Discendente da un’antica famiglia di vetrai, coltivò \nl’interesse per le arti plastiche attraverso la frequentazione \ndi laboratori di ceramisti, scultori e orafi veneziani, fino ad \napprodare alla Scuola Libera del Nudo. \nA partire dall’inizio degli anni Venti l’attività scultorea di \nMartinuzzi si intersecò con la pratica dell’arte vetraria, \ncompetenza che gli procurò l’incarico per la direzione \ndel Museo del Vetro di Murano (1922-1931). Nello stesso \ndecennio, il primo giugno 1925, fondò con Paolo Venini \nla V.S.M. Venini e C., ricoprendo, fino al 1932, il ruolo di \ndirettore artistico e partecipando a tre edizioni della \nBiennale di Venezia, tra cui quella del 1926, in occasione \ndella quale Venini presentò una grande fontana in vetro e un \ngrande lampadario a bracci da lui disegnati. Partecipò anche \nall’esposizione monzese del 1927 e del 1930, contribuendo \ncon le sue creazioni all’affermazione di un gusto di transizione \ndagli arts déco allo «stile Novecento», a lui più congeniale. \nGrazie all’amicizia con il poeta Gabriele D’Annunzio, realizzò \nsu commissione alcune opere tra cui coloratissimi frutti, \ncanestri montati su colonne luminose e lampadari per \nil Vittoriale degli Italiani. Al 1928 risale l’invenzione del \n«pulegoso», vetro caratterizzato dall’inclusione di migliaia \ndi bolle d’aria. Con questo materiale di tonalità verde scuro \nMartinuzzi realizzò un’anfora esposta alla Biennale del 1928, \nun grande vaso e una coppa per il Vittoriale. Nello stesso \nanno propose i suoi primi, spiritosi, animali di vetro, che \nvinsero il Grand Prix all’Esposicion Internacional de Arte \nModerno di Barcellona, accompagnati dai suoi raffinati vetri \nin forma di piante grasse. \nNel 1932 lasciò la Venini e fondò una propria azienda per \npoi dedicarsi esclusivamente alla scultura in marmo. Nel \nopoguerra Martinuzzi collaborò con diverse personalità \ndell’ambiente vetrario muranese, realizzando opere di \ngrande pregio, esprimendo la sua più genuina vocazione di \nscultore.\nMurano sculptor, designer, and entrepreneur, Napoleone \nMartinuzzi (1892-1977) got his training at the Academy of \nFine Arts in Venice. Heir to a long line of master glassmakers, \nhe cultivated his interest in the plastic arts by frequenting the \nworkshops of Venetian potters, sculptors, and goldsmiths, \nrising up as far as the School of Nude Figure Drawing.\nStarting in the early 1920s, Martinuzzi’s sculptoral activity \noverlapped into the practice of glassmaking, a skill that helped\nhim to secure the position of director of the Murano Museo \ndel Vetro (1922-1931). In that same decade, on 1 June 1925, \ntogether with Paolo Venini he founded V.S.M. (Vetri Soffiati \nMuranesi) Venini e C., filling, until 1932, the role of artistic \ndirector and participating in three Venice Biennali, including \nthe 1926 edition, when Venini presented a large glass fountain \nand a large chandelier the arms of which he designed.He also \ntook part in the Monza expositions of 1927 and 1930, with his\ncreations contributing to the rising popularity of an aesthetic \nthat was shifting from art deco to the “Novecento style”, which \nwas more to his liking. Thanks to his friendship with the poet \nGabriele D’Annunzio, he created some works on commission \nincluding brightly coloured fruits, baskets mounted on light\ncolumns, and chandeliers for the “Vittoriale degli Italiani”. The \ninvention of the “pulegoso” glass characterised by its thousands \nof tiny air bubbles, dates back to 1928 With this dark green \nmaterial, Martinuzzi created an amphora exhibited at the 1928 \nBiennale, a large vase and a cup for the Vittoriale.\nThat same year he proposed his first, droll glass animals, which \nwon the Grand Prix at the Esposicion Internacional de Arte \nModerno in Barcelona, accompanied by his refined pieces in \nthe form of succulent plants. In 1932 he left Venini to start his \nown company, and then devoted himself exclusively to the \nsculpting of marble.\nAfter the war, Martinuzzi partnered with various personalities \nof the Murano glass industry creating works of great value,\nexpressing his most genuine talent as a sculptor.\nGio Ponti (1891-1979), dopo aver conseguito la laurea al \nPolitecnico di Milano, aprì il suo primo studio nel 1927 con \nl’architetto Emilio Lancia. Parallelamente alla carriera in \ncampo architettonico, di cui il grattacielo Pirelli (1956-1960) \na Milano è forse la più celebre testimonianza, Ponti esordì \nnel ruolo di designer avviando, nel 1923, la collaborazione\ncon la manifattura ceramica Richard-Ginori, di cui rinnovò \nradicalmente la produzione, che lo portò a vincere il \nGrand Prix alla parigina Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.\nIl sodalizio tra Gio Ponti e Paolo Venini risale agli anni Venti, \nquando assieme diedero vita al gruppo del Labirinto che, \nformatosi a Milano attorno alla figura di Carla Visconti di \nModrone, unì industrie d’arte ed architetti (in quel momento \nBuzzi, Lancia, Morelli, Ponti). Nel 1927 il gruppo presentò i \npropri lavori alla Biennale delle Arti Decorative di Monza. Lo \nstesso Ponti, inoltre, ricorse alla vetreria Venini in occasione \ndell’allestimento della Rotonda alla XVI Biennale di Venezia\n(1928) per la realizzazione di quattro grandi specchi. Nel 1931 \negli iniziò la collaborazione con la “Luigi Fontana”, dall’anno \nsuccessivo “Fontana Arte”, di cui assumerà la direzione\nartistica. Esordì nel ruolo di progettista per Venini nel 1946, \nanno in cui disegnò le iconiche sospensioni Gio Ponti 99.80 e \nGio Ponti 99.81. Tra il ‘46 e il ‘53 progettò svariati oggetti, dalle \ncelebri bottiglie Crinoline, alle Morandiane, presentate alla \nmostra itinerante “Italy at Work”, ad alcuni originali servizi da \ntavola. Nel 1957 Venini espose alla Triennale le coloratissime \nvetrate ideate da Ponti, che si distinsero per il notevole \neffetto decorativo. Negli anni sessanta, assieme all’artista e \ndesigner Toni Zuccheri, Ponti disegnò per Venini le celebri \n“Vetrate Grosse”. While there, he \nintroduced radical innovations to the product line, leading to \nthe Grand Prix win at the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.\nThe partnership between Gio Ponti and Paolo Venini dates to \nthe 1920s, when they founded the Labirinto group, formed in \nMilan around the figure of Carla Visconti di Modrone, creating \na bridge between the art industries and architects (at that time, \nthe architects were Buzzi, Lancia, Morelli, Ponti). \nIn 1927 the group presented their works at the Monza Biennial \nInternational Exhibition of Decorative Arts. Ponti himself, \nmoreover, engaged the Venini glassworks for the construction \nof four large mirrors to be installed in the Rotonda at the XVI \nVenice Biennale (1928).\nIn 1931 he began his collaboration as artistic director with \n“Luigi Fontana”, known from the following year as “Fontana \nArte”. He made his debut as designer for Venini in 1946, the year \nin which he designed the iconic Gio Ponti 99.80 and Gio Ponti \n99.81 chandeliers. Between ‘46 and ‘53 he designed various \nobjects, from the famous Crinoline bottles, to the Morandiane, \npresented at the “Italy at Work” traveling exhibition, and some\ntableware. In 1957 Venini showed some brightly coloured \nVetrate (stained glass tiles) conceived by Ponti at the Triennale, \nwhich stood out for their remarkable decorative effect.
