3. Photocatalysis
Relevant for outdoors; also relevant for indoors when the mosaic laid indoors is
sufficiently exposed to sunlight.
Some glass mosaic collections contain titanium dioxide in the anatase form,
recognizable by the presence of iridescence. This makes the mosaic:
• self-cleaning / anti-pollutant (sunlight reacts by transforming air pollutants
into soluble salts and water, acting as a solvent, eliminates them by facilitating
surface cleaning)
• antibacterial (the oxidizing power of the radicals produced in the
photocatalytic reaction inhibits the proliferation of bacteria and mold)
