My latest collaboration with
Rubelli attempts to offer a
new approach to
decorating walls.
The portraits of characters
I have created can be
combined with columns,
curtains, borders and
panelling to create fully
realised murals, inspired
by wall paintings I have
produced for private homes
and exhibitions over the
years, along with murals
from historic buildings
that I love.
I looked to Pompeii
for inspiration, but
also Bloomsbury and
Renaissance Frescoes.
Because the wallcoverings
are printed to order, they
can be customised to fit any
chosen space.
The characters take
their cues from some of
my favourite sources of
inspiration – classical
Greece, the theatre and the
circus. I wanted to create a
parade of gods, goddesses,
performers and artists,
dreaming, playing music,
dancing and posing.
There is a kind of intended
softness about my characters,
no doubt due to my decision
to paint each image
in watercolour.
When putting the collection
together, we experimented
with colours digitally;
each element can be printed
completely in grisaille, or,
looking to faded old palaces
for inspiration, muted colour.
I hope that people will
enjoy having fun with this
collection, picking and
choosing the characters and
architectural motifs that
speak to them.
