Designer Spotlight
NICOLE FULLER
My fondest Rug Company
memory was travelling to
London to work on the designs
for my Farrah Ruby rug and
getting to collaborate with the
incredible Rug Company team.
I did a number of freehand
sketches first, inspired by
legendary fashion designer
Stephen Sprouse, and the
studio enhanced the art to
create a rug, which remains
one of my favourite pieces I’ve
ever put my name on.
I’d definitely be the
Hummingbird by Alexander
McQueen. The little bird is a
symbol of lightness and joy,
and those who have them as
a totem are thought to be
playful, adaptable, and able to
combat negativity. They’re so
bright and colourful too - it fits
me perfectly.
TIM GOSLING
I have many fond memories
of working with The Rug
Company, but a standout
moment was when I was
literally rolled up in the Deco
Spiral rug by the team in the
showroom in Boston.
If I were a rug, I’d be Echo Gold.
It has the feel of Venetian
gold - fluid and soft. I love the
movement, texture and colour,
it’s utterly divine.
KELLY BEHUN
Some of the best moments
have to be working with the
Rug Company team. It can be
nerve wracking going from a
small 2D sketch to an entire
room size rug, and it makes me
think of those crazy exercises
that happen at corporate
retreats where you are
expected to fall
backwards and trust that
someone will catch you. I feel
like The Rug Company is
always there to catch us, and
they somehow always exceed
our expectations.
If I were a rug it would be
Mary Katrantzou’s Sunray Pink.
It feels like it was designed
with love, it looks like it was
designed by a strong woman,
and it feels maternal and life
affirming. It so beautifully
evokes the sun expanding in all
directions, warming the earth
and all its lucky inhabitants.
HELEN AMY MURRAY
An enduring memory is
winning the Homes & Gardens
Award for my Peony rug at the
V&A Museum in 2009 when I
was heavily pregnant and had
to be helped onto the stage to
receive the award!
I would be a bespoke version
of the Peony rug, in a chalky
off-white silk, large enough
to almost fill a light and airy
space. Not that I personally
want to be trampled on,
but the mass of flowers and
combination of silk with
soft sculpture would look
wonderful and feel delightful
under (bare) foot!
