Così il mio percorso con Maxalto inizia idealmente, a metà degli anni 90,  \ncon una visione: un’immaginaria scena teatrale di ambiente borghese, di ispirazione francese, dove nascono i primi \nprodotti in cui ho cercato di combinare piacere estetico e funzionale. Per rendere realtà questo scenario sono stati \nimportanti alcuni punti di riferimento: l’immaginario di progettisti come Jean Michel Frank, che ingentiliscono  \nle geometrie talvolta costrittive del Modernismo; la dedizione del produttore e dei suoi realizzatori a raggiungere  \nla massima qualità; il filtro dello sguardo di chi rappresenta questi oggetti nella comunicazione. Dopo tanti anni  \ndi progetto, mi pare si sia infine creato un universo di prodotti tra loro coerenti, fedeli a quell’idea iniziale di ambiente,  \nche si può oggi considerare anche una scommessa vinta. Non avrei potuto desiderare di meglio  \ncome compimento di questo percorso iniziato 25 anni fa.\nWhen you embark on a design program to create not only objects, but an all-encompassing idea of interiors, \nthe final goal is not always clear. The trick is to gradually bring into focus what at first seems vague, and this is done by \npatiently working on the shapes, structures and materials. My design journey with Maxalto began in the mid-1990s  \nwith a vision: an imaginary theatrical setting for a bourgeois interior of French inspiration, composed of products that \nwould combine aesthetic pleasure with functional duty. Important reference points helped turn this scenario into \n reality – imaginative designers from the past like Jean-Michel Frank, who softened the sometimes constrictive geometry \nof modernism; the dedication of the manufacturer and its technicians to obtain the most elevated quality; \nand the trained eye of the communication specialists who present these objects to the people. After many years of work, \nmy impression is that we have created a universe of cohesive products true to the initial concept of building a specific \ntype of environment, which is to say we have won the wager. Certainly it was not, is not, an easy exercise, seeing how \neven the most rigorous designer can fall prey to the suggestions \ngiven by an era. Gone are the fantasy visions of futuristic interiors \nfrom the 1960s and ‘70s; the disquieting and occasionally \ngrim eclecticism of 1980s postmodernism; the self-referential \nexperiments of the 1990s. Of the products born during those \ndecades, bitter few have stood up to the passing of the years, \nmaking way for furniture and products that have proven to be \ntimeless. The secret of the long life given to the pieces conceived \nby Citterio, which have survived many years of research and \nproduction unscathed, lies in an initial negation followed by an \naffirmation, plus a subtle balance between the two. There is a \ndenial of the need to renew products superficially. There is a \nconfirmation of the possibility to build an abundant range of \nproducts with a wealth of variations on the themes of comfort, \nconviviality, interiors and furniture. This offers a domestic place \nthat is at once private and public, where you can socialise in \nrooms of different types with people of affinitive aesthetic tastes \nand lifestyles. The tables, chairs, armchairs, couches, beds and \ncabinets shown here are indubitably functional, but all together \nthey create many places to live in, the rooms of an ideal house \nwhere you always return to find confirmation of having chosen \nwell, having confided in the shared vision of a designer and a \nmanufacturer who have not forgotten their roots. The know-\nhow of a long artisanal tradition, the perspicacity to understand \nhow home living is evolving, what things are destined to last, \nand what needs to change – all these remain in the DNA of \nthe entire collection. Just like the magic powers that allow a \nfantastic creature to walk through fire unharmed, Maxalto has \nthe capacity to constantly regenerate, rising to the challenge of \ntests big and small that time and fate never fail to mete out.\nSe pensiamo al presente come quello che è stato un tempo il \nnostro futuro, o almeno come lo abbiamo immaginato, si può \ncapire l’importanza per Maxalto della visione a lungo termine \navuta da Antonio Citterio nel disegnare una produzione che \nnon ha mai cercato di inseguire mode o tendenze. Certamente \nnon si è trattato, non si tratta di un facile esercizio, perché anche \nal designer più coerente può capitare di cedere alle suggestioni \ndi un’epoca. Sono passate le fantastiche visioni di ambienti \nfuturibili degli anni 60\u002F70, l’eclettismo inquietante e un po’ \ncupo del postmoderno anni 80, la sperimentazione a volte fine \na sé stessa degli anni 90: ma dei prodotti che in quei decenni \nsono nati ben pochi hanno resistito al tempo, per lasciare \ninvece il posto a mobili e oggetti che provano di saper resistere \nal passare degli anni. Così anche il segreto della lunga vita di \nquesti pezzi immaginati da Citterio, che hanno attraversato \nindenni molti anni di ricerca e produzione, sta prima in una \nnegazione, poi in un’affermazione, in sottile equilibrio tra loro. \nSi nega la necessità di rinnovare i prodotti solo superficialmente, \nma si afferma la possibilità di creare un catalogo ricco, anche \nricchissimo di variazioni sui temi del comfort, della convivialità, \ndell’interno e dell’arredo come luogo domestico privato e al \ntempo stesso pubblico: dove socializzare con persone affini \nper senso estetico e per modo di vita, in ambienti diversi e con \ndiverse tipologie. Tavoli, sedie, poltrone, divani, letti, contenitori \nqui raccontati sono certamente oggetti funzionali, ma creano \ntutti insieme altrettanti luoghi per abitare, “stanze” di una casa \nideale, dove tornare sempre per trovare la conferma di aver \nfatto la scelta giusta, confidando nella visione di un progettista \ne di un’industria che non hanno mai dimenticato le loro radici. \nIl saper fare di una lunga tradizione artigiana, l’intelligenza di \ncapire l’evoluzione dell’abitare, di cosa è destinato a durare e \ndi cosa dovrà necessariamente cambiare, restano nel DNA di \ntutta questa collezione. Come i poteri magici che danno a un \nanimale fantastico la forza di passare attraverso il fuoco senza \nbruciarsi, vale per Maxalto soprattutto la capacità di rigenerarsi \ncostantemente, nel confronto con le grandi e piccole prove che \nil tempo e il fato riservano sempre, alle cose come alle persone.\nTHE SPACE AND TIME OF INHABITING ARE INTIMATELY LINKED  \nTO THE PROMISE THAT FURNITURE AND OBJECTS LAST THE LONGEST TIME \nPOSSIBLE, IN ORDER FOR THEIR EXISTENCE TO FORM A COMPANIONSHIP  \nFOR THE PEOPLE WHO USE THEM. The company, \nwhose primary material was wood, specialised in modern \nfurniture distinguished by refined artisanal execution. Perhaps \nBusnelli did not imagine back then that his product range \nwould be continuously renewed for another 45 years, yet \nthis is exactly what happened when Citterio picked up the \nbaton from the Scarpas and commenced the contemporary \nreconstruction of a small encyclopaedia of furniture. Guided \nby a bias for bourgeois interiors furnished with design from the \nmodern movement, he favoured that particular French version \nwhere the spare pieces by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand \nstand close to the gentle shapes and precious materials of  \nJean-Michel Frank. Having understood and assimilated the \nteachings of these masters, Citterio mined Maxalto as a design \nlaboratory for research and the production of neoclassic modern \npieces. Neoclassic because they were filtered in form and finish \nthrough the contemporary eye of an Italian architect; and modern \nbecause they are comfortable items that look to the future of \nthe home. The collection stems from the logical, well-grounded \ndevelopment of an idea of a homogeneous environment where \nfurniture and objects can be added and layered fluidly. First in the \ndesigner’s ideation, and then in the reality of production, fidelity \nto the Maxalto DNA was maintained while refreshing it with new \nmaterials and inventions. Those who will browse the prodigious \npages that follow – an almost cinematographic representation of \nthe combinations and semantics of a wide universe of products \n– will soon be impressed by a certain intrinsic quality, namely \nthe constant successful endeavour to create a landscape of \ninnovative furniture. They will immediately perceive the quality \nof construction, before they have even touched or used the pieces. \nIt is intuited rapidly, just by seeing the photographs, how great \nthe content of skilled craftsmanship is, how sartorial the finishing \nis. These models were born to be produced serially, responding \nto all the strict criteria and durability standards that a high-end \nproducer has in place. Yet for the exquisite quality of details from \nlarge to tiny, all informed by the venerable tradition of craft, each \npiece is unique. They are equal to one another, but different. They \nrepresent the personalisation of the indoor environment that was \nonce the privilege of cultured and even aristocratic society. His \nfondness for this reference led Citterio to satisfy the desire of \nmany people: to live comfortably with furniture and accessories \nthat express one’s very own individual taste.\nQuando nel 1975 Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, fondatore di B&B \nItalia, con Afra e Tobia Scarpa inventa Maxalto - un’impresa \ncapace di produrre mobili moderni attraverso una raffinata \nesecuzione artigiana, avendo come prima materia il legno - forse \nnon immagina che il suo catalogo si rinnoverà in continuazione \nper altri 45 anni. Eppure è quello che accade con Antonio \nCitterio, che nel 1995 raccoglie il testimone di progettista \ndagli Scarpa e si lancia nella sua ricostruzione contemporanea \ndi una piccola “enciclopedia dell’arredamento”. Lo guida \nl’intuizione di un genere di ambiente borghese affine ai pezzi \ndi design del Movimento Moderno: specialmente declinati in \nquella particolare versione di cultura francese, dove i mobili \nessenziali di Le Corbusier \u002F Charlotte Perriand stanno vicino \nalle forme gentili e ai preziosi materiali di Jean Michel Frank. \nCompresa e assimilata la lezione di quei Maestri, Maxalto \ndiventa per Citterio il laboratorio produttivo dove mettere \nin atto la ricerca e la produzione di una collezione di “neo-\nclassici moderni”. Neo-classici perché filtrati nelle forme e nelle \nfiniture attraverso lo sguardo contemporaneo di un architetto \nitaliano, moderni perché intendono essere ancora soluzioni \nper il comfort, che però guardano al futuro della casa come \nsviluppo logico e coerente di un’idea di ambiente omogeneo e \ncoerente: dove mobili e oggetti si aggiungono fluidamente uno \nall’altro, prima nell’ideario del progettista e poi nella realtà della \nproduzione, mantenendo coerenza e fedeltà al DNA Maxalto, \nrigenerato attraverso nuovi materiali e invenzioni progettuali. \nPer questo chi si troverà a scorrere le ricche pagine che seguono \ne rappresentano, quasi cinematograficamente, ambientazioni e \nsignificati di un intero universo di prodotti sarà presto colpito \nda una loro qualità intrinseca: la sfida continuamente raccolta \ne vinta a creare un paesaggio di arredi innovativi, ma di cui \nsi percepisce al primo sguardo la qualità della realizzazione, \nprima ancora di toccarli ed usarli. NE RISULTA UN MICROCOSMO DOMESTICO \nIN PERFETTO EQUILIBRIO TRA RAGIONE E SENTIMENTO DELL’ABITARE.\nREASON AND SENTIMENT\nStefano Casciani\nOriginating as a union of new forms and masterly techniques \nof high-level joinery cabinet-making, Maxalto is now back at its \ninaugural identity – woodworking. At the same time, Citterio \npursued a lighter image and a cosier idea of interiors. The \ncollection’s successful aim for naturalness is seen first of all in the \nlighter shades of untinted wenge and oak; bronze and chrome \nfinishes for metal; and burnished aluminium for a number of \nstructural frames. The latter are reminiscent of the artistically \nskilled brothers Diego and Alberto Giacometti, crafters of \nextraordinary cast-bronze furniture. The fabrics stand out for \ntheir warm hues, exclusive patterns and handsome textures. \nThe leather is embellished with meticulous stitching – see the \nDives Soft and Imprimatur sofas. Some details show the search \nfor an autonomous, original identity for Maxalto, as if it were a \nbrand-new company.
