Working \nwith Konstantin Grcic for several years, Stefan graduated in 2002 and founded DIEZ \nOFFICE in Munich. From 2007 onwards Stefan was Professor of Industrial Design \nat the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, joining the School of Industrial Design \nLund, Sweden, in 2015. Since 2018 Stefan Diez is Head of Industrial Design at Die \nAngewandte in Vienna. In 2008, DIEZ OFFICE moved into the renovated premises of \na former joinery, the ideal platform for Diez’s distinct combination of hands-on exper-\nimentation and technical know-how. Led by curiosity and supported by a network \nof local craftsmen and specialists, DIEZ OFFICE is dedicated to transforming ideas \ninto actual products with great diligence and proficiency. Together with his team, \nStefan Diez has been exploring a broad spectrum of design, creating award-winning \nfurniture, luminaires and accessories, in collaboration with internationally renowned \nmanufacturers like Rosenthal, Thonet, HAY, e15, Magis, Vibia, Viccarbe, Wagner and \nmany more. \n",2,{"image":22,"text":23,"number":24},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002Fb2\u002Fb8085eb76814521189ddebf9ef9ea6-27080f6164.3.png","What was the starting point for developing \nCOSTUME?\n \nSD: Magis came to me with the \nquestion: “What if we completely rethought \nthe sofa?“ \nWhat was your answer?\n \nSD: We set out together with Magis \nto develop a sofa system that could be \ncompletely dismantled. With as little \npolyurethane foam as possible and a textile \ncover that is washable and can be replaced. \nThe system was to consist of only a few parts. \nAt the beginning, it all seemed quite \ncomplicated, almost impossible. In the end, \nwe worked on it for four years and invested a \nlot of time in studying it.\nWas it worth the effort?\n \nSD: I think we got the concept down \nto a really good point in the end. Dominik \nHammer from my studio put a lot of energy \ninto it just as the team from Magis around \nEnrico Perin did. COSTUME has become \na typical Magis project, very much in the \ntradition of northern Italian manufacturers. In \nthe start and development phase, all those \ninvolved have to show a lot of imagination and \nconfidence; later, the risk of failure has to be \nborne. Eugenio Perazza has become a legend \nwith his idea of design. We in the studio are \ntherefore really happy about the collaboration \nand the result.\nHow important is the system approach to \nyou?\n \nSD: Systems are something like \nan alphabet. For me, it’s not so much about \nproviding ready-made answers, but about \nbuilding bricks with which you can formulate \nwords, sentences and stories. Systems are \nnot static, but can always be reinterpreted. \nThe individual building units can be further \ndeveloped and improved separately. I see \nan interesting logic behind this, which fully \nexploits the potential of industrial production \nand industrial design.\nAnd what does that mean in practical terms \nfor COSTUME?\n \nSD: The modular structure of \nCOSTUME means that individual components \ncan be easily replaced. For example, when \nthey get dirty or worn out. Even the thin PUR \nfoam insert can be cleaned. The cover, too, of \ncourse. A sofa has to withstand a lot, \nespecially in families. The fact that the core of \nour sofa can be easily separated from its \ncover is not only an advantage for the user, \nby the way. A sofa only becomes recyclable \nthrough its modular construction.\nWhat else is important to you in the project?\n \nSD: The fact that we make the sofa \nbodies from recycled plastic - that is entirely \nin the spirit of the circular economy. At the \nmoment, industrial waste is recycled for the \nproduction of the sofa bodies. In the near \nfuture, Magis will also have old packaging \nshredded and processed to make new \nCOSTUME elements.\nHow would you describe your co-operation \nwith Magis? \nSD: A project is always a \njourney together. Magis understands like few \nothers in the industry how to make the journey \nitself the goal and to skilfully steer the view \nbetween details and perspective.\nWhat does Magis contribute to the partner-\nship with a designer? \nSD: Magis is \none of the very few companies that puts real \ninnovation before marketing concepts. “What \nif we did things in a completely different way?” \nEugenio Perazza and his team is curious, \nconstantly searching. Together with Enrico \nPerin, they manage to keep opening up new \nperspectives through discoveries along the \nway, so to speak. Enthusiasm and passion are \nthe driving force at Magis. That’s why we value \nthe collaboration so much.\nAnd how would you yourself describe \nyour studio’s work? \nSD: We prefer \nto get involved in projects where the result is \nunpredictable. We want to be surprised at \nwork and get to know new things. We believe \nthat the way to innovative solutions is through \ntechnical know-how, the right instinct and a \nlot of experimentation. An insert made of pocket spring cores provides the cushioning for the seat \nand backrest. On top of this is a thin layer of polyurethane foam. The whole is held \ntogether by a cover made of fabric that can be fastened on using tension belts and \neasily removed at any time.
