Non sapevo nemmeno \ncome fare a produrle in serie. Così è nata la Catellani & Smith. Quasi per \ncaso. Logan Smith, quello che nei primi anni abbiamo fatto credere fosse \nun architetto londinese, in realtà era il nome del mio cavallo di quegli anni. \nUn modo per non accentrare tutto su di me, per darmi una credibilità, ma \nanche per iniziare un percorso, mai interrotto, segnato da una continua e \nspontanea ironia. Mi piace sdrammatizzare le mie creazioni, infine altro non \nsono che lampade. Poi però dedico a loro un impegno totale, di ricerca, di \nattenzione, di espressione. Pretendo che tutti quelli che lavorano con me \nfacciano altrettanto. E’ una questione di rispetto nei riguardi di chi ha creduto \nin noi, di chi si lascia emozionare dai nostri prodotti. Non sono un designer,  \nnon sono un artista. Non voglio esserlo. Sono uno che fa quello che gli \npiace. Poi piace anche ad altri. Le cose dal 1989 sono cambiate, l’azienda \nè cresciuta, la produzione aumentata, la ricerca ha cavalcato la tecnologia. \nOggi siamo in grado di dare di più. Tutto è cambiato perché nulla \ncambiasse. Le nostre lampade sono costruite ancora con le mani, in spazi \ndi lavoro bellissimi. Sono fatte tutte in Italia, sul Serio... Non c’è frenesia, \nad ogni lampada viene dedicato il tempo che serve per fare una lampada \nfatta bene. Perché “bello” è soggettivo, ma “perfetto” no. Ho cresciuto le \npersone che lavorano con me e loro mi hanno aiutato a crescere. Oggi ci \nstiamo preparando a una nuova fase. Ce fut tout de suite le succès, soudain, inattendu. Je ne savais \nmême pas comment faire pour les produire en série. C’est ainsi qu’est né \nCatellani & Smith. Presque par hasard. Logan Smith, celui que, au cours \ndes premières années, nous avons fait passer pour un architecte londonien, \nétait en fait le nom de mon cheval à cette époque-là. Une manière de ne \npas tout focaliser sur moi, pour me donner une crédibilité mais aussi pour \nouvrir un parcours, jamais interrompu, marqué d’une ironie constante et \nspontanée. J’aime dédramatiser mes créations, …en fin de compte ce n’est \nrien d’autre que des lampes. Mais ensuite, je leur dédie un engagement \ntotal de recherche, d’attention, d’expression. Je demande que tous ceux \nqui travaillent avec moi fassent de même. C’est une question de respect \nà l’égard de qui a cru en nous, de qui est touché par nos produits. Je ne \nsuis pas un designer, je ne suis pas un artiste. Et je ne désire pas l’être. \nJe suis quelqu’un qui fait ce qui lui plaît. Et qui, ensuite, plaît aussi aux \nautres. Depuis 1989 les choses ont bien changé, l’entreprise a grandi, la \nproduction a augmenté, la recherche s’est développée en s’appuyant sur \nla technologie de pointe. Aujourd’hui nous sommes en mesure de faire \nmieux. Tout a changé, pour que rien ne change. Nos lampes sont encore \nconstruites à la main, dans de très beaux espaces de travail. Elles sont \ntoutes faites en Italie, au bord du fleuve Serio… Sans frénésie ; on consacre \nà chaque lampe le temps nécessaire pour pouvoir faire une lampe bien faite. \nCar la « beauté » est subjective mais la « perfection » ne l’est pas. J’ai élevé \nles personnes qui travaillent avec moi, et eux-mêmes m’ont aidé à grandir. \nNous nous préparons maintenant pour une nouvelle phase. Der Erfolg stellte sich sofort ein, ganz plötzlich und \nunerwartet. Ich wusste nicht einmal, wie ich sie in Serie herstellen sollte. Das \nist der Beginn von Catellani & Smith. Quasi aus Zufall. In den ersten Jahren \nhaben wir den Leuten vorgegaukelt, dass es sich bei Logan Smith um einen \nLondoner Architekten handelte, aber in Wirklichkeit war dies der Name \nmeines damaligen Pferdes. Einfach, damit nicht alles auf mich konzentriert \nwar, um mir Glaubwürdigkeit zu verschaffen, aber auch als Beginn eines \nWerdeganges, meines Werdeganges der nie unterbrochen wurde und sich \ndurch eine andauernde und spontane Ironie auszeichnet. Ich spiele die \nBedeutung meiner Kreationen gerne herunter; im Grunde handelt es sich \nnur um Lampen. Aber ihnen gilt mein ganzes Engagement, ihnen widme ich \nmein Forschen, meine Aufmerksamkeit und mein Schaffen. Und ich verlange \nvon allen, die mit mir arbeiten, dass sie das Gleiche tun. Es handelt sich hier \num eine Art Respekt gegenüber all jenen, die an uns geglaubt haben, die \nsich von unseren Produkten begeistern lassen. Ich bin kein Designer, ich bin \nauch kein Künstler und ich will es auch nicht sein. Ich bin jemand, der das \nmacht, was ihm gefällt. Und das gefällt dann auch den anderen. Die Dinge \nhaben sich seit 1989 verändert, der Betrieb ist gewachsen, die Produktion \nnahm zu, die Forschung hat die Technologie miteinbezogen. Heute sind wir \nin der Lage, mehr zu geben. Alles hat sich verändert und doch bleibt vieles \ngleich. Unsere Leuchten werden auch heute noch von Hand hergestellt, an \neinem wunderschönen Arbeitsplatz. Sie werden alle in Italien hergestellt, \nam Fluss Serio... Es gibt keine Hektik, jeder Leuchte wird genau die Zeit \ngewidmet, die man braucht, um eine Leuchte von exzellenter Manufaktur \nherzustellen. Lì \npartecipai ad alcune lezioni di calligrafia ed è stata una scoperta nella \nscoperta. Ancora oggi continuo ad esercitarmi in quell’arte, cercando \ndi trovare in quei gesti lenti e precisi la loro essenza. L’Ensō, il simbolo \ndel cerchio, mi ha affascinato in particolare per ciò che rappresenta, \nl’illuminazione, la completezza, il tutto, il niente. A quel punto cercare di \ndare tridimensionalità a quel gesto è stato per me un passaggio naturale.\nEnzo Catellani\nI had the privilege to spend a period of my life in Japan. During that time, \nI took calligraphy classes, and it was life-changing. I still practice this art, \ntrying to find essence of those slow, precise movements. For example, Ensō, \nthe circle symbol of enlightenment and wholeness, has always fascinated \nme. It encompasses everything and nothing. At that point, adding three-\ndimensionality to that stroke was natural for me.\nJ’ai eu la chance de passer une période de ma vie au Japon, où j’eus \nl’opportunité de participer à des leçons de calligraphie. Ce fut une découverte \ntotale. Aujourd’hui encore, je continue à pratiquer cet art, en essayant de \ntrouver l’essence de ces gestes lents et précis. L’Ensō, le symbole du cercle, \nm’a tout particulièrement fasciné pour ce qu’il représente : l’illumination, la \nplénitude, le tout, le rien. C’est alors qu’il m’a paru tout naturel de chercher \nà donner un aspect tridimensionnel à ce geste.\nIch hatte das Glueck, eine Zeit meines Lebens in Japan zu verbringen. \nDort besuchte ich einige Kalligraphiekurse. Für mich war das wie eine Art \nEntdeckung innerhalb der Entdeckung. Noch heute praktiziere ich diese \nKunst und versuche, ihre Essenz in diesen langsamen und präzisen Gesten \nzu finden. Giovani e non più, purchè illuminati \ne illuminanti. \nCatellani creates the lamps inside his atelier, while Smith paws the ground of his stable. It \nhas been this way since 1989 when Enzo Catellani chose a non-existent partner, naming \nhim after his English thoroughbred. Thirty years later, Catellani felt he would always enjoy \nan encounter with a real Smith. Developing an understanding with a personality so strong \nthat it has characterised the entire production of Catellani & Smith was a difficult feat, \nhowever. Thus, the doors to the mind and the company have opened up to new Smiths. \nPeople that design new products in tune with the founder’s clear vision.
