inserted,
although it has no specifi c contract division. The public spaces can also be those of
culture, like museums, foundations and galleries. For the exhibition Alberto Meda.
Tension and Lightness at the Design Museum of Triennale Milano (October 2023 – March
2024), the grand staircase of the Palazzo dell’Arte has welcomed a site-specifi c installa-
tion created by the designer himself. The protagonists are over thirty Chiaroscura
lamps, seventeen on each side, and made to measure: from the largest with a height
of over fi ve metres to the smallest with a height of 57 centimetres. The lamps with a
triangular section, hidden in the gaps between the columns in an arrangement that
fully respects the architecture, form a genuine luminous set in this case, almost a cho-
reography through the various dimming effects applied to the light.
One sector that has seen radical transformations over the last twenty years is that
of hospitality in all its guises, which together with the retail world is a constant focus
of refurbishing and renewal of sales and image spaces, to adapt to changing internatio-
nal tastes, market trends and the periodic necessities of brands, especially in the world
of fashion. Over time the icons of Foscarini have earned a special place within this
fi eld, chosen by architects, interior designers, retail managers, but also stylists and
