Narita Airport
Airports are often impersonal places,
with little relationship to the history or
characteristics of their geographic location.
Likewise, the common areas tend to be
anonymous and not especially comforta-
ble. The needs of the people waiting and
the functions required to host them are not
effectively addressed at the design level.
Poltrona Frau Custom Interiors developed,
in collaboration with Cassina Ixc. Ltd, a
significant set of furnishings for the
common spaces of the Narita International
Airport near Tokyo. Adaptations of two
bestsellers in the catalogue, the Aetos seats
and the Fly_Air chaise lounges, respectively
designed by the Austrian studio EOOS and
the Italian studio Progetto CMR, are func-
tional for the contemporary needs and
expectations of travel and waiting areas.
Distributed throughout the airport, the
8,691 seats and the 300 Fly_Air chaise
lounges reflect the typical shades of the
Japanese seasons in 24 different colours of
Pelle Frau® leather; a careful study of the
local flora and the colours of the different
seasons makes the environment welcoming
and distinctive.
Aetos is made up of three-seater
modules positioned on aluminium struc-
tures. Tables and armrests are individually
mounted on the frame to offer the greatest
possible flexibility of arrangement, while
USB sockets are also positioned on the
frame, allowing travellers to charge their
devices without the need for adapters. The
chaise lounges, specifically developed for
airport waiting areas, have a light and slender
seat shell that rests on a sturdy steel bar. The
seat, tables and armrests attach directly to
the structure, with easy assembly and a
variety of configurations. A headrest and
footrest can be integrated to maximise
comfort and relaxation. Because the seren-
ity of travel starts at the airport itself.
