Conceptually, we maintain our princi-\nples of design and matter, giving prominence to \nthese spaces, both day and night, as is already \nthe case with our interior line. At Marset, we aim \nto create a mimicry of objects that seek a rele-\nvance that goes beyond the light they emit.\nHow do you think outdoor lighting should \nrelate to nature and architecture?\nLighting should not be invasive, it should \ncomplement the environment. Our objective \nis versatility while maintaining continuity of form.\nSpeaking of your new designs, what led you \nto create a “garage lamp” like the Chispa?\nChispa was born from a meeting with the \nnew brand of the automotive sector, CUPRA, \nwhich was looking to surround itself with com-\nplementary sectors besides its own. CUPRA’s \nvalues are very similar to ours: both brands are \nfrom Barcelona, both have a global vocation and \nboth share a commitment to design. This was the \nstarting point to design this new portable lamp, \nwhich takes us back to the garage.\n¿Qué valor crees que la nueva colección \npuede aportar a un interiorista, diseñador \nde iluminación o paisajista?\nQueremos conseguir un concepto de “co-\nlección”, que un mismo diseño o sus distintas \nversiones puedan iluminar desde la entrada y los \naccesos hasta los porches o fachadas, simple-\nmente adaptando la lámpara a diferentes tipo-\nlogías. Nuestro objetivo es la continuidad formal \npara que quien la pretenda, pueda conseguirla.\nHablando específicamente de tus nuevos \ndiseños, ¿Qué te llevó a crear una lámpara \ncomo la Chispa?\nChispa nació de un encuentro con la nueva \nmarca CUPRA del sector de la automoción, que \nbuscaba rodearse de distintos complementos \nmás allá de su propio sector. Los valores de \nCUPRA son muy afines a los nuestros: ambas \nmarcas son de Barcelona, tienen vocación glo-\nbal y comparten su apuesta por el diseño. This is how the Babila \nwas born, as an “object of light” for the internal \nand external areas of the building in Milan where \nwe currently have the studio. And now Marset is \nhelping me to develop it into a series production.\nWhat was your intention in creating an object \nthat works as much as a mirror as a lamp?\nThe initial idea was to create an object that \nproduces a pleasant indirect light that can also \nreflect the changing sunlight during the day, the \npassage of clouds, and nature, and, at the same \ntime, emit artificial light when natural light is gone.\nYou once mentioned that each design is \npart of a process of discovery. What dis-\ncovery came out from Babila?\nI think the creation of a quality design must \nalways contain an invention or an improvement. \nThe use of the curved mirror of the Babila cre-\nates a very special light effect, which highlights \nthe materials and the architecture where it is \ninstalled, with different installation and integra-\ntion possibilities to accommodate the colors of \ndifferent architectural situations.\nWhat was the transition to mass production \nlike, from producing an object that was ini-\ntially handmade?\nIn essence, the project is the same; there \nare no substantial changes. What does change \nis the technology, by radically modifying the light \nsource with the use of LED, which did not exist \nat that time.\n¿Cómo fue el proceso de conceptualiza-\nción de la Babila?\nDesde hace unos años el estudio desarrolla \nproyectos arquitectónicos integrados, en los que \nestudiamos todos los diversos componentes in-\nternos y externos, incluida la luz a la que siempre \nprestamos mucha atención. Así nació la Babila, \ncomo un objeto de luz para las áreas internas y \nexternas del edificio en Milán en donde actual-\nmente tenemos el estudio. Y ahora Marset me \nha ayudado a desarrollarlo y producirlo en serie.\n¿Cuál era tu intención al crear un objeto que \npuede funcionar como lámpara y espejo?\nLa idea inicial era crear un objeto que pro-\nduzca una luz indirecta y agradable que también \npueda reflejar la luz solar cambiante durante el día, \nel paso de las nubes, la naturaleza, y a su vez, pu-\ndiera emitir luz artificial cuando la luz natural se va.\nUna vez mencionaste que cada diseño for-\nma parte de un proceso de descubrimiento. \n¿Qué descubrimiento salió de la Babila?\nCreo que para que sea un diseño de cali-\ndad, debe aportar innovación. El uso del espejo \ncurvo de la Babila crea un efecto de luz muy es-\npecial, que resalta los materiales y la arquitectura \nde donde se instala, con distintas posibilidades \nde inserción a partir de los colores que acom-\npañan diferentes situaciones arquitectónicas.\n¿Cómo ha sido la transición de producir un \nobjeto diseñado inicialmente de manera ar-\ntesanal a una producción en serie?\nEn esencia, el proyecto es el mismo; no \nhay cambios sustanciales. It’s \na luxury to understand the beauty of darkness, \nand it requires care and consideration to make \nproper use of it.\nIn the search to improve the relationship \nbetween people and their environment, are \nyou looking to create this same relationship \nwith the objects you design?\nI am convinced that the quality of both indoor \nand outdoor environments greatly affects people’s \nquality of life, whether they are at home, at a school, \nat public park, etc. Therefore, we must try to se-\nduce and persuade the user with these spaces, \nbased on a clear intellectual honesty in design.\n¿Qué encuentras interesante en la ilumina-\nción de exteriores?\nLo más interesante de esta iluminación \nes que la luz para exterior siempre debe com-\nbinarse con la luz natural, esta mezcla es muy \nimportante y muchas veces no se considera lo \nsuficiente. In the case of the Elipse, I imagine it \narranged between the house and the garden, \nalways working closely with people, providing \nsomething more than simple illumination. \nDo you think the Elipse creates a balance \nbetween its form and its function?\nI think the form and function dichotomy \nis fundamental in giving meaning to a product. \nWith the Elipse, it is special in that one works in \nfavor of the other. And in this case it’s maybe a \nbit more exaggerated than in others, because \nthe shape is highly characteristic and stands out \nduring the day.\nRegarding the mechanism of the Elipse, it \nworks almost imperceptibly. Was this an \nintentional decision?\nMy philosophy is always to create a light \nthat has a magical contribution, in which you \ndon’t know exactly where the light comes from. \nSince the light is somehow “hidden” it can sur-\nprise the user, and that is precisely what adds \nthe most value.\n¿Qué tipo de innovación crees que aporta \nla Elipse?\nMás allá de ser una lámpara de exterior, \ncon una luz que viene del suelo y enfoca ha-\ncia arriba, también es un objeto de diseño que \nformalmente cobra relevancia durante el día,  \ny su iluminación genera un efecto especial du-\nrante la noche. \n¿Cuál es la relación de la Elipse con la ilu-\nminación natural y su contexto?\nSu iluminación exterior siempre se debería \nutilizar de manera delicada para no entorpecer \nla visión general del exterior, intentando que la \niluminación se absorba en el jardín. En el caso \nde la Elipse, la imagino dispuesta entre la casa \ny el jardín, siempre trabajando cerca de las per-\nsonas, aportando algo más aparte de emitir luz.\n¿Crees que en la Elipse hay un equilibrio \nentre su forma y su función?\nEl binomio forma y función creo que es fun-\ndamental para darle sentido a un producto. En el \ncaso de la Elipse es especial que una funcione \na favor de la otra. Y en este caso, quizá es más \nexagerado que en otras, porque la forma es muy \ncaracterística y evidente durante el día.\nEn cuanto al mecanismo de la Elipse, \nfunciona casi de manera imperceptible.  \n¿Fue una decisión intencional?\nMi filosofía siempre procura crear una luz \nque tenga una aportación mágica, en la que no \nsabes bien de dónde viene la fuente de luz. Some of them are also full of \nmeaning for me, because I come from a family \nlinked strongly with craftsmanship; and others \nI use because they provide the durability that a \nproject requires.\nWhat is the relationship between Lab and \nnature, being an outdoor lamp?\nIts design is motivated by imitating the color \nrange of its surroundings. If the lamp is surround-\ned by nature, the dialogue between them will be \nmutually constructive.\nWith Labs new styles, what kind of sensa-\ntion or intention do you wish to transit?\nIt’s a slimmer design. The original fixture was \nmeant to be integrated with the environment, to \nblend in, but the new version can also gain its own \nprominence if used in a place where the materials \nprovide a contrast with the environment.
