La Seconda \nGuerra Mondiale è finita da poco e l’Italia, \ncosì come gran parte del mondo, presenta \nancora ben visibili i segni della distruzione \ne dell’orrore che, purtroppo, rimarranno \nindimenticati per sempre. Allo stesso tempo, \nsi stava facendo largo la voglia di risorgere, di \ntornare alla normalità… anzi no: di cambiare, \nmigliorare, evolvere.\nNel 1951 negli Stati Uniti nasce il rock’n’roll con \nElvis Presley; nel 1952 Elisabetta II succede \nal padre Giorgio VI alla guida della monarchia \ninglese; nello stesso anno, in Italia, il Festival \ndi Sanremo viene trasmesso per la prima volta \nvia radio; due anni dopo la RAI radiotelevisione \nitaliana trasmette i primi programmi televisivi \nin bianco e nero. Il “modello americano” entra \nnelle case degli italiani, accompagnato dai miti \ndel cinema, della musica, ma anche dai rapidi \nprogressi della scienza e della tecnologia. \nL’Italia non sta a guardare, anzi: prende il via \nquello che, ancora oggi, è considerato il più \ngrande progresso produttivo, economico e \nsociale della sua Storia. “Miracolo economico \nitaliano”, “boom economico”, “età d’oro”, \n“favolosi anni Cinquanta”… chiamato in molti \nmodi, questo straordinario periodo coinvolge \nletteralmente tutti i settori e l’architettura non \nfa eccezione.\nGli anni Cinquanta vedono la straordinaria \nascesa di due fratelli, laureati in architettura \nal Politecnico di Milano e protagonisti in \ndiverse edizioni della Triennale di Milano, \nche ottengono una prestigiosa commessa: \nristrutturare l'intero palazzo della Camera \ndi Commercio di Milano, in parte distrutto \ndai bombardamenti. Achille e Pier Giacomo \nCastiglioni, questi i loro nomi, sviluppano \nun progetto che prevede, a fronte del \nmantenimento della facciata originale \nesistente, uscita in gran parte indenne, la \ncompleta ristrutturazione e riorganizzazione \ndei locali interni, tra cui la riprogettazione ex \nnovo dell’illuminazione attraverso differenti \nmodalità tecnologiche e nuove lampade adatte \na specifiche funzioni.\nNel 1957 i Castiglioni iniziano a progettare una \nlampada particolare per la sala della Giunta, \ncapace di unire la funzionalità con l’impatto \nemozionale. “Saliscendi” al tempo era poco più \nuna bozza ma la cosa più importante di tutte, \nl’idea, era stata messa nero su bianco. \nE quindi si poteva fare.\nLet’s take a step back in time, to the \nearly-1950s. The Second World War had \nrecently ended and Italy, along with much \nof the world, regrettably still showed clear \nsigns of the unforgettable destruction \nand horror. At the same time, there was a \nfermenting desire to rise up anew, to return \nto normality ... or rather, no – to change, to \nimprove, to evolve. \nBy the early-1950s, Rock ‘n’ Roll had taken \nhold in the United States and was soon to \nbe popularised with the emergence of Elvis \nPresley. In 1952, Elizabeth II succeeded her \nfather George VI at the helm of the English \nmonarchy. In the same year, in Italy, the \nSanremo Festival was broadcast for the first \ntime by radio. Two years later, the Italian \nradio and television station RAI broadcast \nthe first television programmes in black \nand white. The “American model” entered \nItalian homes, accompanied by the legends \nof cinema, music and even by the rapid \nprogression of science and technology. Italy \ndid not stand idly by. On the contrary. What \nis still today considered as the greatest \nproductive, economic and social progression \nin the country’s history was about to \ntake off. The “Italian economic miracle”, \n“economic boom”, “golden age”, “fabulous \nfifties” … however you refer to this period, \nthis extraordinary time literally involved all \nsectors. And architecture was no exception.\nIn 1952, two brothers – graduates in \narchitecture from the Milan Polytechnic \nUniversity and rising stars in their field, even \nbeing protagonists in various editions of \nthe prestigious Triennale di Milano – were \ncommissioned to renovate the entire Milan \nChamber of Commerce building, which \nhad been partially destroyed by bombings. \nAchille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni \nwere their names. The brothers went on \nto develop a project that foresaw, with a \nview to maintaining the existing original \nfaçade (which was largely unscathed), the \ncomplete restoration and reorganisation of \nthe internal rooms, including a redesign of \nthe lighting from scratch, availing of various \ntechnological methods and new lamps \nsuited to the specific functions\nIn 1957, the Castiglioni duo began designing \na unique light fixture for the Sala della \nGiunta, one that would be able to combine \nfunctionality with emotional impact. At that \ntime, the “Saliscendi” was little more than a \nsketch yet the most important detail of all – \nthe idea – had been put in black and white.  \nAnd so, it could be done.\nA story of Italian excellence\n",3,{"image":26,"text":27,"number":28},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F2a\u002F809ac3a224290bc050214e725667df-26de657ca5.4.png","L'evoluzione \ndi un’idea\nLa sala della Giunta venne concepita dai Castiglioni \ncon un pavimento di listoni di mogano, le pareti \nrivestite di panno nocciola a cui era appesa una \nraccolta di dipinti di Gaetano Previati mentre il \ngrande tavolo e le mensole erano in noce chiaro.\nAl di sopra del tavolo, i due fratelli compresero la \nnecessità di progettare una lampada il cui scopo \nfosse quello di concentrare la luce sul piano e, \nal tempo stesso, illuminare il resto della stanza. \nL’ampiezza del tavolo e della stanza suggerivano, \noltre ad un apparecchio luminoso di grandi \ndimensioni, l’utilizzo di due lampade, poiché una \nsoltanto non sarebbe stata sufficiente.\nI Castiglioni hanno un’intuizione, sviluppata e \nraffinata poi tra il 1957 e il 1958: una lampada \nmobile (sali-scendi appunto) capace di modificare \nl’intensità luminosa spostandosi attraverso un \nsistema di carrucole. Un sistema che permettesse \ndi muovere una fonte luminosa verso il basso e \nverso l’alto, regolando così l’intensità della luce sia \nsul piano del tavolo, sia nell’ambiente circostante.\nContemporaneamente - e qui viene il bello! - il \nmedesimo sistema consente di avvicinare o \nallontanare un disco riflettente posizionato \nsopra la fonte. La lampadina a incandescenza è \nracchiusa in un corpo lampada con entrambe le \nestremità aperte, per una doppia illuminazione, \ndiretta ed indiretta.\nDisco e corpo lampada scorrono in senso opposto \nlungo i cavi, avvicinandosi o allontanandosi. La \ndistanza tra i due elementi cambia con un semplice \ngesto, una mano che spinge o tira un piccolo \nocchiello posto all’estremità inferiore del corpo \nlampada: ecco la relazione tra oggetto e soggetto, \nsenza la quale niente di tutto ciò può compiersi.\nUn buon progetto non nasce dall'ambizione di lasciare \nun segno, il segno del designer, ma dalla volontà di \ninstaurare uno scambio anche piccolo con l'ignoto \npersonaggio che userà l'oggetto da noi progettato.\nCit. Achille Castiglioni\nThe Sala della Giunta was conceived by \nthe Castiglioni brothers as having a floor \nof mahogany boards and walls coated with \nhazelnut cloth, on which a collection of \npaintings by Gaetano Previati was hung. \nThe large table and shelves, rather, were in \nlight walnut.\nAbove the table, the two brothers \nunderstood the need to design a lamp \nwhose purpose was to concentrate the \nillumination overhead whilst lighting the rest \nof the room at the same time. In addition \nto a large-scale luminaire, the width of the \ntable and of the room itself called for two \nlamps, given that a single light source would \nnot have been sufficient.\nThe Castiglioni brothers had an intuition \nin developing and refining their concept \nbetween 1957 and 1958 to be a mobile \nlamp (one that went up and down, in fact) \ncapable of modifying the intensity of the \nlight by moving through a system of pulleys. \nThis system allowed a light source to be \nrepositioned upwards and downwards, \nthus adjusting the intensity of the light \nboth on the table and in the surrounding \nenvironment.\nAt the same time – and here comes the fun \npart! – the same system rendered it possible \nto position a reflecting disc above the light \nsource either closer or further away.\nAn incandescent light bulb was enclosed \nwithin a lamp body with both ends open to \noffer dual lighting, both direct and indirect.\nThe disc and lamp body would slide in \nopposite directions along the cables, \nmoving nearer or farther. E \nquindi, a dir poco ardito e visionario nel 1957! Per \nla realizzazione di un progetto tanto complesso, \ni fratelli Castiglioni si rivolsero all’azienda che più \ndi tutte, al tempo, poteva trasformare in realtà la \nloro geniale intuizione. Un’azienda milanese, come \nloro; nata nel 1946 dal coraggio di un visionario, \nuna persona capace di guardare oltre e di vedere \nciò che gli altri non vedono, come loro; una \nrealtà che ha partecipato con successo a diverse \nedizioni della Triennale, come loro, raccogliendo \nriconoscimenti in Italia e fuori dai confini nazionali, \ncome loro. Un brand in fortissima crescita che \ntrainava l’innovazione nel suo settore, come loro.\nEntra così in campo Stilnovo di Bruno Gatta.\nWhen the light source is brought close to \nthe table, the direct light is concentrated \non the underlying surface and indirect light \nilluminates the ceiling, with the disc – now \nfurther away – creating no obstacle.\nWhen the light source rises, moving away \nfrom the table, there is more light in the \nroom yet the lighting is dimmer. Thus, the \ndisc – now much closer – comes into play \nto reflect the indirect emission and increase \nthe amount of light diffused within the \nenvironment.\nA simply extraordinary concept even today, \nsome sixty-five years later. And therefore, \ndaring and visionary in 1957, to say the \nleast! For the realisation of such a complex \nproject, the Castiglioni brothers turned to a \ncompany that, at the time, could transform \ntheir brilliant intuition into reality more than \nany other enterprise. They turned to a fellow \nMilanese company. Founded in 1946 from \nthe courage of a visionary, a person able \nto gaze beyond and see what others could \nnot – just like them. This company had \nsuccessfully taken part in various editions \nof the Triennale – just like them – and had \ngarnered recognition in Italy and beyond the \nnational borders – just like them. A rapidly \ngrowing brand that was driving innovation \nwithin its sector – just like them.\nHence, Bruno Gatta’s Stilnovo entered the field.\n",6,{"image":38,"text":39,"number":40},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F2a\u002F809ac3a224290bc050214e725667df-26de657ca5.7.png","Realizzata in due esemplari in metallo laccato \nrosso rubino, nel 1958 Saliscendi di Achille e Pier \nGiacomo Castiglioni, prodotta da Stilnovo, fa bella \nmostra di sé all’inaugurazione della rinnovata \nCamera di Commercio di Milano, esattamente \nnella location per la quale è stata ideata dai due \ngeniali fratelli.\nPurtroppo, diverse problematiche impediranno \nla commercializzazione di questo complesso \napparecchio, mai più riprodotto per molto tempo.\nAll’inizio degli anni Duemila si rese necessaria una \nnuova ristrutturazione della Camera di Commercio \ndi Milano: duranti i lavori, le due lampade \nSaliscendi andarono purtroppo distrutte.\nQualche anno prima, nel 1993, una Stilnovo ormai \npiù volte passata di mano fin dal 1986 e con alcuni \ninfruttuosi tentativi di rilancio alle spalle, terminava \ndefinitivamente la produzione. \nNello stesso anno in cui la compagnia che aveva \ncreato dal nulla cessa di esistere, Bruno Gatta si \nspegne all’età di 79 anni.\nWith two samples made in ruby-red \nlacquered metal, the Saliscendi by Achille \nand Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, produced in \n1958 by Stilnovo, cut a fine figure at the \ninauguration of the renewed Chamber of \nCommerce of Milan, exactly in the location \nfor which it was designed by the two \nbrilliant brothers.\nUnfortunately, several impediments would \nprevent any further production of this \ncomplex device, never before reproduced ... \nuntil now.\nAt the beginning of the 2000s, a new \nrestructuring of the Milan Chamber \nof Commerce became necessary. \nUnfortunately, throughout the works, the \ntwo Saliscendi lamps were destroyed.\nStarting in 1986, Stilnovo went on to \nchange hands several times over, including \nsome unsuccessful attempts at relaunch. \nThen, in 1993, production finally came to an \nend. Walt Disney\nSi sa, le grandi idee non muoiono mai.\nNel 2019 Linea Light Group acquisisce il brand \nStilnovo, con l‘intento di riportarlo agli antichi \nsplendori attraverso un mix di nuove proposte, \ncapaci di percorrere lo stesso rivoluzionario solco \nche fece grande l’azienda milanese per decenni, \ne un parallelo lavoro di reingegnerizzazione dei \nmodelli più iconici volto ad attualizzarli per l’uso \nquotidiano, rimanendo sempre fedeli all’estetica \noriginaria del prodotto, con la fondamentale \ncollaborazione dei designer storici,  dei loro eredi \no fondazioni.\nPartendo da questo presupposto e lavorando \nfianco a fianco con gli eredi di Achille e Pier \nGiacomo Castiglioni, nasce pertanto l'idea di \nriprendere Saliscendi ed attualizzarla per l’abitare \ncontemporaneo!\nE così si torna al lavoro.\nHa inizio un elaborato processo di riprogettazione \ndella lampada, con l’obiettivo di renderla \nappetibile per il mercato odierno. Allo studio dei \ntecnici Stilnovo e degli eredi di Achille e Pier \nGiacomo Castiglioni c’erano essenzialmente due \nproblematiche, non di poco conto.\nAnzitutto, la riedizione di Saliscendi non poteva \nnon considerare l’evoluzione tecnologica avvenuta \nnegli anni, con le vecchie fonti luminose che \nvia via hanno lasciato sempre più il passo alle \nmaggiori performance e al risparmio energetico \ndei LED. Inoltre, la grandezza della lampada \ncome da progetto originale rendeva Saliscendi \nimponente e d’effetto, ma difficile da posizionare \nnegli ambienti di oggi. Sebbene queste \ncaratteristiche ne limitassero l’impiego, la sua \ngenialità, il suo fascino e l’emozione che riusciva a \nsuscitare non lasciavano spazio a dubbi: la strada \nera giusta e bisognava insistere, rivedendo tutte le \ndimensioni del progetto.\nTutti i componenti della lampada vengono quindi \ndimezzati rispetto all’originale, compreso il disco \nriflettente che passa da 120 a 60 cm. \nIn questo modo la sospensione trova finalmente \ncollocazione in tutti gli ambienti del vivere \ncontemporaneo, mantenendo intatti il fascino e la \nfunzionalità della “sorella” maggiore.\n",8,{"image":46,"text":47,"number":48},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F2a\u002F809ac3a224290bc050214e725667df-26de657ca5.9.png","You know, great ideas never die.\nIn 2019, Linea Light Group acquired \nthe Stilnovo brand, with the intention of \nrestoring its former glory through a mix \nof new offerings, capable of following the \nsame revolutionary path that made the \nMilanese company so great for decades. \nThis was to be flanked by a re-engineering \nof the more iconic models aimed at \nupdating them for everyday use, whilst \nremaining faithful to the original aesthetics \nof the product, with the fundamental \ncollaboration of historical designers, their \nheirs or foundations.\nStarting from this concept and working \nside-by-side with the heirs of Achille and \nPier Giacomo Castiglioni, a new idea was \nborn: to take up the Saliscendi and make it \ndown for contemporary living!\nAnd so ... back to the drawing board.\nThe elaborate process of redesigning the \nlamp began, with the aim of rendering it \nappealing to the market of today. \nIn the Stilnovo studio, the technicians \nand heirs of Achille and Pier Giacomo \nCastiglioni essentially faced two \nnot-insignificant problems.\nThe re-release of the Saliscendi had to \ntake into consideration the technological \nevolution to have taken place throughout \nthe years, with old light sources having \nincreasingly given way to more effective \nand energy-saving LEDs. Furthermore, \nthe size of the light fixture in the original \ndesign made the Saliscendi impressive \nand effective but difficult to fit into \ncontemporary spaces. Even if such \ncharacteristics limited its use, the light’s \ngenius, its charm and the thrill it was able \nto arouse left no room for doubt: this was \nthe right path to take so we had to persist, \nreviewing all the dimensions of the project.\nAll the components of the lamp were \ntherefore halved in size compared to the \noriginal, including the reflective disc that \nwent from 120 cm to 60 cm. Ora, i cavi di sostegno lungo i quali si \nmuovono le parti di Saliscendi fungono anche da \nalimentazione, per una maggior pulizia formale.\nLast but not least, due sorgenti LED garantiscono \nuna doppia emissione morbida e confortevole, \ndimmerabile anche tramite i più comuni device \ntecnologici grazie al protocollo DALI.\nOggi batte forte il cuore della “nuova” Saliscendi. \nAttualizzata, sempre magnifica, tecnologicamente \nall’avanguardia e in tre diverse colorazioni: \nall’originale rosso rubino si affiancano il verde \nprato ed il bianco-grigio.\nOra, finalmente, possiamo gridare al mondo: \nbentornata Saliscendi!\nThe pulley system has been completely revised, achieving a fluidity \nand silence in the movements that are nothing short of surprising. \nThe coiled power cord has been eliminated.
