THIRD WORKPLACE
CB
WHEN
ONE
IS TRAVELLING,
THINGS ALWAYS FALL THROUGH
THE CRACKS. HOW YOU MAIN-
TAIN YOUR OVERVIEW?
DS
During preparations for the cam-
paign just last week, we con-
stantly had friendly reminders of
this. In principle I always try to
answer everything right away.
But at times when I’m simply not

places, then it’s hard.
CB
ARE YOU ALWAYS AVAILABLE,
OR DO YOU ALSO SOMETIMES
SWITCH YOUR PHONE OFF?
CB
ARE YOU THE TYPE TO WORK
UNTIL YOU COLLAPSE, OR DO
YOU RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS
OF WHEN IT’S TIME TO TAKE
A BREAK?
DS
Until last year I didn’t really know about this. I just kept on working, no matter how I felt. I never actually
cared, until I realized that I’m not 20 anymore. Then I had to change some things. I had to change my
travel behaviour completely. Last year I took one night trips to America or Asia. I won’t do this anymore.

back and then return a week later. Which can happen because all of the collections are on different
timelines. You simply have to organize, and that’s where I am now. Here in New York we just photo-
graphed three campaigns, we had a show and talked about the next collection for Summer 2014.
CB
WHAT DOES YOUR WORKDAY
LOOK LIKE? WHAT DO YOU DO
FIRST WHEN YOU GET TO THE
HERZOGENAURACH OFFICE?
CB
DO THE DIFFERENT COLLEC-
TIONS OR FOCUS CHANGE AS
A MANAGER?
DS
In principle, both. From NEO to
Originals, from Originals to

nances. It’s not like I’m just sit-
ting there looking at a white
piece of paper and attempting to
create something. My job is re-
markably multi-faceted.
CB
YOU MEAN THAT ALL OF THE
CAMPAIGNS
WERE
PHOTO-
GRAPHED IN NEW YORK, SO
THAT
THE
TEAM
BRINGS
EVERYTHING TO THE STAGE
WITH MORE FOCUS AND EFFI-
CIENCY?
CB
I KNOW THAT YOU LIKE TO
STAY AT THE BOWERY HOTEL
IN NEW YORK. DO YOU HAVE A
FAVOURITE WORKPLACE THERE
AS WELL?
DS
Travelling I’ve always had really good experiences sitting at the Bowery Hotel in the evenings. I feel comfort-

nitely. But I gladly work in Herzogenaurach as well. This might sound like a surprise, but it lies in the comfort
that the majority of my team is there. I can quickly and personally communicate. For my design work I prefer
to work alone at home.
DS

I do is check E-mails that I didn’t
get to the day before. At nine my
appointments start and usually
last until six in the evening. After
that it’s really varied topics.
It’s usually not design directing,

nances. I’m usually busy with
these issues for the whole day.
Then come design meetings and
business update meetings. Be-

collections, I have to be able to
switch
between
things
very
quickly.
DS
In the beginning I was available
almost 24 hours. I never really
turn my phone off, but in the
meantime I’ve found a way to
also
have
breaks,
to
sleep
through and to wait until morn-
ing to check my E-mails.
DS
Exactly.
Because
it’s
simply

who are there anyways for the
show, photograph the campaign
in parallel. Otherwise, we’d just

to London and then back to New
York. This is idiotic. It can be
done differently.
CB
FOR A LONG TIME YOU WERE
INDEPENDENT. DO YOU SEE A
DIFFERENCE TO YOUR CUR-
RENT RESPONSIBILITIES – OR
DOES WORK REMAIN WORK?
THEN, IN THE END, DOES THE
PRODUCT SIMPLY HAVE TO
SELL?
DS

then you make the decisions
about its DNA. When you work
for a brand like adidas, you have
to conform to it. This is logical
and a conscious decision on my
part. It’s interesting to have to
restrict yourself. This is really
the only difference.
