Design and construction aimed at facili-
tating acoustic and visual perception are the
fundamental principles behind the archi-
tecture of the Grand Hall at the Elbphilarmo-
nie in Hamburg. This unique concert hall,
inaugurated in 2017, is characterised by
monumental and organic architecture which
is the result of over ten years of research and
development by the Swiss studio Herzog &
de Meuron. The shape of the Grand Hall
does not adapt to the external building but
rather vice versa; it is the levels and tiers of
the auditorium that generate the spatial
unity. The orchestra is positioned in the
centre, and the entire space is organised
around this fulcrum, with the audience
seating and balconies arranged on parallel
and concentric lines at a maximum distance
of 30 meters from the orchestra, allowing for
optimal enjoyment of the concert from any-
where in the hall.
The Herzog & de Meuron studio devel-
oped the seat design with Poltrona Frau
Custom Interiors. The two companies previ-
ously collaborated on the BCN armchair for
the Barcelona Forum in 2004, and some
details from that design are recalled in the
new seat. The materials used in the design
are
steam-curved
and
pressed
beech
plywood, padding in non-deforming poly-
urethane foam with variable density, metal
details, and custom-made fabric. Nothing is
merely decorative. Everything is functional
to the acoustic performance of the room,
like the fabric, a grey weave with a moiré
effect and high sound-absorbing properties.
The design of the seat structure is inspired
by automotive-type seats with dynamic
lines and adjustable centre distances and
backrest inclinations. The shell shape,
unusual for auditoriums, is also the result of
the careful study of acoustic performance,
to which the black lacquer on the back of
the backrest also contributes. Despite the
complexity of the construction, the design is
clean and hides from view all the details of
the fastenings between the elements.
This armchair, thanks to its unique
image, comfort and acoustic responsive-
ness has become part of the Poltrona Frau
catalogue of auditorium and theatre seats,
with the name Ham.
