Wood is a living matter that follows nature’s rhythms. The
best time to cut a tree is between October and January, during the
plant’s dormancy. During these months sugar turns into starch,
becoming less appealing to those parasites, insects or fungi,
that often cause permanent damage to the structure and colour
of the wood. The wood quantity and quality are checked
immediately upon arrival. Dehydrated wood is further checked
for its humidity level.
The dried planks are stored in the warehouse, while the
other ones are left in the open, exposed to air, rain and sun for
up to 6 months. In this period of time they find their own natural
balance and they become ready to be processed. After the drying
phase, wood can be used for production. Choosing the right piece
for that specific product also requires great skills.
Il legno è materia viva e segue i tempi della natura. Il
periodo ottimale per il taglio dell’albero va da ottobre a gennaio,
durante il riposo vegetativo della pianta. In questi mesi gli
zuccheri si trasformano in amidi diventando meno appetibili a
quei parassiti, siano essi insetti o funghi, che provocano spesso
danni permanenti sia alla struttura che alla colorazione del legno.
Quantità e qualità del legno vengono controllati sin dal suo arrivo;
il legno già essiccato viene sottoposto ad un’ulteriore verifica
dell’umidità.
Le tavole essiccate sono stipate nei magazzini mentre
quelle non ancora essiccate sono tenute all’aperto, esposte
all’azione dell’aria, della pioggia e del sole anche per sei mesi;
in questo modo si temprano, trovano il loro equilibrio naturale
e diventano adatte alla lavorazione. Dopo l’essiccazione, il legno
è pronto per essere trasformato. Anche in questo caso scegliere
i pezzi più adatti al tipo di realizzazione da eseguire è un’arte
da maestro.
