Having \nbeen invited to develop a patent in \nAustria by Chancellor Metternich, who \nhad seen his products at the Exhibition \nheld by the society of friends of arts in \nKoblenz, in 1842, Michael Thonet left \nBoppard in Germany, to settle in Vienna, \nwhere in 1853 he founded the com-\npany “Gebrüder Thonet” by involving \nhis five sons. In the Hapsburg capital, \nMichael Thonet abandoned the more \ntraditional technique of glued lamellar \nwood in favour of the industrial chemical \n- mechanical steam bent process. This \ninnovation led him to begin producing \nwooden furniture, presenting a collec-\ntion of elegant, yet practical designs that \ncould be manufactured on a larger scale. \nHe immediately supported this with a \ndistribution and sales network that was \ncapable of penetrating any market. It \nwas during this time that products such \nas chair No. 1 designed for the famous \nViennese Palais Schwarzenberg made \ntheir début, gaining fame as ‘typically’ \nThonet, and from which many other \nmodels were then designed, up to and \nincluding the classic chair No. 14. The \ncompany’s use of high technology and \nproduction techniques, together with \nwidespread fame and a growing repu-\ntation, encouraged the most important \nViennese architects to design new prod-\nucts. Otto Wagner commissioned the \nfurnishing of the Post Sparkasse. Adolf \nLoos designed the chair for the Café \nMuseum, in 1895 writing: “When I was in \nAmerica, I realised that the Thonet chair \nwas the most modern seating available”. \nIn 1911, the Gebrüder Thonet catalogue \nboasted 980 different models. By the \nend of the second world war, independ-\nent production plants had been set \nup in various different countries and \ndeveloped into separate businesses. \nIn Austria, the home market of Gebrüder \nThonet, the business was rebuilt by \ndescendants of Michael Thonet, includ-\ning his great-grandson Fritz Jakob \nThonet as well as Fritz Jakob’s children \nEvamarie Thonet and Richard Thonet. \nAfter the war, they had to start from \nscratch, with little more than their expe-\nrience and passion for furniture. They \nrecommenced their business in one of \nGebrüder Thonet’s former warehouses \nin Vienna. From 1948 on they rented a \nproduction site in Rohrau, Steiermark, \nbefore they finally built their own pro-\nduction site in Friedberg in 1962. In \n1976 the Austrian business changed \nits name from Gebrüder Thonet to its \ncurrent name Gebrüder Thonet Vienna. \nMore recently, Gebrüder Thonet Vienna \nGmbH (GTV) has develop edits work in \na successful blend of the traditional and \nthe modern, of continuity and renewal, \nwith a new production program that \nbegins by re-editing a series of Gebrüder \nThonet classics. \nAt the same time, GTV stands for con-\ntemporary furnishing. Advanced produc-\ntion techniques are applied to innovative \ndesigns and uses of materials, to create \nhighly sought-after, multipurpose fur-\nnishing items. Truly original, up-to-date \nsolutions that integrate well with the \nmore classic products of its catalogue, \nnow reworked. Items such as chair \nNo. 14, of which more than 50 million \nwere made between 1850 and 1930, \nhave gone down in history for their fine \ndesign and manufacturing quality, and \nyet still today excite and attract new gen-\nerations. GTV always succeeds in finding \nthe perfect combination of tradition \nand innovation, assisted by continuous \nresearch into new, clear-cut, versatile \ndesigns.
