The term “biophilia” literally means “love of life and living systems”.
It was first used by Erich Fromm (c. 1965) to describe a psychological
orientation of attraction from all that is alive and vital.
The biophilia hypothesis suggests that there is an instinctive link between
humans and other living organisms.
Edward O. Wilson introduced and popularized the hypothesis in his book
entitled Biophilia (1984): “the connections that human beings subconsciously
seek with the rest of living beings”.
Unlike phobias, which are aversions and fears that people have towards
things in the natural world, philie are the positive attractions and feelings
that people have towards certain habits, activities and objects in their
natural environment.
