Dogmatic, \nrather harsh rules became synonymous \nwith Functionalism in design and archi-\ntecture. The most powerful one – ”form \nfollows function” – goes back to Louis \nSullivan. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe later \nadded his influential ”less is more,” and \nAdolf Loos even equated the use of \nornament with crime. So, was there any \nspace for fun in Functionalism? Perhaps \nnot, many certainly denied it. None-\ntheless, a small number of mid-century \ndesigners started to test the Function-\nalist rules and formal limitations by \ngiving their creations a clear playful and \nhumorous twist. \nYoung Verner Panton was one of those. \nBy the end of the 1950s, he presented \nhis famous Plus-linje collection, with \nthe Cone and Heart Cone Chair as its \ncentrepieces. He surprised the design \nworld with unusual shapes and new \nmaterials. He impressed with his fresh, \nplayful, and witty approach. He proved \nthat fun and function do not exclude \none another, and he promoted the idea \nthat fun should be understood as part \nof function. \nA couple of years later, an unusual com-\nmission gave him the opportunity to take  \nthe next step. The German furniture brand \nKill, little known but very ambitious,  \napproached Panton and asked if he \nwould be willing to create their exhibi-\ntion for the Cologne Furniture Fair,  \nan influential event in the industry. \nThe briefing was as short as it was \nchallenging: ”Make us famous!” And \nPanton delivered. He created – totally \nunconventional at that time – chairs \nand seating without legs, today known \nas the Easy Chair, Easy Sofa, and Easy \nPouf, and he invented the iconic Flying \nChairs. Kill’s stand was the sensation of \nthe fair in 1964. In Germany alone, more \nthan 300 newspapers reported about \nthe radical concept of the Flying Chairs. \nMany people thought that the designs \nwere over the top, too crazy. But they \nliked to look at them, and furthermore, \nthey liked to sit in them. Sitting, lying, \nor lounging on a Flying Chair, gave a \nnew perspective on a space because it \nwas fun – simply and undeniably. \n60 years after they first were presented, \nthe Flying Chairs and the Easy Series  \ndo not necessarily feel sensational.  \nYet, these pieces still stand out.
