His overall \napproach to architecture led \nhim to become involved with \nall the decorative elements, \nincluding furniture, that \nwere to form part of the \nbuilding. The admiration of \nmany modern designers for \nGaudí furniture has not gone \nunnoticed by BD, which \nwas the first company to \nrescue them from history to \ncreate handcrafted series \nof reproductions using the \nsame materials – varnished \nsolid oak – and the whole \nwealth of details used in the \nmanufacture of the originals.\nBorn in Barcelona in 1941, \nOscar Tusquets presents \nhimself publicly as an \narchitect by training, a \ndesigner by adaptation, a \npainter by vocation and a \nwriter through the desire \nto make friends. In other \nwords, the prototype of \nthe complete artist that the \nspecialisation of the modern \nworld has steadily driven to \nextinction. He graduated \nas an architect in 1965 from \nBarcelona’s Escuela Técnica \nSuperior de Arquitectura and \nwas a member of Studi Per, \ntogether with Pep Bonet, \nCristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet \nand Mireia Riera, with all \nof whom he set out in 1972 \non the adventure of BD, \nwhere he began his work as \na designer of furniture and \nobjects, thanks to which \nhe has won the Spanish \nNational Design Award and \nseen a number of his pieces \nappear in the collections of \nsuch major museums as the \nMoMA in New York and the \nCentre George Pompidou \nin Paris.\nOne of the most charismatic \ndesigners of the new \ncentury, Alfredo Häberli \nwas born in Buenos Aires \nin 1964 and trained as a \ndesigner in Zürich. In 2008 \nhe was honoured with an \nextensive retrospective of \nhis work at the Museum \nfür Gestaltung of Zurich, \nmotivated partly by his not \nleaving Switzerland, the base \nfrom which he has worked \nfor the leading Scandinavian \nand European companies. \nIn 2001, BD launched the \ncollection of bar furniture \nunder the name of Happy \nHour, followed some years \nlater when Los bancos Suizos \nwent into production. The \nSwiss Benches were awarded \nthe ADI FAD Golden Delta \nPrize, the highest recognition \nthat can be awarded to a \nproduct in Spain. \nBorn in Madrid in 1974, Jaime \nHayon can boast one of the \nmost glittering careers to be \nseen in the recent history \nof contemporary design. \nAlthough born and trained \nin Madrid, he was forged as \na designer with Fabrica, the \nbreeding ground of creativity \nrun by Benetton near the \nItalian city of Treviso, where \nhe arrived in 1997, when he \nhad barely turned 24, to work \nunder Oliviero Toscani, who \nwould soon put him in charge \nof the design department. \nIt was at Fabrica that he \nfirst worked with BD on the \nMail Me project. In 2004, \nHayon decided to branch \nout on his own, so he settled \nin Barcelona and began \nworking on a number of \nprojects while also exhibiting \nhis more personal work in \nart galleries. His exhibition \nentitled Mediterranean \nDigital Baroque, at London’s \nDavid Gill Gallery, and the \nbathroom collection that \nhe designed for ArtQuitect \nmarked the start of his \nmeteoric international rise, \nwhich was established with \nthe Showtime collection for \nBD. Hayon currently lives and \nworks in Valencia.\nBorn in Milan in 1931, he \nhas been one of the key \nfigures in design in the \n20th century. From theory \nand practice. Alessandro \nMendini passed at the age \nof 87, leaving a huge void. \nArchitect, industrial designer \nand director of important \nmagazines such as Casabella, \nModo and Domus. Promoter \nof the ˝Radical design˝ \nmovement in the 70s and \nfounder of Studio Alchimia. \nGuilty of the success of \nSwatch watches and the \ngolden age of Alessi. It was \nhe who defined the concept \nof ‘post-industrial neo-\ncrafting’ which is very similar \nto what we have been doing \nat BD since the company was \nborn in 1972, later sponsored \nby masters such as Álvaro \nSiza Vieira, Ettore Sottsass \nand himself. He has always \naccompanied us and we \nhave always followed his \nadvice: not to lose identity, \nbe indifferent to fashion and \nseek beauty.\nKonstantin Grcic (1965) was \ntrained as a cabinet maker \nat The John Makepeace \nSchool for Craftsmen in \nWood before studying \nDesign at the Royal College \nof Art in London. He set up \nhis own office in Munich in \n1991. Today, Konstantin Grcic \nDesign GmbH is based in \nBerlin. The office is active in \nseveral fields ranging from \nindustrial design projects, \nexhibition design and \narchitectural collaborations.\nKonstantin Grcic defines \nfunction in human terms, \ncombining formal strictness \nwith considerable mental \nacuity and humour. Each of \nhis products is characterized \nby his careful research into \nthe history of design and \narchitecture and his passion \nfor technology and materials. \nKnown for pared-down \npieces, Grcic is often called \na minimalist but the designer \nhimself prefers to speak \nof simplicity.\nSalvador Dalí is the most \nversatile and prolific artists \nof the 20th century and \nthe most famous Surrealist. \nThough chiefly remembered \nfor his painterly output, in \nthe course of his long career \nhe successfully turned to \nsculpture, printmaking, \nfashion, advertising, writing, \nfilmmaking and design. \nDalí was renowned for his \nflamboyant personality \nand role of mischievous \nprovocateur as much as for \nhis undeniable technical \nvirtuosity. During the \nnineteen-thirties Dalí filled \nentire notebooks with \nsketches for various furniture \ndesigns which he would have \nliked to see in the cinema, \nused as advertising props \nor have in his own house. \nThese were strange objects, \nhigh in symbolic content and \nwith refined forms, which \nhe would have enjoyed \nhaving around him. In the \n1990s a group of experts, \nled by Oscar Tusquets, \nset themselves the task of \nturning the furniture Dalí had \ndrawn into reality.\nLluís Clotet (Barcelona, \n1941) is a Spanish architect \nand university professor. In \n1964, he founded the Studio \nPER with architects Pep \nBonet and Cristian Cirici, \nMireia Riera and Oscar \nTusquets. With the latter \nhe has collaborated on \nmultiple projects until 1983. \nHe is a founding partner of \nBD Barcelona Design, for \nwhich he regularly designed \nfurniture and objects. \nHighlights of his creations \nare the designs of industrial \nobjects such as Hialina \nshelving (1974), Campana \nDiáfana (1979) and Hypóstila \nshelving (1980), all of them \nawarded with the gold \nDelta prize.\nEttore Sottsass (Insbruck, \nAustria, 1917) was a grandee \nof late 20th century Italian \ndesign. Best known as the \nfounder of the early 1980s \nMemphis collective, he also \ndesigned iconic products for \nOlivetti, as well as beautiful \nglass and ceramics. He’s \none of the most illustrious \ncollaborators with BD. In \nthe 1970s, ten years before \nhe formed the mythical \nMemphis group, Sottsass \nwas a regular visitor to \nBarcelona. He had fallen in \nlove with a beautiful student \nat the Eina School. Fruit of \nthis love affair and his time \nin our country is this vase of \nrose-colored ceramic, which \nhe named Shiva. BD had only \njust been born and so with it \nthis modern fertility symbol. \nThe genius and risqué \ncharacter of the master \nhave been preserved in the \noriginal catalogue of this \niconic piece that is still \nin production.\nStephen Burks (Chicago, \n1969) is both a traveler and a \ndesigner. For over a decade \nhe has dedicated his work to \nbuilding a bridge between \nauthentic craft traditions, \nindustrial manufacturing, \nand contemporary design. \nSince 2005, Burks has \nconsulted with nonprofits \nincluding Aid to Artisans, \nthe Clinton Global Initiative, \nDesign Network Africa, \nArtesanias de Colombia and \nthe Nature Conservancy, \nuniting the artisan, the \ndesigner, and global brands \nin a triangle of immersive \ndevelopment.
