This allows the upholstery materials to move freely, enabling the
mattress to adapt to the contours of the body with point elasticity. The
cover cannot shift.
‘Breaking in’ your SCHRAMM mattress
SCHRAMM mattresses are made up of several layers of material, which
are padded in their natural form without compression or chemical rein-
forcement. The new mattress will adapt to your body shape and weight
over the first few weeks to months. The mattress must first be ‘broken in’,
similar to new shoes need to be broken in. After the ‘breaking-in’ period,
sleeping marks will become visible as signs of use in the main pressure
areas.
The mattress cover must stretch so that the mattress can adapt even
better to the shape of the body. Cotton and sheep‘s wool in their natural
form compress to some extent, and all foamed materials become softer
during use, especially in the main load zones, in the first few months ac-
cording to a physical law. This is not a defect. This is a natural process
that we take into account during production by using the highest quality
materials and complex handcrafting techniques. Only at the end of the
acclimatisation period is the maximum comfort of the mattress achieved.
The mattress now shows its natural signs of use. After the ‘acclimati-
sation phase’, SCHRAMM mattresses remain virtually unchanged over
many years of use and, thanks to the top quality of their materials and
workmanship, are subject to only the slightest possible wear and tear.
→ Natural usage characteristics
Camel hair topper
Camels experience a wide range of climatic conditions, from freezing
temperatures to very hot degrees above zero. Camel hair is therefore
known for its temperature-regulating properties, cooling in summer and
warming in winter. The hair is neither shorn nor combed out, but falls out
naturally in tufts in spring and is then processed into fluffy wool. Due to
its low wool grease content (lanolin), camel hair is also particularly suita-
ble for allergy sufferers.
Cashmere
Cashmere is a valuable wool that is obtained only once a year by combing
or plucking the cashmere goat native to the Central Asian highlands. Lignin is responsible
for the compressive strength and durability of plant fibres. This makes
the fibres resistant and creates very open and ventilated structures.
Cold foam
Cold foam is one of the most valuable foam qualities. It belongs to the
polyether foams, which, in contrast to standard foams, achieve the high-
est quality values as HR foam (high resilient).
Compression hardness
Compression hardness refers to the pressure required to compress a
foam by 40 % of its original height (DIN 53577). The cell wall is influ-
enced by the addition of hardeners, which in turn significantly determi-
nes the compression hardness. In mattress manufacturing, compression
hardness is the restoring force of a cushioning material at a defined
impression depth.
Compression hardness loss
Even the best materials become softer when subjected to constant me-
chanical stress. As the pelvic/buttock area is the heaviest part of the
body, the maximum compression hardness loss is reached earlier there
than in areas subject to less stress. A hardness loss of approx. 20 % can
be found in the best qualities used by SCHRAMM. A significantly higher
loss of compression hardness is common, with a considerable portion
occurring in the first weeks and months of use. We take this loss into ac-
count from the outset, which means that the mattress is firmer before its
first use and adapts to the body as it is broken in. → Breaking in
Cylinder spring
SCHRAMM uses oven-tempered cylinder springs in various wire thick-
nesses in its SCHRAMM pocket spring mattresses GRAND CRU N°1,
DIVINA, MYTHOS, ANTHEA and HEAVEN, and induction-tempered
cylinder springs in its EMOTION and EMOTION LUXE mattresses, in
accordance with specific requirements and taking into account body
weight and weight distribution.
D
H
I
J
Density (RG)
In mattresses, the density of the foam used is a quality feature. Latex (rubber) is an elastic raw material extracted from the sap
of the rubber tree. SCHRAMM latex is produced using the complex Ta-
lalay process. Only with this process is the mould placed under vacuum
after filling, which ensures optimal distribution of the material. At appro-
ximately minus 50 °C, the smallest air particles are distributed evenly.
Vulcanisation is then initiated at approximately 105 °C. Finally, the latex
is washed to remove any substances that may cause allergies. The result
is a homogeneous, open-pored latex with offset perforation, which offers
unrivalled lying and ventilation properties (= moisture transport). Its out-
standing point elasticity is unmatched. The processing of Talalay latex
is far more energy-efficient than that of comparable synthetic materials.
In addition, its supplier, the tropical rubber tree, binds the greenhouse
gas CO2 like all plants. They are stretched over
the mattress for hygienic protection. We recommend our molton fitted
sheet. It is washable at up to 60 °C and suitable for tumble drying.
Mattress fitted sheets
Fitted sheets provide the mattress with initial hygienic protection. Com-
plete protection of the mattress, for example with airtight and waterproof
synthetic materials, is not desirable for reasons of a functioning bed
climate with air circulation and moisture transport. The highly flexible
SCHRAMM mattress must not be constricted by fitted sheets that are too
small. Otherwise, it will become narrower and, above all, shorter, and its
corners will become ‘round’. This always happens when the covers are
too small or have become too small due to washing. A cover that is too
small causes the highly flexible SCHRAMM mattress to shrink, which can
result in a ‘visitor‘s gap’.
Even a single fitted sheet that is too small among many used can cause
the mattress to shrink. How can I restore a mattress to its original size?
Grasp the mattress at the foot end by the sturdy fabric handles and
shake it briefly and vigorously in a ‘wave-like’ motion towards the head
end. Repeat this process. This will allow the mattress to return to its origi-
nal size as far as possible. This is why the fitted sheets in the SCHRAMM
HOME COLLECTION are always generously sized.
Motorised adjustment
SCHRAMM beds can be equipped with motorised adjustable base mat-
tresses. In
SCHRAMM pocket spring core mattresses, cylinder springs are indivi-
dually sewn into pockets. Each individual spring is free-standing without
being connected to the neighbouring springs. This free suspension sys-
tem is used to produce highly point-elastic and supple upholstery. Based
on the knowledge that, in terms of body support and pressure equalisati-
on, a mattress can only offer optimum sleeping comfort if it is tailored to
the body weight and weight distribution of the user, SCHRAMM pocket
spring mattresses are manufactured in various designs and versions.
Pocket spring fabric
Our springs are individually sewn into nettle pockets, which supports the
excellent air circulation and removal of body moisture in the SCHRAMM
sleep system.
Recycled fabric
This fabric consists of 80 % recycled cotton and 20 % recycled polyes-
ter. Thanks to the resource-saving production process, the recycled ma-
terial is given a new purpose. Recycled fabrics are a responsible choice
in terms of sustainability and the environment.
Removable mattress covers
The double jersey fabric, quilted with polyester filling, is washable at
30 °C and can be cleaned. It can be used with the MYTHOS mattress
and the Lotus Light mattress topper.
• Gentle wash at 30 °C or delicate wash programme without pre-wash.
• Use a small amount of detergent.
• Spin gently – reduce spin speed!
• While still damp, pull the surface into shape lengthwise and crosswise.
• Smooth out firmly all around along the edging tape. → Cleaning and
care symbols
• Do not tumble dry!
Natural usage characteristics of the SCHRAMM mattress
The upholstery materials used in SCHRAMM mattresses are processed
in their natural form, without being compressed using chemical additi-
ves. Natural materials such as sheep‘s wool, cotton and synthetic wad-
ding become firmer during the first few weeks of use due to the pressure
and heat of the body, particularly in the areas of the main lying zones
where the body protrudes, such as the shoulders, pelvis and buttocks.
The compaction of the materials and the stretching of the mattress cover,
visible as slight wrinkling on the mattress, are natural signs of use and
do not constitute a quality defect. On the contrary, the wrinkling – we
also call it sleep marks – is a sign of quality for a highly flexible mattress
that stretches to fit the shape of the body (stick measure tape measure).
These natural signs of wear are often mistakenly referred to as defects,
but they are actually the result of the mattress naturally adapting to the
user. → Breaking in
Odour, new smell
Due to the inherent odour of the materials and the packaging, it is not
possible to manufacture and deliver a completely odourless new pro-
duct. However, the inherent odour of freshly processed upholstery ma-
terials dissipates after only a short period of use thanks to the excellent
air circulation provided by the SCHRAMM two-mattress system. A water-
soluble adhesive consisting of water and latex is used for the adhesive
bonds in SCHRAMM mattresses, which are reduced to an absolute mi-
nimum.
Pilling
Pilling causes small fibre nodules to form on the textile surface of the
mattress. SCHRAMM Ticking is made with tightly twisted, long-staple
cotton with very well-bound warp and weft threads and a high fabric
density. Fitted sheets are often made from soft-twisted yarns with gene-
rally short-staple fibres and sometimes contain synthetic fibres, with the
aim of being particularly soft and skin-friendly.
Depending on the intensity of the sleeper‘s movements, soft, expo-
sed fibres from the fitted sheet stick to the ticking fabric due to friction
between the ticking and the fitted sheet. The resulting entanglement
leads to pilling, whereby the foreign fibres stick to the surface of the
ticking. Due to the deposits on the mattress, the mattress cover is mis-
takenly considered to be defective. Fine natural materials such as wool,
camel hair, cashmere or alpaca, with their short and soft fibres, are more
susceptible to lint and pilling. This is not a quality defect, but is due to the
naturalness and softness of the material. The functionality of the fabric
is not impaired. The gentlest method of removing unsightly but natural
pilling is to use a standard wool shaver, lint roller or special comb.
O
P
",10
"/media/images/9b/8020424335e6f662bd3c9060d44041-291ba35d62.11.png","SCHRAMM 21
20
Sleeping climate
On average, humans lose half a litre of moisture per night while slee-
ping. This is why the ventilation of the mattress plays an important role.
To create the best bed climate, SCHRAMM uses a complex stitching
technique to connect the upholstery materials. At SCHRAMM, air can
circulate freely through the lower and upper mattresses – the basis for
restful sleep.
Spring quality
1. Thermal furnace tempering – the memory of the SCHRAMM springs
Tempering means making the steel strong and tough. High strength re-
sults in high resistance to plastic deformation and breakage, prevents
loss of resilience and ensures lasting elasticity. To achieve this, the steel
must be slowly heated to very high temperatures and then slowly cooled
again. The furnace heat tempering is a quality maturing process – si-
milar to that used for high-quality wine. Unique worldwide – only from
SCHRAMM.
2. Demagnetisation
The thermal furnace tempering of the springs at approximately 300 °C
causes the material to lose its magnetic effect, but the steel retains its
natural properties. In addition, our manufactured springs are copper-
plated.
3. Specially woven pocket spring core fabric
A pocket spring core fabric made of nettle fabric provides excellent sup-
port for the removal of body moisture from the mattress and ensures
optimum air circulation.
4. ‘Heart muscle’ pocket spring core strand
With high-quality springs, exclusive upholstery materials and distinctive,
handcrafted manufacturing methods, SCHRAMM products can be indi-
vidually tailored to the user. We also call our handmade pocket spring
core the ‘heart muscle’.
5. Different spring strengths and formulations (degrees of hardness)
Integrated lengthwise into the SCHRAMM mattress, the different springs
enable optimal pressure equalisation when lying down. The combination
of different springs is available in different formulations. They ensure that
the mattress responds optimally to the specific, individual requirements of
customers. This means more pressure equalisation, less movement, more
comfortable lying, peaceful sleep – pure relaxation.
S.C.A. – Secondary Contour Adjustment (patented)
Personalised sleeping comfort. Depending on individual body shape,
such as narrow or broad shoulders, pronounced or less pronounced
contours of the hips and pelvis, or during pregnancy, the under-mattress
can be raised independently and continuously by up to 2 cm and lowe-
red by up to 2 cm in the shoulder and pelvic areas. Through noticeable
optimisation – comparable to the adjustment options of a comfort seat
in a car – this technology creates a ‘tailor-made suit for the bedroom’.
Once you have made your purchase decision, S.C.A. allows you to fine-
tune and adjust the mattress to your desired sleeping position, even
after physical changes. This fine adjustment, which can be changed at
any time, in combination with the correct spring force formula of the up-
per mattress, defines the optimal lying position for unrestricted sleeping
comfort.
Shading effect
Shading effects, also known as ‘writing’, occur on velour with soft, vel-
vety surfaces during use. The finer and shinier the velour, the more vib-
rant it appears. The top layer (pile layer), which consists of many small
threads, changes colour depending on how the light hits the areas and in
which direction or angle the pile threads are laid. Sometimes permanent
shades can also be seen, known as the shading effect. Plain-coloured
velours are most prone to this effect.
Sheep‘s wool
Sheep‘s wool is an elastic, natural animal fibre and is naturally flame-
retardant. Pure, natural sheep‘s wool is used for the mattress uphols-
tery cover. Sheep‘s wool comes from live sheep and is not chemically
treated. It is very comfortable because the wool fibres adapt to the bed
temperature due to their large volume. It has a warming effect in cold
weather and a cooling effect in warm weather. SCHRAMM uses the high-
est quality sheep‘s wool, known as “Plein Air”. Plein Air wool is obtained
from French free-range sheep. This also ensures that the wool is free
from pesticides. The sheep live in their natural environment, always in
the fresh air. This makes the wool much stronger because it has to with-
stand wind and weather. The resulting more stable wool has a stronger
resilience and is less prone to compression.
Silk
Silk is a fibre obtained exclusively from the cocoons of silk-spinning in-
sects. Silk has a noble sheen, is very soft, skin-friendly, light and supp-
le. The longer spring travel ensures that
every movement is absorbed particularly gently.
Toppers / mattress covers
SCHRAMM mattress covers can significantly increase individual well-
being and provide additional hygienic protection for the mattress. Our
mattress covers are not washable (except Lotus Light).
Transporting the SCHRAMM mattress
Use the handles to lift, turn or carry the mattress. If you grab the mattress
by the upholstered surface and pull it towards the centre of the mattress,
the sheep‘s wool, which is not glued to the upholstery for functional rea-
sons, may shift under the cover and form unsightly bulges.
Turning the SCHRAMM mattress
During the first year, turn your new mattress lengthwise approximately
once a month to ensure that the weight of your body is distributed evenly.
This allows both sides of the mattress to be used equally. After that, the
mattress should be turned at least four to six times a year. → Breaking in
→ Compression hardness loss
Ticking
Ticking is one of the most durable mattress cover fabrics. The SCHRAMM
MYTHOS mattress is covered with a ticking made of 63 % viscose and
37 % cotton. The DIVINA mattress has a ticking made of 100 % viscose,
a fine, very soft and dense fabric. The ticking fabric on the GRAND CRU
N°1 mattress is made of 87 % cotton and 13 % silk. The ticking fabric
on the EMOTION, EMOTION LUXE and HEAVEN mattresses is made
of 62 % cotton and 38 % viscose, a very fine yet dense fabric. Under-
mattresses have a ticking made of 100 % cotton. SCHRAMM tickings are
licensed according to ‘STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®’. The ticking of
the ANTHEA natural mattress is made of 59 % hemp from certified orga-
nic cultivation and 41 % cotton from certified organic cultivation.

T
Three-mattress system of the GRAND CRU product line
",13
"/media/images/9b/8020424335e6f662bd3c9060d44041-291ba35d62.14.png","SCHRAMM 27
26
3
4
1
1
2
Two-mattress system
Breathable upholstery materials such as silk, linen, sheep‘s wool,
cotton, cashmere and Talalay latex are free from harmful substan-
ces and crafted in such a way that air can circulate freely through
all layers.
The flexible upper mattress
It is designed to adapt perfectly to any
body shape. Thanks to the combination
of different spring strengths along its
entire length, the mattress responds to
your individual body measurements and
sleeping habits. It supports the body
precisely and gently balances out pres-
sure. This eliminates the unconscious
search for new lying positions.
The stable lower mattress
The base of a SCHRAMM bed is not a con-
ventional slatted frame, but a spring-loaded
lower mattress (box spring). In combination
with the flexible upper mattress, the lower
mattress gently and evenly absorbs every
body movement. Only this combination en-
sures optimal functionality, bed climate and
durability.
Optimal sleeping climate
The handcrafted stitching fixes the natu-
rally processed upholstery materials wi-
thout gluing, thus ensuring dimensional
stability and excellent breathability. In
combination with the spring construc-
tion, this allows free air circulation, which
gives the high-quality system its optimal
sleeping climate.
Pocket springs
At the heart of SCHRAMM‘s handmade mattres-
ses are permanently elastic steel springs that
are oven-tempered after winding. This special
process has a demagnetising effect and ma-
kes the cylinder springs resistant to fatigue and
overload. This ensures that the springs always
return reliably to their original position. The cy-
linder springs are individually sewn by hand into
their own pockets made of muslin. The finer and shinier the velour, the more vib-
rant it appears. The top layer (pile layer), which consists of many small
threads, changes colour depending on how the light hits the area and
the direction / angle of the pile threads. Sometimes permanent shading
can be seen, known as the shading effect. Plain-coloured velours are
most prone to this effect.
Wood-based materials
We source our wood from sustainable forestry. Naturally grown wood
is not a synthetic material. Each trunk differs in colour and structure,
which can lead to variations. The natural or dyed woods are protected
with a colourless silk matt varnish or a natural wood effect varnish, Na-
turo matt. The wood surface may darken over time depending on the
lighting conditions. Natural variations and darkening processes do not
constitute grounds for complaint.
Zipper
Zippers are available for some mattresses, which can be used to create
a large, flat sleeping surface – this prevents the formation of a so-called
‘visitor‘s gap’.
U
Typical product characteristics
Under-mattress / two-mattress system
The upholstered SCHRAMM under-mattress forms the basis of the bed.
It is a stable, elastic base that supports the sensitive upper mattress in
its effect. Added to this are the excellent climate properties of the two-
mattress system. Air can circulate freely vertically and horizontally, remo-
ving moisture. Only the combination of SCHRAMM under-mattress and
top mattress provides the best possible relaxation. It is not hard resis-
tance, but harmonious adaptation that makes the two-mattress system
a perfect unit. Please note: Always combine a SCHRAMM top mattress
with a SCHRAMM under-mattress. Only then can the functions, bed cli-
mate and durability be optimally guaranteed.
Use of the SCHRAMM mattress across its entire width
Mattresses should be used across their entire width, especially in the
first few weeks and months, so that the upholstery materials can adapt
across the full width of the bed. This is because materials stretch slight-
ly, cotton and sheep‘s wool compress, and foam materials – even the
highest quality ones – become noticeably softer in the first few weeks
and months due to the laws of physics.
