200 Jahre Thonet, 200 Jahre Ikonen des
Designs: Das weltberühmte Unternehmen

Entstanden stets am Puls ihrer jeweiligen
Zeit sind Thonet-Möbel wertbeständige,
kulturträchtige Begleiter für Menschen auf
der ganzen Welt. Die Geschichte des
Unternehmens aus Frankenberg ist reich
an Meilensteinen und bahnbrechenden
Innovationen in Material, Form und Pro-
duktionstechnik. Im 19. Jahrhundert gelang
es Michael Thonet erstmals Massivholz
zu biegen: Der legendäre Wiener Kaffee-
hausstuhl markierte damals den Übergang
vom Handwerk zur Serienfertigung –
Thonet schrieb Industriegeschichte. Im
20. Jahr hundert experimentierten die
Bauhaus-Lehrer Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam
und Ludwig Mies van der Rohe mit kalt
gebogenem Stahlrohr, erfanden den Frei-
schwinger und hatten mit Thonet einen
Produzent mit viel Pioniergeist an ihrer Seite.
Bis in die Gegenwart entwerfen immer
wieder namhafte Designer und Architekten

Michael Thonet first succeeded in bending
solid wood in the 19th century: The
legendary Vienna Coffee House Chair
marked the transition from manual
craftsmanship to serial production – and
Thonet wrote industrial history with it.
In the 20th century, the Bauhaus teachers
Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam and Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe experimented with
cold-bent tubular steel, invented the cantile-
ver chair, and always had Thonet, a pro-
ducer with plenty of pioneering spirit, by
their side. To this day, renowned designers
and architects design-furniture for Thonet
that have the potential to become distinctive
classics. The company’s past heritage also
represents a promising future for Thonet:
