The couturier’s approach blends with
production tailoring. The Capsule Collec-
tion created by New York fashion designer
Alexander Wang consists of two bean bag
armchairs and a bar cabinet with shelves.
The shapes convey an intriguing juxtaposi-
tion between informal comfort and refi ned
elegance, refl ecting the Taiwanese stylist’s
ability to combine streetwear and luxury,
fi nding new points of reference from biker
jackets to traditional luggage to travel trunks.
The armchairs were inspired by the concept
of informal relaxation: “the idea of relaxing in
the basement, sitting on cushions”, explains
the designer. However, he wanted to recon-
textualise this idea in a youthful but luxurious
and ambitious world.
The Capsule Collection had a gestation
of nearly two years. The lounge chairs crea-
tively reinterpret the soft-shaped bean bag
armchairs, structured here in a monolithic
frame thanks to the geometric bronze-
plated steel base. The sumptuous upholstery
in black Pelle Frau® Soul leather gives it a
velvety texture and an extraordinary full-
ness of colour. The portable bar cabinet is in
matte black Zigrino leather, with polished
steel edges. The interior is upholstered in
black suede leather and features shelves
to hold glasses, bottles and cocktail acces-
sories of diff erent sizes. The collection
expresses Wang’s irreverent “streetwise”
attitude with eccentricities such as the
nine asymmetrical sides of the armchairs’
support base, or the wheels on the “trunk
bar” that transform it into a sort of trolley.

Frau and Alexander Wang has not only
demonstrated a shared passion for design
experimentation and for refi ned details
and materials - it has also shown Poltrona
Frau’s willingness to take a fresh look at
its heritage under diff erent lenses and to
experiment with expressive languages to
which it is unaccustomed.
