Quello che raccontiamo qui nasce in \nun piccolo centro situato dove la Brianza monzese \nlascia il posto a quella comasca: Cabiate. Proprio \nqui, all’inizio del ‘900, ha inizio una tradizione di \nartigiani maestri nella lavorazione del legno per la \nrealizzazione di elementi di arredo. \nNel corso degli anni a Cabiate gli artigiani e i maestri \nfalegnami si specializzano sempre di più, sanno fare \ntante cose e tutte di livello e qualità superlativa; \nsono bravi nel curvare e modellare i legnami, \nintarsiarli, decorarli. \nAlcuni di questi artigiani sono in anticipo sui tempi \ne colgono un bisogno, che oggi definiremmo di B2B; \nogni bottega ha di che lavorare. Sono imprese e al \ntempo stesso luoghi di formazione professionale \ndove spesso, l’allievo più bravo, dopo aver maturato \nesperienza, crea la propria attività.  Aziende che \ngemmano altre aziende. Saperi e competenze che \nsi tramandano e fanno nascere un ecosistema \nproduttivo e manifatturiero unico nel suo genere.\nEvery legend has a place where it lives and breathes. \nOurs was born in a little town of Brianza, where the \nMonza area gives way to Como: Cabiate. In the early \n20th century, this is where a tradition of master artisan \njoinery first began, for the production of furnishing \nelements.  \nWith the passing of time, craftsmen and master joiners \nbecame increasingly specialised, honing a multitude of \nskills for the creation of impeccably high standard pro-\nducts. They master the curving, modelling, inlaying and \ndecoration of wood. \nSome of these craftsmen were ahead of their time and \nanticipated a need we would refer to today as B2B. \nEach workshop had something to work on. Workshops \nwere both businesses and professional training hubs, \nwhose finest pupils would in turn set up their very own \nbusiness, after acquiring experience.  Workshops bud-\nding from other workshops. Knowledge and skills were \nhanded on and building up into a unique and productive \nmanufacturing ecosystem.\nIn quei primi anni del secolo, contemporaneamente \nalle attività produttive, crescono e si moltiplicano \niniziative nel commercio e nella ristorazione. \nCome le case anche questi locali hanno bisogno di \narredi - tavoli, sedie, banconi di mescita - solidi, ben \nfatti, di qualità e soprattutto non molto costosi. \nÉ a questo momento storico che risale la produzione \ndi una bella sedia dalla linea semplice ed essenziale. \nUn piano di seduta solido e resistente che poggia su \nquattro gambe robuste per dare stabilità.  \nDecisi tratti verticali ed un’accogliente curva si fon-\ndono nell’archetipo che da allora in poi tutti chiame-\nranno Sedia Milano. Il prodotto artigianale presto si \ndiffonderà oltre i territori della Brianza verso l’omo-\nnima città, nelle altre province lombarde e perfino nel \nvicino Canton Ticino, diventando, per quasi un secolo, \nla tipica seduta da trattoria e ristorante di queste \nzone. \nCabiate, nel frattempo, si caratterizza come la capi-\ntale lombarda della “cadrega” ed il mito della Sedia \nMilano non poteva che nascere qui, in questo piccolo \ne laborioso borgo brianzolo, fra l’altopiano delle \nGroane e la valle del Seveso. L’orgoglio dei brianzoli, \nspecialmente i legnamèe (I falegnami), è che l’illustre \ncittà di Milano, considerata la capitale del Design, \nsenza quel grande distretto del lavoro, dei saperi \ne della maestria che è la Brianza, non avrebbe mai \nottenuto questo titolo, diventando sede della più \nimportante Design Week del mondo.\nIn tandem with the boom in manufacturing businesses, \nthe turn of the century also saw a sharp rise in trade \nand catering ventures. Just like houses, such premises \nand facilities also needed furniture (tables, chairs, bar \ncounters), well made and especially not exorbitantly \npriced. \nThis inspired the creation of a beautiful chair, characte-\nrised by simple and essential lines. A sturdy, hard-we-\naring seat on four equally robust legs for stability. \nDecisive vertical lines and a soft curve converge to form \nan archetype which came to be known as Sedia Milano. \nThe artisan product soon spread beyond the Brianza \narea to the eponymous city, to other provinces in Lom-\nbardy and even to the neighbouring Ticino Canton. For \nalmost a century it became the typical chair of local inns \nand restaurants. \nIn the meantime, Cabiate carved out its very own \nreputation as the Lombard capital of the “Cadrega”, \nwhere else could the legendary Sedia Milano have been \ninvented, apart from here, this small industrious village \nin Brianza, nestled between the Groane plateau and the \nSeveso valley. I ricordi ripor-\ntano alla mente giorni in cui il degrado e il senso di \nabbandono abitavano questi spazi. \nMentre attorno alla stazione Centrale nasceva il \ngrattacielo Pirelli, opera del grande Giò Ponti, e poco \noltre a ovest il centro direzionale del Comune di Mila-\nno, lo spazio occupato dalla vecchia stazione di Porta \nNuova fino alla nuova stazione Garibaldi era rimasto \nun grande perimetro vuoto, un incompiuto riempito \nper anni con le attrazioni del luna park “Le Varesine”, \nriferimento alle linee ferroviarie per Varese. \noggi, arrivare in piazza Gae Aulenti e sentirsi cir-\ncondati da edifici iconici e simbolici come la torre e \nil pavilion Unicredit e, poco più a nord dalle torri del \nBosco Verticale e gli altri grattacieli che hanno mu-\ntato lo skyline di Milano, lascia estasiati: gli edifici, \nil parco “la Biblioteca degli Alberi” e tutto quello che \nanima la piazza, dai giochi d’acqua ai bar, le librerie, \ni negozi - rappresentano la modalità più moderna e \ncontemporanea del vivere una città. Qui si è compiu-\nta la più grande opera di trasformazione urbana di \nuna città italiana negli ultimi 50 anni, al primo posto \nfra quelle europee. \nPorta nuova represents the symbol, the release and the \nrelaunch of the whole Lombardy metropolis. Sotto il rinnovato dominio austriaco, il mo-\nnumento venne dedicato alla Pace tra i Paesi europei \nottenuta tramite il congresso di Vienna del 1815.\nIf you happen to be walking west through Sempione \nPark, the biggest green lung in the city centre, at one \nyou come to an imposing architectural complex. This is \nthe largest neoclassical monument in Milan. \nIt was the brainchild of architect Luigi Cagnola, who  \nalso designed it. In his way he wanted to honour napo-\nleon’s victory at the Battle of Jena in 1806 against the \nPrussians. Years of domination by the Austrians had \ngiven the Milanese a sympathy for the Corsican gene-\nral’s deeds.\nThis monument must be admired both from close up,  \nto take in the details, and from a distance, to appreciate \nits sheer grandeur. Qui, da via Solferino, sede storica del Corriere \ndella Sera, fino in centro, alle spalle della Scala riesci \nad ammirare l’insieme dei luoghi che da oltre due \nsecoli caratterizzano questo pezzo di Milano: l’Acca-\ndemia delle Belle Arti, l’osservatorio Astronomico e \nl’orto Botanico cittadino. \nMa il vero fiore all’occhiello è la Pinacoteca, uno dei \nmusei più ricchi e importanti d’Italia. Il palazzo che \nla ospita si apre su un cortile porticato, di due piani \nal cui centro potrai ammirare la statua di Napoleone, \nche con Milano ebbe un rapporto importante; qui \nsi fece incoronare Re d’Italia indossando la coro-\nna ferrea appartenuta a Teodolinda, la Regina dei \nLongobardi, popolo che per secoli governò la penisola \nitaliana. \nSugli oltre 25mila metri quadrati di superficie sono \nesposte opere di grande pregio e valore, tra cui spic-\ncano alcune pietre miliari della storia dell’arte. ca-\npolavori al cui cospetto resterai senza fiato. Il Cristo \ndel Mantegna o il Bacio di Hayez sono due esempi di \nquesta esperienza emozionale che vivrai visitando le \nsale della Pinacoteca. \nUna nota curiosa: Brera è stato il primo quartiere di \nMilano a dare vita al Fuorisalone, la kermesse che ha \ndiffuso nel territorio urbano gli effetti del Salone del \nMobile, importante fiera del settore arredamento, \nche ogni anno rende Milano la capitale del Design. \nSe ci pensiamo il design è al tempo stesso progetto \ne arte. Dove se non in Brera, da oltre due secoli culla \ndell’arte di Milano, poteva dunque nascere il design \ndistrict? Ti suggerisco di approfondire questo tema di \npersona vivendo questa magnifica esperienza.\nIf you want a natural view of Old Milan you cannot do \nbetter than to visit Brera. Here, from Via Solferino, whe-\nre there are the historical offices of the Corriere della \nSera newspaper, to the centre behind La Scala opera \nhouse, you can admire a large part and all of the places \nwhich for more than two centuries have characterised \nthis part of Milan: the Academy of Fine Arts, the Astro-\nnomical Observatory, and the city’s Botanical Garden. \nBut the real jewel in the crown is the Pinacoteca art \ngallery, one of the richest and most important museums \nin Italy. The building in which it is housed opens onto a \ncourtyard surrounded by a two-storey portico.  \nThe first sight that strikes you as you enter is the statue \nof napoleon, who had a special relationship with Milan. \nIt was here that he was crowned King of Italy with the \niron crown that had once belonged to Theodelinda,  \nQueen of the Langobards who governed the Italian \npeninsula.\nHighly valuable works of art are displayed in its more \nthan 25,000 square metres of floor space. Some are \nmilestones in the history of art and can leave you brea-\nthless as you stand in front of them. Mantegna’s Christ, \nor Hayez’s The Kiss are two examples of this emotional \nexperience that leaves you open-mouthed when you \nvisit the Pinacoteca’s galleries. \nAn interesting note. Brera was the first area in Milan to \nhost the Fuorisalone, the fair that spread the effects of \nthe Furniture Show across the city, making Milan the \ncapital of Design. When you think about it, design is \nfunction and art at the same time. Could that perhaps \nbe why it was only in Brera, for more than two centuries \nthe cradle of Milan art, that the design district could \ndevelop? In quel punto della pavimentazione è \nriprodotto un toro. L’azione non è altro che un rituale \nscaramantico e di buon augurio per invocare la fortu-\nna e il desiderio di ritornare presto a Milano. \nNegli ultimi anni è diventato possibile accedere an-\nche alle balconate del tetto per poter così ammirare \nsia la Galleria sia la città da un punto di vista unico e \ninsolito.\nThe eighteenth century Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II \nis another place you must come and see if you are in \nMilan.\nTo call it a shopping mall, or a covered pedestrianised \nstreet, or a short cut between Piazza Duomo and  \nPiazza della Scala may be true, but does not do this pla-\nce justice. Ever since it was built, the Galleria has aimed \nto be the symbol of the modern eighteenth century that \ngoes against modernity and against the industrial revo-\nlution that was to change the history of the world. Un mix costrut-\ntivo di grattacieli e residenze, centri commerciali, \nservizi e spazi verdi in perfetta armonia. \ne pensare che questa era la Piazza delle Armi dove, \nnegli anni ’20, si insediò l’ente Autonomo Fiera \nInternazionale di Milano, con i suoi primi padiglioni \ned il grande palazzo delle Nazioni (palazzo Cisi) sorti, \ndopo la seconda guerra mondiale dalle macerie dei \nbombardamenti. La nuova Fiera Campionaria, nata il \n12 settembre 1946, per due decenni volano del boom \nindustriale italiano e vetrina nota e prestigiosa del \nMade in Italy, su questa grande area resterà per oltre \n80 anni. \nUna nota curiosa: nel 1951 URSS aderisce, in piena \nguerra fredda, alla Fiera di Milano che, da quel mo-\nmento, sarà per decenni il punto di incontro commer-\nciale tra est e ovest. \noggi City Life, a suo modo, reinterpreta lo spirito del-\nlo scambio e dell’incontro di idee del vivere, dell’a-\nbitare e del lavorare.
