The forerunners to both lamps were seen in 1925, \nwhen System PH was introduced in Paris for the first time.  \nThe whole number sizes are best suited to general lighting and \nprovide great ambience, which is why they hang high. Marianne  \nPanton still lives in Basel, from where  \nshe shares memories of her life with  \nVerner Panton and his work.\nAfter moving to Basel together, the Pantons went on to employ \nabout ten people and worked on great projects like Der Spiegel \nVerlagshaus, the Bayer exhibition ships and many more. Then, \nthere was all the furniture, the textiles and, of course, the lamps. \nThe amazing Panthella has always been a favourite of Marianne \nPanton’s, and to this day, she and her daughters all have Panthellas  \nin their homes – both in the table and floor versions. \nThe chrome favourite\n“The beautiful chrome version of the Panthella floor lamp stood in \nour hallway. One day, when I opened the big wardrobe, the door \nbroke off its hinges and crashed down heavily, first on my head  \nand then down on the Panthella, which was crushed beyond repair. \nAnd it couldn’t be replaced at the time!”\nMarianne Panton remembers the mishap as rather tragic, even \nthough there were plenty of Panthellas in the Panton home and \noffice – in every available colour. All the same, the one they both \nloved the most was the one in chrome. \nShe explains how Verner Panton was particularly fond of the metallic \nlook, which he used repeatedly, not only for light fixtures, but also in \nmany of his pieces of furniture and interiors. He was drawn to how \nthe material and the metallic foils were able to reflect the colours and \nambience of a room, and how it mirrored its furniture and sculptures.\n“To me, Verner’s design universe was extremely exciting, colourful, \nplayful – just wonderful. He found inspiration almost everywhere,  \non walks, in music, in new materials or new technology. He was  \nvery curious and always open to new ideas and possibilities,”  \nsays Marianne Panton about her husband’s work. \nA solid partnership\nHer own role in the Panton success story was nevertheless \nsignificant too. She was skilled at the business side of things, \nas Jens Bernsen, former director of the Danish Design Center, \nnotes more than once in his book entitled Verner Panton – \nspace:time:matter: \n“Marianne stored the contacts and the ideas, which might bloom  \nfor a brief moment and then be forgotten. Everything was taken \ndown on a typewriter, in tiny apothecary print.”\nIn Marianne Panton’s own words, she had nothing directly to do with \nVerner Panton’s creative work, except for helping him build some \nlamp models. However, she took care of all the practical aspects  \nof their life, keeping his back free, as she says. \nPanton won the American International Design Award in 1963  \nand 1969, as well as the PH award in 1967, which were granted  \nin acknowledgement of an extraordinary creative talent.\nInspired by PH\nLighting played a great role in Verner Panton’s own life. As Marianne \nPanton explains, their home and their office were filled with Panton’s \nlamps and light fixtures. She relays that Panton said more than  \nonce that you could ruin even the best interior or colour with the \nwrong lighting.\nEarlier on, Poul Henningsen had been Verner Panton’s father-in- \nlaw, when Panton was married to his stepdaughter Tove Kemp for \na short period of time. Panton was captivated by Henningsen’s \nlighting philosophy and work, and the two became lifelong friends.\n“Apart from being a very controversial and fascinating personality, \nPoul Henningsen was also one of Denmark’s most famous and \nrenowned lamp designers at the time. Studying his revolutionary \nideas and concepts, Verner was definitely inspired to work with \nlighting and lamps himself. He saw the collaboration as a great \nprivilege, she says. It was also important for him to be able \nto explain his ideas in his mother tongue. Living and working \nin Switzerland in the 1960s, when Verner Panton’s world \nfame took off, hardly anyone knew that he was Danish.\nThe Panthella remains one of Verner Panton’s most revered \nlight designs and today, apart from again being available \nin his own favourite shade of high lustre chrome, the icon \nhas also been introduced in a brass metallised version. In \n2022, another classic Panthella hue is presented, when the \ntranslucent grey opal finish that Panton introduced to the \nworld in 1971 will once more become available in stores.\nDanish
