companies complete with business consultancy services. “The interplay of technology,
urban development, culture, social change and politics,” say Friebe and Lobo, “will
enable and produce forms of living and working that still seem utopian to us today.”
In the late 1980s the American sociologist Ray Oldenburg developed the concept of
the “third place”, with the first place being home and the second place work. The third
place, in contrast, is neutral for Oldenburg, with low hurdles for accessibility. Third
places, according to Oldenburg, have a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, with
a focus on conversation and a relaxed, friendly vibe. Oldenburg made particular
reference to coffee houses in his theory. Regarding digitalisation and the pandemic,
other authors have meanwhile identified fourth and even fifth places that include
semi-publicly accessible, virtual spaces.
Can Bergmann’s theories and Oldenburg’s observations be further developed into
a new understanding of the office? What role could the café scenario play in that
understanding? Sociality, togetherness and community have a lot to do with furniture
and the agility that it provides. Especially with furniture from Thonet. Furniture is
everywhere, explains Philipp Thonet, “where people meet, where they share ideas,
take a short break or get some work done on the go.” Thonet is owned by the fifth
generation of the entrepreneurial Thonet family.
When we talk about the office or the coffee house, there are conventions, agreements,
spatial settings and layouts that carry with them their own cultural history. One of these
agreements has been a clear demarcation between living and working areas. The café
as a third place, neither as private as the home nor as regimented as the workplace, is
being transformed into a play space within the office environment.
