instead has developed the potential
of multifunctional and multisensorial
lamps, i.e. objects linked to the service
of the self and of the new lighting
needs, such as MultiPot, that is a lamp,
a power multi-socket and a dresser
valet at the same time.
LIGHT AND FREEDOM.
To address the theme Light and
Freedom, Rotaliana has developed
the portable lamps called Dina+ and
Chiardiluna, that are designed to
perform specific purposes and are
suitable for both the indoors and the
outdoors.
LIGHT AND WELLBEING.
Exploring the theme Light and
Wellbeing, new concepts for light
fixtures have been developed through
the Effective Light research. Stemming
from the partnership of Rotaliana with
Neocogita in Rovereto, this research
has investigated the aspects of light
that are responsible for our emotional,
intellectual and physical well-being. It
actually seems there’s a link between
the way our body and mind work
and the type of light to which we
are exposed. The ‘circadian rhythm’,
mainly regulated by natural light and
synchronised by the so-called ‘third
eye’, sets our body’s pace and regulates
the alternation of its physiological
functions (sleep/wake, nutrition/
digestion). It is therefore possible to
obtain a kind of light capable of having
a positive effect on mood and on
cognitive faculties, thus favouring visual
comfort in diverse environmental and
by Rotaliana. In the last few years,
homes have increasingly favoured the
use of so-called ‘architectural’ light
fixtures, namely those that require
pre-setting during the construction
stage, while the spreading use of LED
lighting has swept away the technical
and performance differences between
‘decorative’ and ‘architectural’ lamps.
Even at home, we are increasingly
seeking the option of being able
to change, customise and manage
interior lighting. Therefore, the
definitions ‘decorative’ and ‘technical’
no longer unambiguously indicate
a given application setting (home,
office, hotel, restaurant, shop, etc.).
On this borderline between technical
and decorative there are: the sound-
absorbing lamp called Eden that can
be used in the home, too, thanks to its
domestic shape and because it does
not require wall or ceiling installation;
Dresscode, that brings together
performance and soft aesthetics as
its shape evokes a pleated fabric
lampshade; the linear light lamp
named Squiggle, that becomes a
Fontana-style spatial decoration;
individual conditions and offering the
light colour temperature most suited
for each kind of activity while setting an
alternation between light and darkness.
As a result of the Effective Light
research, the experimental lamp called
Smart+ was designed. This lamp
can optimize the user’s performance
while executing various daily tasks by
emitting a dynamic and customized
form of light that is aware of the
temporal and spatial contexts and
of the user’s personal physical
(physiological and behavioural) data.
The developments in sensorial
engineering and the availability of body
monitoring systems have been used to
program the light cycles applied during
office and domestic working activities
that call for concentration and attention
over time in order to ensure the most
efficient use of the user’s mental capital
and work time.
The multifaceted nature of Rotaliana
lamps is in continuous evolution,
such as animals and plants in the
phylogenetic tree featured in the
Naturalis Historia installation at
Euroluce 2019. Light, mysterious,
and rational, scenographic and
functional, it is enclosed within micro-
architectures such as the dome of
Febo; it is hidden inside shapes
inspired by nature such as metallic
fruits Pomi; it is as dynamic as natural
light in the String DTW.
BORDER LIGHT.
Border light is the path taken with
the most recent products designed
Venere, a traditionally shaped but
highly performing wall lamp that
allows to direct the light as if it were a
spotlight; Souvlaki, the electrified track
system suited for domestic as well as
public spaces, extremely flexible and
simple and easy to configure, install
and use.
