It consists of an architectural design
set in its unique environment.
Environment and architecture cannot be seen
as two different entities, they form a whole, in close
interaction with one another.
Therefore, lighting is not merely a matter of indoor
settings. The moment the building is shrouded in the
darkness of night, outdoor lighting connects the life
indoors with the outside world.
kreon luminaires for outdoor use constitute the
same detail that can reflect and integrate in architecture
within its purest form, as its indoor counterparts. This principle applies
to outdoor lighting as well. In
addition to your house itself, its
environment is equally important
and needs full attention when it
comes to lighting selection.
In order to choose the perfect
outdoor lighting, it is strongly
advised to make an appeal to
a lighting expert. He or she can
determine which type of light
should be used to experience
and enjoy its full capacity. If
you prefer to start by yourself,
you should read and take the
following do’s and don’ts into
account in order to achieve the
perfect result.
Everything starts with your
house
Your house is the center piece
of your property. By using the
appropriate lighting, it will
enforce its visibility in the dark.
In addition, it will contribute to
the security of your property.
During the set-up, it is crucial
to ensure the walls as well
as the architectural elements
of your house are sufficiently
illuminated.
Use of shadow
Outdoor lighting doesn’t
only concern what can be
illuminated, but puts focus on
the interplay of light and shadow
together. For example: by using
lights at the base to shine up
a stone wall, the texture of the
material will be accentuated to
create a certain level of depth.
Work with layers
Depth and light texture are
created by using different layers
of light. Imagine you have a
beautiful object in your garden
that you would like to illuminate.
While setting up the lighting
from different angles, the object
will be the eye-catcher of your
garden, instead of the lighting
itself. This creates a unique
effect that won’t interfere with
the visual strength of the object.
Furthermore, you can add
visual depth to the outdoor area
by correctly positioning your
outdoor lighting. We often see
that only the façade or terrace
is illuminated and is creating
a large black depth from the
inside. You can easily resolve this
side effect by illuminating a few
trees/objects in the perimeter of
your house. By doing this you will
increase the outdoor space and
the feeling of safety around your
house.
Choose quality
It may seem commonplace, but
it’s better to choose high-quality
material. In the long run, this
will be more beneficial than
opting for cheaper alternatives
that will decay faster over time.
Moreover, qualitative lighting is
often more economical due to
the choice of materials and type
of luminaires that are used.
Play with lines
Try to avoid the placement
of lighting fixtures in a single
straight line, along a pathway
for example. It gives the
unpleasant feeling of walking
on a driveway or an airplane
runway. Get creative and play
with the aesthetics to create a
unique lighting experience.
Don’t forget details
Generally, there is a strong focus
on large aspects for outdoor
lighting, such as trees and
sculptures. Details are often
forgotten while they can bring
in a decisive effect. Therefore,
look for small areas that can
be accentuated with the right
lighting. This will benefit the
consistency of the bigger
picture.
Limit your choices
As mentioned earlier, everything
starts with your house itself. It
is crucial to maintain the same
lighting style and to avoid a
disorganized range of lights.
Don’t forget to look at the
location of the fixtures as well
and choose a matching model.
This way you avoid a disorderly
excess of all kinds of models.
Avoid solar lights
Individual lighting fixtures that
use solar power are often not
as effective as one might think.
This type of lighting is weather-
dependent and often doesn’t
have a large storage capacity
for a solid light intensity. Solar
lights are rather suitable as
decorative lighting. The
lighting should be in function of
the dishes and the guests.”
Bert Meeuwis: “We also didn’t
want to be tied to a fixed table
layout. We
had already made several
designs but none of them had
felt right so far. We had recently
the deadline. Bert and Karlijn
preferred local partners such
as Jansen Group for the interior
finishing and kreon for the
lighting. We had a meeting
with everyone well in time and
worked out the appropriate
arrangements. The schedules
were constantly adjusted along
the way and the deadline was
met perfectly.”
Daan Van den Branden: “We
usually first conduct a lighting
study to calculate the amount
of light that should be in the
room. We then make a proposal
based on this lighting plan and
briefings from the client and
the architect. This is where we
usually make some adjustments
and make some changes
along the way. In this case
however, there was little need
for that with regard to functional
lighting.”
Stefanie Coninx: “True, the
functional lighting throughout
the building was spot on right
from the start. That happens
when you perfectly understand
each other.
As regards the eye-catcher in
the restaurant, we had to search
much harder to find the perfect
match.”
Bert Meeuwis: “We wanted
to make a statement. We were overwhelmed
by a feeling that we had found
exactly what we were looking
for. Even the colour samples
seemed a perfect fit, considering
we were looking for something
with bronze colours.”
Carol Pareit: “After that it all
happened very quickly. In a
few days, we worked out the
entire design and fine-tuned
it to the last detail. Together
with Stefanie, we decided to
introduce a wave motion theme
in the whole. The whole design
was tailor-made: apart from
the technical integration of the
suspension and integration into
an acoustic sloping ceiling, each
fixture has a certain length with
adapted transparent cable. The
modules had to ‘float’ in space,
so to speak, mimicking the
effect of fireflies in nature. “
Daan Van den Branden:
“The sloping ceiling with a
minimum installation depth
required a different approach
to the suspension. For this, we
developed a plaster kit with
an oval-shaped slot that tilts
in the direction of the fixture.
This allowed us to guarantee a
handsome result regardless of
the various angles of inclination.
A total of 96 lighting elements
are suspended, each with its
own positioning and length. It
was no easy task to suspend
these. Each point was marked
off on the floor with a laser and
numbered from 1 to 96. The
same numbering was placed on
the spotlights.”
Bert Meeuwis: “That was
indeed quite a job to suspend
them. Each pendant is
also considerably heavy.
All 96 pieces had separate
reinforcement, to prevent the
acoustic ceiling from cracking.
It took three days to suspend
them. The people from kreon
were there to help. We hadn’t
requested them to, but we were
obviously grateful for their help.”
Carol Pareit: “We are committed
to every project and we are
absolutely determined to ensure
its success. We therefore viewed
the result with particular pride.
We regularly get customers who
come over to our showroom and
refer to the lighting they saw
here.”
Bert Meeuwis: “We also get a
lot of positive feedback from
our guests. That’s great to hear.
We can already look back on a
successful project and positive
cooperation. If we were to start
again, we would unhesitatingly
choose kreon again. That
creates a certain atmosphere.
It is our task to look from a light
technical perspective as people
are often too visually oriented.
Carol Pareit: “When the first
version of a lighting design is
finished, we present it to the
client as adjustments can still
be made at this stage. There
are also certain interior design
choices made that influenced
the lighting. That is when we
modify the design. The days of a ceiling
tile measuring 60 cm by 60 or
120 cm are well and truly over
with vektron. Moreover, the
solutions of vektron put an end
to white lighting fixtures that
turn out to be made of a slightly
different shade of white than the
ventilation grid, air conditioning
or built-in speakers. With
vektron, colour and finish fit
together harmoniously and
seamlessly.
Ceiling islands
The possibility of far-reaching
customisation does not mean,
however, that vektron does not
offer standardised - yet flexible
- ceiling systems. For example,
the all-new vektron ceiling rafts
incorporate both lighting (with
built-in aplis 60 downlights)
and acoustic insulation. After
all, suspended ceilings affect
the sound performance of
a room and must therefore
optimally meet the user’s
comfort requirements. Our
vektron ceiling rafts integrate
sound absorption up to a factor
of 0.9 while guaranteeing sound
attenuation of up to 47 decibels
and are fitted with an acoustic
fleece as standard. Can you
combine this with such futuristic
features?
Werner Van Rethy: “It’s
actually quite simple. The
most sustainable aspect of
kreon is primarily known for its
architectural lighting solutions,
but kreon is also a manufacturer
of ‘smart’ ceilings, why this
expansion?
Werner Van Rethy: “kreon was
founded in the 1980s on the
belief that lighting is a creative
extension of architecture.
That is still part of our DNA. In
the early 2000s, we took our
ceiling solutions a step further.
For a project in Singapore,
we collaborated with a
manufacturer of metal ceiling
systems. We were always faced
with the challenge of integrating
our lighting into the ceilings.
The idea then came to look at
the situation as a whole and
develop our own ceiling around
the lighting.
In addition to increasing quality
and uniformity, it means there
is a single point of contact on
site for everything concerning
the ceiling, instead of lots of
different partners. It’s our way of
unburdening builders, architects
and engineering firms even
more. It began with a ceiling
with lighting, then we added
ventilation and more and more
technology.”
This concept proved to have
international appeal, so can we
assume it was caught on?

Werner Van Rethy: “I am
convinced that there will always
be a market for quality and the
concept of integrated solutions.
technological developments
play a role too. For us, adding
a digital layer to our ceilings is
self-evident. It enables extensive
automation. That wasn’t
technically possible before.”
As a company, how do you deal
with new technology such as
artificial intelligence and 3D
printing?
Werner Van Rethy: “We embrace
technological evolutions. The
(r)evolution from conventional
lighting to LED lighting had
a huge impact on the lighting
industry. This technology gave
lighting a digital character.
The addition of sensors,
Bluetooth, beacons and so
on, make lighting and, by
extension, our ceilings, capable
of so much more. Our ceiling
system provides an aesthetic
value in the room as well as
efficiency thanks to the open
blade structure. That’s vitally
important to us. Just as we have
learned in recent years, due to
the tightness in the construction
industry and the challenges with
supplies and delivery times, that
speed of delivery is essential.
That’s the reason for our ceiling
rafts, a standard package we
offer on the market, in modular
form. Fast delivery and easy
installation. Previously, our
ceilings were always project-
based. Now we are turning them
into a product.”
How do new products and ideas
for ceilings come about?
Werner Van Rethy: “It depends
on several factors. In the
first instance, creativity is
ingrained in our kreon DNA,
which is invariably based on
the architectural character. We
want to continue to ensure that
our ceilings remain a creative
extension of the architecture.
Secondly, we constantly
listen to the needs of the
market. We evolve alongside
it. Consider, for example, the
shift towards energy neutrality
and the increasing importance
of comfort. In the past, the
preference was to have as
many people as possible in
the smallest possible space,
because it was cost-effective.
The focus on well-being in the
workplace ensures that a total
package like the one we offer
is in high demand. And finally,
our designs is precisely their
timeless character. It means our
products are designed to last
more than 20 years. We can
easily adapt these sustainable
products to new technologies,
which once again extends
their lifespan. The timeless
character of our products and
services is an asset, which is
why we embrace technological
evolutions to make them future-
proof, which has suddenly
become the epitome of
sustainability.”
Thanks to our integrated ceiling
concept, architects can really
get creative with the ceiling.
And it is much more efficient to
discuss this with one partner,
rather than multiple parties.
This was all achieved under the
brand name vektron. In 2009, we
changed the name from vektron
to kreon ceiling solutions
to appeal to international
customers as well.
kreon ceiling solutions made it
easier and less ambiguous.”
Now, more than 10 years later,
you’re changing the name
again.
Werner Van Rethy: “Indeed,
kreon ceiling solutions, in our
opinion, no longer reflected our
current offer. So, in late 2022, we
changed it again and opted for
vektron comfort ceilings. After
all, it’s comfort we provide to
the end user, whether through
lighting, ventilation, or acoustic
comfort, not forgetting our
climate ceilings.”
What are the ambitions for
vektron comfort ceilings?
Werner Van Rethy: “We never
stop innovating. We continue
to expand our capabilities.
This year, we are launching
a new ceiling concept called
‘ili’. It allows us to provide
a solution in buildings with
concrete core activation, in
addition to our climate ceilings.
This ceiling improves energy
“ We never stop innovating.
We continue to expand
our capabilities.”
Werner Van Rethy
40
kreonicle
41
interview
",22
"/media/images/83/3aea4b8b62db6d754a75672d9e172b-2761a46cc4.23.png","Architects
Luc Spits Architecture
Location
Liège, Belgium
Bespoke products
tailor-made vektron acoustic ceiling
Residential
The architecture of this villa is motivated
by the liberation of space and the keen
awareness of the essence of the materi-
als used. This gearbox is an exten-
sion to the kreon kagi range and
allows you to make a 230V sur-
face mounted connection. kreon
kagi gearbox can either be wall
or ceiling mounted, horizontal or
vertical. It can be combined with
all different kreon kagi profiles.
The multiple mounting options
allow you to create endless
compositions.
The gearboxes are available
as standard in black and white
and in different wattages, which
makes it possible to connect
multiple profiles with 1 gearbox.
kreon kagi
pendant
kreon kagi is an innovative
profile system combining linear
and accent lighting. The basic
24V profile, initially available as
a recessed or surface mounted
profile, can now be installed as
a pendant profile luminaire.
Just like the ceiling mount-
ed versions, the pendants can
optionally be equipped with 16
mm or 26 mm diameter satinat-
ed continuous light tubes for a
sustained soft light distribution.
A junction allows a perpendicu-
lar, 90° tilted second level con-
nection of the 24V profile. Round
or square shaped spotlights and
wallwashers can be added just
by clamping them on the main
profiles making kreon kagi an
essential lighting tool that can
be used as a graphic play of
light or guide light.
Revisited wall
washer optic
The wallwash optics in the
downlight 60, downlight 80 high
efficiency and holon 60 on-track
will receive a significant change.
The ‘non-reflective’ surfaces
of the wallwash optic are now
painted white or black depend-
ing on the colour of the lumi-
naire. Whereas previously these
‘non-reflective’ surfaces always
had an aluminium finish. This
change ensures that the optic is
even more discreetly integrated
into the fixture.
In practice, a white downlight
60 wallwasher will therefore be
delivered with a white finished
wallwash optic. Similarly, this
applies to black versions having
a black finished wallwash optic.
kreon down in-line
60 downlights
In 2021, the 60 downlight series
was released.
