Porta Romana
Il quartiere di Porta Romana è una vasta
area della città che sembra difficile
abbracciare tutta attraverso un unico
sguardo. Si estende dal centro fino quasi
alla zone più esterne e il nome rimanda
alla sua storia antica. Oggi il quartiere si
presenta esteticamente come risultato
di una stratificazione avvenuta nei secoli,
un agglomerato di innesti in cui epoche e
stili si allineano, si fronteggiano in modo
a volte casuale ma naturale dando un
risultato di grande fascino. Le strade, da
quelle piccole fino ai grandi viali, sono il
teatro di una scenografia architettonica
di cui forse solo Milano può dare testimo-
nianza: antichi palazzi nobiliari e fabbriche
dismesse, severi edifici di epoca déco
e architetture dei grandi maestri della
ricostruzione, mura seicentesche e resti di
antiche cascine di quando parte della zona
era un’area rurale, parchi, teatri, musei e
università. Dietro ai portoni un proscenio
di spazi nascosti, vecchie officine, giardini,
case private, circoli culturali, case di moda,
fondazioni e laboratori che ne mostrano
l’aspetto riservato fatto di lavoro e creati-
vità che non si arresta mai.

The Porta Romana district is a vast area of
the city which it seems cannot be taken in
at first glance. It extends from the centre
of the city almost to the outer area, and its
name denotes its ancient history. Today,
this quarter comprises many different
building styles that have evolved over the
centuries, a blend of architectural creations
in which epochs and styles come together,
sometimes in an unplanned manner, culmi-
nating today in a fascinating architectural
tapestry. The roads, from the narrowest
streets to the widest boulevards, create an
extraordinary architectural setting which
is perhaps unique to Milan: ancient noble-
men’s palaces next to abandoned factories,
stern-looking buildings from the deco era
alongside magnificent architecture by the
masters of the reconstruction of the city,
seventeenth-century walls and the remains
of old farms dating from the era when the
area was a rural backwater, parks, theatres,
museums and universities. And, behind the
imposing doors, so many hidden spaces
– old workshops, gardens, private homes,
cultural groups, fashion houses and foun-
dations, all with the more reserved look of
places of work and creativity that never
cease.
