Seitdem ist jedes \nPolstermöbel, das die Manufaktur \nim rheinhessischen Gensingen \nverlässt, ein von Hand gefertigtes \nUnikat. Die unabdingbare Passion \nund viel Mut sorgten dafür, dass \ndas Familienunternehmen den \nHerausforderungen der Ge-\nschichte langfristig standhielt – \nvon der totalen Zerstörung des \nWerks im 2. Weltkrieg über die \nKrise während der Rezessionsjahre \n1986 bis zur Rettung durch die \nBrüder Norbert und Hartmut Bretz \nim Folgejahr. 2010 stieg Hartmuts \nTochter zunächst als Designerin \nein und seit 2018 teilt sie sich \ndie Geschäftsführung mit ihrem \nOnkel Norbert.\nMit Herz, Sinn und vollem \nKörpereinsatz zum Durchbruch \n„Wir sind ein richtiges Familien-\nunternehmen mit langer Tradi-\ntion“, sagt Carolin. „Die Bewah-\nrung von Werten wie Zusammen halt, \nRespekt und Vertrauen ist uns \nwichtig. Dazu gehören auch der \noffene Diskurs und ein konstrukti-\nver Umgang mit unterschiedlichen \nStandpunkten. Unsere Kolleginnen \nund Kollegen zählen zum erwei-\nterten Familienumfeld. Einige \nbegleiten uns seit Jahrzehnten. \nDas macht uns stolz und zeigt \nuns, dass wir den richtigen \nWeg gehen.“ \nMaria ist so ein Beispiel: Sie \nstartete ihre Bretz-Karriere 1976 \nals Näherin und leitet heute \ndie Abteilung für Näherei und \nZuschnitt. „Ich liebe meinen \nJob“, sagt sie und meint es so. \n„Wir gehen respektvoll und \nvertraut miteinander um. Der \nWeg zum fertigen Produkt ist \nmanchmal gepflastert mit \nschlaflosen Nächten und Neu-\nanfängen, aber auch mit Ideen-\naustausch. Wenn es mal heiß \nhergeht, finden wir zusammen \neinen Weg das scheinbar  \nUnmögliche möglich zu machen. \nJeder gibt hier sein Bestes.\" \nEin Möbelstück wie eine  \nReise wie ein Möbelstück \nDie Umsetzung der Unterneh-\nmenswerte hört nicht bei einer \nB ret z I ntro\nfairen Beschäftigung auf. Aus \nethischen Gründen verzichtet \nBretz komplett auf tierische \nProdukte wie Leder oder Daunen. \nSeit den 90er Jahren gelten \nfarbenfrohe, schillernde Velours-\nStoffe als das Markenzeichen \nschlechthin. Die handverlesenen \nTextilien stammen hauptsächlich \naus Italien, Deutschland und \nBelgien. Was die Kreativität \nbetrifft, lässt Bretz sich nicht \nlimitieren. \nKreativdirektorin Pauline  \nbeschreibt den Stil der Möbel \nmitunter als „maximal, eklektisch, \nphantasievoll“. Since then, \nevery upholstered piece of \nfurniture that leaves our work-\nshop in Gensingen is a hand-\nmade original. It took passion \nand a lot of courage to keep the \nfamily business running over the \nyears. From total destruction in \nWorld War II, to the recession in \n1986, to being saved by the Bretz \nbrothers, Norbert and Hartmut, \nin the following year. In 2010, \nHartmut’s daughter, Carolin, \ninitially joined the company as \na designer, and since 2018 she \nhas shared the management \nwith her uncle Norbert.\nCreating the unexpected with \nour hearts, minds and sense of \ntouch: our recipe for success \n“We are a family business through \nand through with a long tradition” \nsays Carolin. “Maintaining values \nlike solidarity, respect, and trust is \nreally important to us. And we \ncherish open discourse and \ndifferent view points. All of our \ncolleagues are part of our \nextended family. Some have been \nwith us for decades. We are very \nproud of this and it shows us that \nwe are on the right path.” \nTake Maria for example: She \nstarted her career at Bretz in 1976 \nas a seamstress and today she is \nhead of the sewing and cutting \ndepartment. “I love my job,” she \nsays and means it. “We respect \nand trust each other. The road to \nthe finished product is sometimes \npaved with sleepless nights and \nstarting all over again, but also \nwith a rich exchange of ideas. \nWhen the heat is on, together we \nfind a way to make the seemingly \nimpossible possible. Everyone \nhere is totally dedicated and \ngives their very best.” \nEvery piece of furniture tells \na myriad of stories... \nBut our company values do not \nend with looking after our \nemployees fairly; for ethical \nreasons, we at Bretz have \ncompletely abandoned the \nuse of any animal products like \nleather or down. Since the 1990s, \ndazzling velours are our ultimate \ntrademark. These hand picked \nfabrics come mainly from Italy, \nGermany and Belgium. When it \ncomes to creativity, there are no \nlimits at Bretz. \nCreative director Pauline some-\ntimes describes the style of \nfurniture as “limitless, eclectic, \nimaginative”. We experiment with \ndimensions and clichés, stretching \ndesign boundaries in a way that \nis rebellious, but also playfully \nphilosophical. “Bretz definitely \npolarizes,” Pauline says, “but \nthere is one thing that all of our \nfurniture has in common: Each \npiece tells its own story, gives \nwings to the imagination and \ncombines two fundamental and \nseemingly contrary human \ndesires; the desire to see strange \nworlds juxtaposed with our need \nfor comfort, familiarity and \nsecurity. Parfaitement adaptés les uns aux autres, ces \néléments assurent le confort d'assise typique de la \nmarque Bretz, qui incite d'une part à s'y enfoncer sans \nretenue et offre d'autre part de la stabilité. Pour que la \nhousse s'adapte au meuble comme un vêtement fait \nsur mesure, le travail de développement requiert une \nlongue expérience, de la passion et de la précision. \nUn dernier serrage du velours, une dernière caresse \nde la main sont d’autant de petits adieux avant que \nle canapé ne rejoigne son nouveau foyer. \nUn ancrage solide dans l’artisanat de la tapisserie \nd’ameublement, un esprit tourné vers l’avenir  \nJohann Bretz a fondé l’entreprise en 1895. Depuis, \nchaque meuble rembourré qui quitte la manufacture de \nGensingen, dans la Hesse rhénane, est une pièce unique \nconçue à la main. Une passion à toute épreuve et une \nbonne dose de courage ont permis à l’entreprise \nfamiliale de résister à long terme aux défis de l’histoire, \nde la destruction totale de l’usine pendant la Seconde \nGuerre mondiale jusqu’à la crise de 1986 pendant les \nannées de récession, suivie du sauvetage de l’entreprise \npar les frères Norbert et Hartmut Bretz l’année suivante. \nEn 2010, Carolin, la fille de Hartmut a d'abord rejoint \nl'entreprise en tant que designer et depuis 2018,  \nelle partage la direction de l’entreprise avec son  \noncle Norbert. \nMettre tout son coeur, son esprit et son énergie \ndans le progrès  \n« Nous sommes une authentique entreprise familiale \navec une longue tradition », explique Carolin. « Nous \navons à coeur de préserver des valeurs telles que la \ncohésion, le respect et la confiance. Cela implique \négalement une culture du débat ouvert et une \napproche constructive des différents points de vue. \nNos collègues font partie de notre environnement \nfamilial élargi. Certains nous accompagnent depuis \ndes décennies. Nous en sommes fiers et cela nous \nprouve que nous sommes engagés dans la bonne \nvoie. » Maria en est un parfait exemple : elle a com-\nmencé sa carrière chez Bretz en 1976 en tant que \ncouturière et dirige aujourd’hui le service couture et \ndécoupe. « J’adore mon travail », affirme-t-elle avec \nsincérité. « Nous avons une relation emprunte de \nrespect et de confiance. Le parcours jusqu'au produit \nfini est parfois jalonné de nuits blanches et de retours \nà la case départ, mais aussi d'échanges d'idées. \nLorsque les choses se corsent, nous trouvons en-\nsemble un moyen de rendre possible ce qui semble \nimpossible. Chacun donne ici le meilleur de lui-même. »\nDes meubles qui invitent au voyage  \nLa concrétisation des valeurs de l’entreprise ne \ns’arrête pas à un emploi plus équitable. \nPour des raisons éthiques, Bretz a totalement renoncé \naux produits d’origine animale, comme le cuir ou le \nduvet. Depuis les années 1990, les tissus en velours \naux couleurs vives et chatoyantes sont considérés \ncomme sa marque de fabrique par excellence. Les \ntextiles triés sur le volet principalement d’Italie, \nd’Allemagne et de Belgique. En ce qui concerne la \ncréativité, Bretz ne s’impose aucune limite.\nPauline, directrice de la création, décrit parfois le style \ndes meubles comme « maximaliste, éclectique, \nimaginatif ».
