is one thing that remains at the heart of The Rug
Company’s continued success and that is collaboration.
From the very first designer collections to creating rugs
with teams of skilled craftspeople in Nepal, co-founders
Suzanne and Christopher Sharp talk about some of their
favourite collaborative experiences.
Which were the most important collaborations in
the early days?
Christopher: For me, the biggest moment of
elation was when the Marni rugs first arrived.
They were bold and simple with fabulous colours
and they felt so different - as if there had never
been a rug like that before. Classic designs always
look good but, by nature, they tend to be less
challenging and that’s why they last. We used
to tell customers to hang on to the Marni rugs
because they were so of their moment; that’s
often what ends up making something important.
Suzanne: The Swirl rug we did with Paul Smith was
incredible, but we did think how many people can
cope with this much colour? Then it turned into
our bestseller. The key was that because there was
so much colour, you could put it with anything
and whatever you’d done with the curtains,
cushions or sofa, there was some link back to the
rug - that’s what made it work. Also, sometimes
a sample would come in and Chris would say,
let’s see how it shoots. You’d do the shoot and
suddenly it would come to life. People have to try
rugs in their homes to understand what they do to
a room, as it’s kind of amazing. Having them
in-situ makes a big difference.
How did your relationships with the
craftspeople develop?
Christopher: We worked with four wonderful
Tibetan families, each who made a different type
of rug - they were all brilliant. There was one
weaver who was so passionate about production
and so we asked him to work with us. He said I
don’t know if I can but contact me in a month.
Sure enough, a month later, he said we could
start. When we saw him next, we asked what
had happened and he told us he’d gone into the
mountains to talk to his Lama. They wanted us to make
a present for Barack and Michelle Obama for
their state visit. We only had three weeks, so we
couldn’t commission anything and had to make
do with what we already had, so we repurposed
an existing piece. There was a Union Jack design
that we created with Lucinda Chambers, that
had a heart with a dagger through it in the
middle, but number 10 said we can’t possibly
have the heart and dagger. Our Head of Sales
Sam’s mother is a fantastic textile restorer, so
she helped us unpick bits and re-sew them,
and we replaced them with an American eagle.
The time pressure added to the madness, but it
really was fabulous.
OUR COLLABORATORS
Adam Hunter
Alexander McQueen
Alexandra Champalimaud
Chihuly
Christopher Kane
David Rockwell
Diane Von Furstenberg
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby
Emily Todhunter
Farrow & Ball
Fiona Curran
Guo Pei
Helen Amy Murray
Jaime Gili
Kelly Behun
Kelly Wearstler
Lynda Murray
Martin Brudnizki
Martyn Lawrence Bullard
Mary Katrantzou
Michael Chan
Nicole Fuller
Paul Smith
Rodarte
Sam Turner
Sandra Nunnerley
Sarabande
Suzanne Sharp
Tim Gosling
Tom Dixon
Vivienne Westwood
Winch Design
",191
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.192.png","192
The Rug Company
DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
Following the launch of The Designer Collection in the year 2000,
we have continued to collaborate with a wide-reaching roster
of the world’s most celebrated and talented creatives from the
realms of fashion, art, architecture and product design, all of
whom share our passion for quality and craft.
To celebrate the success of the past two and a half decades, we
asked the designers to recall their greatest highlight or fondest
memory of working with The Rug Company, and to imagine if
they were one of our rugs, which would that be?
SIR PAUL SMITH
My most enduring memory
of working with The Rug
Company is the first time I
played with the yarns in my
hands, put the colours together
and built up the pattern. It was
such a rewarding process, and I
will never tire of seeing the final
three-dimensional quality.
If I were to be a rug it would
be Carnival. Stripes are
synonymous with me, but this
design pushes colour and stripe
to a new way of working.
MARTIN BRUDNIZKI
My greatest highlight was
finding out about my
collaboration. Having been a
long-time admirer of The Rug
Company it felt like I had been
anointed by the rug gods.
If I were to be a rug it would
be my own rug, Folly, that
combines a touch of classical
balustrade mixed with leopard
– traditional but playful.
DAVID ROCKWELL
The Lola rug has one of my
favourite backstories. We
explored abstract patterns
based on the brushstrokes
that my daughter Lola and I
decorated on ceramic vessels
in the studio of ceramic
artist Pascale Girardin. The
pieces feature a single,
broad blue brushstroke.
Girardin used this approach
to create hand-thrown sake
bottles for Rockwell Group’s
Nobu restaurant. The rug
composition expresses the
same spontaneous movement
and flow of colour that appear
on the vessels.
If I were a rug, I’d have to say
one of Paul Smith’s designs - the
Swirl! He is undeniably one of
the greats, and I respond to
the range of colours, the fluid
lines and the joyful approach. The highlight
for me has been working with
founders Christopher and
Suzanne Sharp who have given
me the opportunity to combine
their craftsmanship with my
design vision.
My favourite rug is the
Tracery, which is one of our
first collaborations and
really represents creativity
through textiles.
DIANE VON FURSTENBERG
I have rugs from the
collaboration all over my house.
They’re a reminder of what we
were able to create but also
set the tone for new memories,
and I love that there is always
a recent memory in which the
designs are present.
I can’t imagine being any other
rug than the Climbing Leopard,
which is embedded with things
I like - climbing and a desire
to be a leopard. It’s special
because we made it together.
MARY KATRANTZOU
I loved working alongside The
Rug Company’s in-house team,
taking their advice on what has
been successful for them in the
past and trying to filter those
values through our own design
signatures. The most incredible
part was seeing how accurately
my vision was translated into
the final collection. It really was
a dream process.
If I were a rug, I’d be Sunray
Pink, which draws inspiration
from the sun and its rays. I
always think of the sun as a
symbol of optimism, and it’s
arguably one of the strongest
symbols as it made life on earth
possible. Nothing unites and
gives us a sense of oneness in
the same way; it gives warmth
and light, and in many cultures
it symbolises female power. It’s
something that always guides
me in life.
ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD
My fondest memories of The
Rug Company date all the way
back to its inception. From
sourcing to selling to rug design and more, he
has been involved in almost every aspect of its
evolution since it was founded in 1997. “I was
working in restaurants in Portobello and Chris
and Suzanne Sharp were customers of mine,” he
recalls. “At the time it was just a little rug shop
at the top of Lots Road selling kilims and vintage
pieces; Chris was buying rugs in Malta and the
Middle East and Suzanne had a flower stall
outside. My mother is a textile restorer, so I
grew up around this kind of thing and I’d worked
for a rug dealer in America for a while. One day
they just offered me a job - and I’ve been here
ever since.”
Exceptional clients, the chance to work in some
of the world’s most extraordinary houses and
outstanding design collaborations are just some
of the reasons he has remained as tightly woven
into the company as the knots used to make its
iconic rugs. “I just love seeing people’s homes,
and we’re lucky to work in some remarkable
properties, both in London and around the
world,” he says. “Clients will pick out designs
and I’ll visit several times, then when the rug’s
made I’ll go back when it is ready. I don’t know
whether it’s because I’m very friendly, but you
do build relationships with customers. It’s never
as simple as here’s your rug – goodbye! These
rugs last forever, and a lot of people come back
who’ve had them for 10 or 15 years. They all say
the same thing - that living with the rug has
been amazing, which is wonderful to hear.”
From those original Lots Road roots, the
company expanded quickly, and they began
to design and make more modern rugs too.
“It was the year 2000 when we did the first
designer collection with people like Paul Smith
and Nina Campbell. At that time there were
no designer rug companies as such, so it was
quite revolutionary,” he continues. “There was
a gap in the market and we were phenomenally
successful - it was like a runaway train.
Traditionally, rug selling was quite mysterious
with negotiating and haggling and lots of cups
of tea. But we changed it into something more
accessible, without the smoke and mirrors.”

As the third ever member of the then tiny
team, his role spanned everything from laying
out advertisements (“I had no idea what I was
doing but they printed them in The World of
Interiors!”) to sourcing trips to Turkey, Morocco,
",222
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.223.png","223
Love Is The Rug
(Clockwise from left) Alexander McQueen Paris Showroom, custom project for David Collins Studio; Sam developing designs with Chris Sharp
at Holland Park in 2000; Zoom, one of Sam’s early designs
Pakistan, India and Nepal, where lodging in
weavers’ houses or bunking in backpacker
hostels was part of the adventure, and a liaison
with the Tibetan government in exile led to a
meeting with the Dalai Lama. The collaborations
have been a highlight too, as a roster of talented
artists and designers continue to stamp their
mark on the covetable rugs. “Paul Smith has
always been fantastic. He’ll say, ‘I’ve got some
more ideas’ and will turn up with 50 or 60 things
– he’s an incredible font of creativity,” says Sam.
“And Vivienne Westwood was amazing as well.
You see someone coming and you’d know they’re
a Westwood customer because they’re wearing
the clothes. People are absolutely passionate
about her, so then it’s not just a case of will this
rug work - it becomes an object that transcends
functional or decorative purpose. McQueen is
like that too.”
Sam’s own designs have also been part of the
ever-changing collection, and as the expert in
the production of entirely bespoke rugs, he’s
had some unusual requests. “People sometimes
“It’s never as simple as here’s
your rug – goodbye! These rugs
last forever, and a lot of people
come back who’ve had them
for 10 or 15 years.”
ask for rude things, which is funny, and we once
had a customer who had a competition among
their kids to create a design. They ended up with
a rug with a teddy called Woo Woo on it, but
actually, it was quite magnificent.”
His favourite projects, however, are where
he’s given completely free rein. “Occasionally
someone will say - just design me something.
When I was younger it was more difficult for
people to have faith in my ideas whereas now,
they take me more seriously,” he laughs. “But
when the rug is made and it’s a huge triumph,
I still get a kick out of that. The fact that the
customer is genuinely happy - that feeling is
just brilliant.”
",223
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.224.png",224
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.225.png",225
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.226.png","226
Design Rug Company
Size & Fitting
“A rug can be a great way to
anchor a room or delineate a
space in an open floor plan.”
Emma Elles-Hill
UK Showrooms Director
Speak to one of our experts now for
help with choosing your perfect rug
Choosing the perfect rug can be tricky. Here, our
design experts share their knowledge of rug sizing
and placement so that you can focus on the fun part
- selecting the perfect colour, pattern and style.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING
YOUR RUG SIZE
Positioning and balance
The size of a room does not necessarily determine
the size of a rug. Instead, think about where the
furniture is positioned. A well-proportioned rug
will unify separate elements and pull the room
together. Rugs can also be used to create balance
in a less symmetrical space and to zone open-
plan areas. Ask our experts for advice.
Doors and air vents
Sufficient clearance above a rug and below doors
is important, particularly when steel frames
and fire doors are in use. Also, consider the
positioning of practical features such as air vents.
Sockets and cables
Access to floor sockets for lamps and data
cables can be arranged and factored in as part
of an installation.
Size and comfort
Our rugs are wonderful to walk on, so for the full
underfoot experience and to maximise comfort,
make sure there is a generous amount of rug
around the edges of a bed or to the edges of
a corridor.
Borders and patterns
Rugs with borders tend to have a more traditional
feel and can help to define a space. Conversely,
patterns that run to the edge of a rug look more
contemporary and can make a room feel larger
and more relaxed.
",320
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.321.png","321
Help & Advice
DINING ROOM
Under a dining table, a rug should
be large enough so that you can
pull a chair out without the back
legs getting caught on the rug’s
edge. We recommend a size at
least 1.5m wider than the overall
length and width of the table.
DINING ROOM CIRCULAR
Custom designs often work
well with round tables. As with
square or rectangular tables,
we suggest allowing a depth
of at least 0.75m of extra rug
coverage from the edge of
the table.
CUSTOM SHAPES
If you have an unusually shaped
sofa, a bespoke piece of furniture
or an odd-shaped room, a custom
rug can be used to make a great
feature of it. Our design experts
can create a rug in any shape to
enhance specific elements.
LIVING ROOM A
A living room rug should be
generous enough so that the
furniture sits comfortably within
its perimeter. This will pull the
room together and make it feel
more cohesive. If a rug is too
small, it may appear lost and the
space can feel disjointed.
LIVING ROOM B
It is possible to visually expand a
smaller room by placing a rug so
its edges sit halfway under the
furniture. This works well with
contemporary rugs that have no
border, where the pattern runs
right to the edge.
LIVING ROOM C
To make an independent feature
of a rug, ensure its edges are
slightly longer and wider than
the dimensions of the furniture
that it sits next to. This will make
the space feel inviting, while
creating equilibrium.
BEDROOM A
In a bedroom, position the rug
underneath the bed, in front of
bedside tables and perpendicular
to the bed frame. This allows
for a soft layer to step out on to
when you get up. For balance,
aim to frame the end of the bed
with an equal amount of rug.
BEDROOM C
Bedside runners are another
solution in a bedroom. If you opt
for a pair of rugs, make sure
they are at least as wide as the
bedside tables and as long as
the bed.
BEDROOM B
An alternative option in a
bedroom is to place a rug at a
right angle to the frame at the
end of the bed. This works well if
you’re using a smaller piece.
HALLWAYS AND RUNNERS
In a hallway, it is often best to
order a custom length runner to
fit the space so there’s a precise
start and finish point. Runners
can also help zone walkways
in open-plan areas and can be
used to brighten hallways that
are lacking in light.
STAIRS
The construction and style of
stairs vary greatly, so with this in
mind we approach each project
individually. Our team can advise
on exactly what type of made-to-
measure floor covering will work
best for your staircase.
L-SHAPED SOFAS
An L-shaped sofa faces in two
directions, so make sure a rug
sits comfortably under both
sections and aligns in the same
way at each end. Ideally the sofa
should sit completely within the
edges of the rug, or at least
halfway under the L-shape.
A small rug inside the L can
appear stingy and may leave the
sofa looking isolated.
",321
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.322.png","322
The Rug Company
“Should you have a spill,
most liquids will bead up and
can easily be absorbed right
away with a plain paper towel
without issue. The quicker you
address the spill the better.”
Christopher Bugucki
Los Angeles Showroom Director
Speak to one of our experts now to get
more advice on how to care for your rug
CLEANING
To preserve the quality and appearance of your
rug, we recommend a regular cleaning programme.
Treat everyday spills by gently cleaning the
affected area with a solution of gentle soap and
warm water. Our experts can also advise on the
best way to restore or repair your rug should it
become damaged.
FLUFF
In the final stage of production, depending on
the technique used to weave the rug, the entire
surface may be trimmed by hand to achieve
the required pile depth. The first time the rug is
unrolled in its new location, a certain amount of
shedding can be expected as the excess fibres
become loose. In the first instance, vacuuming
offers a quick solution and fluff will naturally
lessen over time.
ABRASH
The term ‘Abrash’ comes from the Arabic term
for variation. While machine-made rugs can seem
flat, this much-desired textural appearance is
an exclusive feature of handknotted rugs and a
symbol of high-quality. Abrash also means yarn
does not take dye evenly, which creates a subtle
striped effect.
FADING
After prolonged exposure, sunlight will eventually
affect the colour of any rug. While we use the very
best dyes that are highly-resilient to fading, there
are no dyes that can completely avoid this natural
process. As such, our experts advise rotating rugs
from time to time to create an even fade.
Care & Cleaning
The Rug Company’s dedication to the use of sustainable,
durable materials and traditional production techniques
ensures that every rug will last a lifetime. Pieces of art to be
enjoyed for many years, our clients can purchase a rug safely
in the knowledge that it can always be cleaned or repaired
and never discarded.
LOOSE THREADS
Handloomed rugs must be sheared once complete
to create the desired pile height. Occasionally,
some longer threads escape cutting and become
embedded in the surface of the rug. Over time
they may work free and protrude, and when this
happens they should be cut carefully with sharp
scissors. With handknotted rugs, it is also possible
that an individual knot has missed the warp or
weft and comes undone, which also results in a
loose thread. If this happens, we suggest gently
pulling it out as each knot is tied separately so will
not unravel and the surrounding knots will fill any
gaps. If a thread is pulled and it resists, it should
be trimmed instead.
",322
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.323.png","323
Help & Advice
",323
"/media/images/b7/3608ad8c7547b28b2493e3d67c97d8-28dfc98e72.324.png","324
The Rug Company
Visit Us
Whether you’re searching for inspiration or looking for a
design to complete your interior, our showrooms provide
the perfect space to commence your journey and explore a
variety of shapes, colours, styles and materials.
Discover a wealth of inspiration at your nearest showroom
To visit The Rug Company’s showroom is to discover a world of inspiration.
