In 2021, the Academy Museum of
Motion Pictures opened in Los Angeles, the
new, world reference point for the Film Arts.
The museum extends over 90,000 square
feet, and includes permanent and temporary
exhibition spaces, two cinemas and thea-
tres, and dynamic spaces for public events.
The design is by the Renzo Piano Build-
ing Workshop (RPBW), which restored and
expanded the former May Company ware-
house from the late 1930s. The building is
flanked by a large sphere with a transparent
top, created to recall the airships that once
landed in the area, which was formerly an
airfield. The majestic sphere is home to the
thousand-seat David Geffen Theatre and
the Dolby Family Terrace, which overlooks
Hollywood.
After more than two years of develop-
ment, the Poltrona Frau Custom Interiors
business unit built the seats for the David
Geffen Theatre based on a design by RPBW.
Armchairs in red velvet, like the finishes of
the room, with a clean and compact design
that conceals the complexity of the analysis
of ergonomics and acoustic efficiency
behind a pleasant feeling of comfort and
embrace. It is a unique product, tailored to
the specific needs of the project. It also
confirms the happy collaboration between
the Poltrona Frau Custom Interiors business
unit and RPBW, which began with the crea-
tion of RP01, the armchair designed for the
Parco della Musica auditorium in Rome in
2002. The seat for the David Geffen Theatre
takes several of those solutions further,
such as the moulded wood seat shell, the
custom-developed anti-noise joints, and
the
scratch-proof
and
shock-resistant
materials. Collaboration with RPBW sub-
sequently continued with the development
of the armchairs for the auditorium of the
Stavros
Niarchos
Foundation
Cultural
Centre (2017).
