ideas and crazy designs, but the Lama looked
at our business card and said work with them -
these people will change your life.
What have been some of your most
unforgettable moments with The Rug Company?
Suzanne: For me, it was when the studio phone
rang and it was David Cameron’s assistant at 10
Downing Street. They wanted us to make
a present for Barack and Michelle Obama for
their state visit. We only had three weeks, so we
couldn’t commission anything and had to make
do with what we already had, so we repurposed
an existing piece. There was a Union Jack design
that we created with Lucinda Chambers, that
had a heart with a dagger through it in the
middle, but number 10 said we can’t possibly
have the heart and dagger. Our Head of Sales
Sam’s mother is a fantastic textile restorer, so
she helped us unpick bits and re-sew them,
and we replaced them with an American eagle.
The time pressure added to the madness, but it
really was fabulous.
